Test Mail Email Problem.

Hello All, Sorry for this test mail. I have been facing a wall when sending mails to this list. In the past few days all my mails to the list have bounced. The technical reason is a qmail error "CNAME lookup failed temporarily. (#4.4.3)". This remained even after changing from Yahoo UK to India. Problems Regarding Installing scratchbox

Hi all, I have downloaded scractchbox-core/libs/toolchain . According installation instructions I extracted those tarballs into /. So all extracted files comes in /scratchbox. (RB) GUI is just an extension of a script. The script you mentioned can be run by simply clicking a gui shortcut to it. It is all about environment. If you have to work in a terminal only environment, naturally command line and scripts is the way. If you are in a gui environment, and if the gui is created well, it would do the same functions as script.What is important is to understand the concept of the job in hand, not expertise in a particular interface. For example in the ADSL and wireless routers there is a tiny linux system running and it can be configured using scripts. However if that was the only way, how many service engineers would be able to use the command line interface? Instead, there is a gui firmware interface which only the service personnel would understand and they correctly enter the values according to the customer's environment and the gui internally creates relevant scripts and runs them. That is technology. You can't fight it simply because it makes things easy for others. There are people who are at ease with a screen full of text but there are others who feel intimidated by it and require some graphical interface to interact. Software Freedom day event was a grand success

It is the time to look at our history. SMC is reactivated from a dead state, as a result of personal discussions with praveen, hiran & vimaljoseph in the sidelines of GPLv3 Conference in bangalore. The new team is setup at last year SFD celebrations in Thrissur. Suresh, Baiju(the founder of SMC), Hussain KH (rachana), Anwar, Students in GEC etc also joined in the team at that time. Now we have more than 30 developers+localizers. Open Office Solution Required

Hello All, An OO user in Windows is facing some problems with Spreadsheet. He uses the .xls format. Problem 1: His file consists of many rows and columns. Cells in each row are related to each other. Now in Excel he can sort columns individually and during each sorting, entire rows get sorted. So after every sort, the cells in each row are the same. It is the entire row that gets sorted. In OO he can sort columns but it sorts cells in that column only and this breaks the row and ultimately the table cells get cross connected. Problem 2: In Excel, he can secure a file but allow partial changes like changing the cell background colour. This is needed as his job status indicator is colour coded as the job progresses. His employees can only change colours as they progress with the job. In OO he can secure a file but it is like ON/OFF. Once secure, no partial changes are allowed. They say "Rony, after you took over, our problems have practically disappeared and we learnt a lot from your technical description of various processes that we did blindly before". I am not exaggerating, these are real comments. so people do face daily problems and my experience matches with JTD and many others. (RB) Many problems are related to third party software. Windows is only a platform. I will even add that all those professional clients of mine who r now switched to gnu/linux, they all bless me for putting them out of all daily rubbish of windows. (RB) That's great. GLUG admins please do something about my email delivery problem. Could you check your logs to see if Yahoo is giving any errors when list mails are delivered to it? Firefox users never watches movies!

It's a proven fact! In a recent research done by Indian Multiplex theaters. So they have decided to make their websites compatible only for Internet Explorer (Yeeks!). Why waste time for people who doesn't watch movies. The two best Cinemas in Hyderabad are PVR Cinemas and Prasadz Multiplex. Seems that both have worked hard to make their online ticket booking websites non-compatible with Fx. (The site only works with IE. It doesn't work with Opera, Firefox in both GNU and Windows and Epiphany and Konqueror in GNU). OK, Now that both of the sites are not working, Let me Google for other options. Found that there's a Website BookMyShow, who can do the trick. Well... Bingo! It doesn't work with Fx either. So, it's a proven fact. Firefox users doesn't watch movies. They are simply open source nerds who spends time with terminals. BusinessWorld magazine has an article on the recent standards battle at the Bureau of Indian Standards over Microsoft OOXML proposal. As you know, the OOXML proposal was rejected unanimously by the LITD15 committee formed by BIS to review OOXML. The ODF Alliance which includes FSF, Red Hat, IBM and Sun worked hard to ensure that OOXML was not approved. The reasons for this can be read at www.noooxml.org BusinessWorld is now running a vote on its web site asking readers: "Which documentation standard do you want to vote for?" Hello All, I have not received any mails lately but I can see them on the glug site. This is in response to Kenneth Gonsalves's mail quoted below. "I am not laughing. What exactly is a bug? When, for example, in kword I save a file in OOo format and OOo is unable to open it, is that a bug? Or is it a failure of software - just bad software? As far as I know, the approach to writing software is to first write a use case, or all possible use cases that you can think of. Then write the software. Then write tests to cover all the above use cases, and release the software when it passes the tests. There will be unusual use cases and edge cases which are not anticipated and for which tests havent been written. Failure in these cases are bugs. But no failure in the main use-case. In the case of saving in OOo format and OOo not opening it, this is not a bug. Because it is the main usecase of the particular feature. A simple test - open an OOo file, save it in OOo format and open it in OOo would have detected this, and the feature should not have been released. Yes, bugs will be there - but when a main/common use case fails - I dont think it can be called a bug and it is no laughing matter either. I havent gone into kword code to find if there are test suites, I hope there are ..." Kenneth has echoed my thoughts exactly and put it nicely in words. Having bugs in a software is possible but after more than 5 years if a software behaves as if it was a beta and released just yesterday for the first time, then this is a flaw in the software not some mistake or attitude problem of the installing person. There is nothing hilarious about a person complaining about such grave issues in the software. The cell colour problem I had highlighted was not even connected to any proprietary file formats. It happens in Open formats. M$ softwares may have more bugs, be less stable than nix based ones but when they are in the stable working mode, at least they do the job they are intended to do. And if FOSS fans feel it is below dignity to compare libre software with M$ ones, then why is it that whenever a problem is pointed out in the libre software, they start counting the bugs in M$ ones. Why can't they except that the particular software has serious flaws that need to be corrected. Free software is no longer the free blood donation camp. Today major libre software and distro development is taking place through huge sponsorship and donations and by corporate participation. The programmers are compensated for their efforts, so while the institution is giving away the software for free, the developer is not doing any charity. Then why not expect quality work instead of a 'Fix it yourself' community kit. This is in response to Krish's reply to JTD's mail and I quote... "actually the entire problem is that people don't realise the values of running a script. and by the way running a script is "nothing to do " with programming. I think clicking on next next finish etc is not a real good way of software setup." Simplifying a procedure means that one can do more work instead of wasting time running scripts. How would we feel if we got a mobile phone where instead of pressing buttons, we had to create and run scripts every time we wanted to dial a number or access the phone directory or any other function. The same process is happening in the background but the programmers have provided a beautiful interface to simply press a button. If scripting is so important, why don't we start doing all our home and office work in assembly language or machine code? This will give us better control of the hardware. It is up to the programmer to make software intuitive and easy to handle. It has no relation with scripting skills of the vendor or user. Let each one do his job properly. -- Regards, Rony. iptables setting problem

[Semi-commercial][Discussion] What should Microsoft do?

Hi, I would like to seek your views on something... Microsoft is criticised much by the FOSS community -- one or the other aspect of it. Their software, their ways of doing business, their attitude, whatever. My belief is that whenever somebody criticises they will also have a potential solution in mind -- and I felt, why is it that the solution aspect is barely discussed wrt the Microsoft issue :-) So, I am throwing this question open to you... "Is there some aspect of Microsoft that you do not like? If so, what? And more importantly, how do you think they can correct this flaw of theirs (if you think they can)?" I would really appreciate it if you could share your views on this. Look forward to your response. ----------------------------------------- And before I end this email, some clarifications... (a) I was actually discussing this subject off-list with some FOSS veterans and users, when a friend suggest that I "get out of the acquarium" and throw the question open to the LUG mailing lists. Sensible! So, some of you might have already received my query on this off-list. Apologies for the repetition. (b) This post is not commercial because I am raising this discussion in an individual capacity.
