Hi, using crontab -e i have created the crontab file and gave the specified time and commands. Then when i start crond its says cant' lock pid.... Other wise can anyone tell me how to put shell script in crontab. Thanks Shishu

Write a shell script in a secure location. For example, assume that your script is /usr/local/bin/myscript.sh 2. Make sure that its owner and group is root and root respectively. chown root.root /usr/local/bin/myscript.sh This step is not essential, but useful to keep the script tamper proof provided next step is also followed. 3. Make sure that it is executable. chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/myscript.sh 4. Run "crontab -e" as the user who is intended to execute the script. In the editor window, enter data in the following format (for further details read crontab manual by running "man 5 crontab") minute hour day_of_month month day_of_week /usr/local/bin/myscript.sh For testing purpose, set up execution time a few minutes from current time. Usually cron daemon is started during system startup. You don't have to start it explicitly. Run "ps -ax | grep cron | grep -v grep" to check whether cron is running already. 5. Check the mail of the user as whom the script was getting executed. The mail will contain the output, if any, generated from the script. Usually these mails are stored in /var/mail directory. Special care should be taken to write scripts running as root. The ownership and permission of all the scripts or other executables are of extreme importance to avoid unintended security holes in your setup. The security aspects of shell script or any other executable can't be discussed in a short mail like this. Refer some good books on secure programming or search on the Net. Raghu

Because of this, I thought that it will be better if I can put kernel direclty into installation CD/DVD by following way: 1. Making an ISO of installation DVD. 2. Mount that ISO on one directory. by using "mount -o loop..." 3. Replace the kernel image which will be in for of RPM. 4. I think then I may need to change some xml files or something like that. 5. And reburn that ISO on DVD. But here I dont know how to replace that kernel and which files need to change so that while installing Yast or in Fedora Anaconda will use new kernel RPM. Can this help you? http://www.mondorescue.org/ You can take a snapshot of your newly installed and customized system on a DVD. Then restore it on other systems. Make sure that system parameters like hostname, IP etc. are changed before bringing those systems on network. Raghu

Slow USB Transfers

I am using Gentoo Linux with 2.6.21-suspend2-r7 kernel. I don't know if I have missed out on some part in kernel compilation, but all USB Transfers seem to be pretty slow. I get an average speed of around 2MBPs and after a while the transfer stalls completely. Not to mention the USB version is 2.0 and the Flash Drives are working very well on Windows. I don't know if this is an issue with Linux in general. Regards, Amit.

linux proxy server query

HI I have to install in my office a Linux proxy server for a new lease line connection. The requirement is that through the proxy server i should have control over bandwidth management for vairous groups and individuals and i should be be able to restrict access to certain website for users and groups. Squid is best used here , but we need a requirement for a GUI. I am planning to install e-box . ebox-platform.com/ - do let me know whats your take on this. MTNL Triband Query

Hello, Im using MTNL's Triband service for accessing the Internet at home . I have never requested a static ip address from MTNL, however whenever im connected to the Internet, I see that my ip address is constant , something like 192.168.1.x , where x is the same all the time.I am new to networking and stuff so please excuse me if my questions sound a bit noobish :) Ok,so i have the following two questions : 1) Is this ip address of mine a static ip address ?. If not , then why does it stay the same all the time ? 2) If I want to host my website on my computer which anyone on the internet can access, how do i go about it ? . I have some basic idea of port forwarding and read some of the tutes on www.portforward.com, which were really informative, but im still not sure how i can host a website on my computer which anyone can access. Hi, I have 40 servers to install OpenSuse10.2. All have same hardware configuration. I have installed OpenSuse on one of the server and I have customized the kernel as per my requirement. Now if I install OpenSuse as it is on other servers I have to customize kernel on all servers after installation. Can I put my customized kernel into Installation CD/DVD itself ? So that when I will install that New OpenSuse, by default it will install customized kernel. Hello All, A windows user was using radmin to monitor and view other desktops in his LAN. However after its time period expired, it turns out that it costs more that 60K for a 50 user license. So I looked for a libre equivalent and found this below that works in Windows and Linux. It is distributed under the GNU GPL license. http://www.tightvnc.com/intro.html http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html On reading its docs, I found it to be almost similar to radmin in installation and use, but with better security. I installed it in windows and its working fine. From one station, the user can monitor other desktops and have discussions with other users without having to be physically present at their terminal. unable to get a nslookup on windows client

HI I am trying to test my DNS ( bind- dlz ) server ( 192.168.03.244) from a remote windows client ( 192.168.0.209 ) . I have a domain called sample.com . The hostname of my r DNS server is testserver.com . When i do a nslookup on the server for sample.com it returns me the following : [root@bind ~]# nslookup sample.com Server: 127.0.0.1 Address: 127.0.0.1#53 Name: sample.com Address: 192.168.0.244 when i do a nslookup for 192.168.0.244 i get the following on my DNS server [root@bind ~]# nslookup 192.168.0.244 Server: 127.0.0.1 Address: 127.0.0.1#53 244.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa name = ns1.testserver.com. but wheni try to do a nslookup for 192.168.0.244 on my windows client i get the following i can how ever ping to 192.168.0.244 C:\Documents and Settings\Admin>nslookup ns1.testserver.com *** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.244: No response from server *** Default servers are not available Server: UnKnown Address: 192.168.0.244 *** UnKnown can't find ns1.testserver.com: No response from server On my DNS server using the command "elinks" i can view the webpage for sample.com hosted on another remote machine. InfraRed Support for Etch.

Hello All, I am trying to get Nokia phones connected to my Debian Etch in order to download clicked photos. I use a usb IR adapter and it gets detected and uses /dev/ttyUSB0 as its device. "pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0" Packages irda-utils, kdelirc, lirc etxc have been installed manually. However, from google searches, it appears that I need siefs file system support installed first in order to mount the IR device to a mount point. Does anyone know where its available? On the Debian site, its not listed. Google throws up pages in Russian. Could existing IR mobile users give some clues on how they got their mobiles visible in Linux?
