Virtual Distributed Ethernet

Hi All, Came across this cool piece of software - Virtual Distributed Ethernet -http://vde.sourceforge.net/ It basically allows you to simulate a network on a single computer and it allows you to connect these distributed ethernets to each other. It is extremely useful if you have multiple images running under qemu and wish to connect them , simulating physical hosts. sadly it is not packaged into deb. regards, C

HP Officejet 4255 printing blank pages in Ubuntu 7.04

We have a HP officejet 4255 all-in-one printer-fax-scanner-copier machine which i need t configure with ubuntu. While my laptop dualboot ubuntu 7.04 does recognise the printer and assign hp 4200 series drivers, it keeps printing only blanks. I tried hplip, tried exporting it to pdf format then printing. Googling wasn't much help as similar problem was either unanswered in forums or solved by exporting to pdf. Is there any internal printer or some other setting i have overlooked? Please guide.. Hello, A lot of *nix people often wonder the answer to the age old question : i did rm -Rf by mistake - what do i do now ? Well, there are quite a few answers to the same. Thankfully there is now a simple answer (with not so headbreaking). A friend of mine tried it out on his Ubuntu box(on ext3) and was able to recover a ton of stuff deleted over the ages. Multimedia support in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 6.06 6.10

Hello All, I was with Krish when he mentioned that he had successfully got multimedia playback in Ubuntu, by adding some repositories manually in the apt sources list and downloading extra packages. When I got back, a google search revealed this page below and that finally did it. http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/entry/2663/how-to_get_full This explains everything in a simple and straightforward way. As I use Kubuntu, in the line 'sudo apt-get install totem-xine totem-xine-firefox-plugin libxine-extracodecs flashplugin-nonfree msttcorefonts sun-java5-plugin skype banshee streamtuner xmms realplay f-spot' The 'totem-xine totem-xine-firefox-plugin' entries were removed as they are for Gnome and apt throws errors. The important package is libxine-extracodecs. I am now able to play VCDs with sound. My DVD freezes at the introductory text itself but that could be due to bad media or my DVD writer is country locked. Anyway now I am quite happy with the progress and hope others who were tearing their hair over multimedia in Debian based distros will find some relief from the link above. -- Regards, Rony.

Sabayon-Mandriva Conflict

During installation of Sabayon 3.25,the GRUB didn't have an entry for Mandriva 07,therefore,I added an entry labeled Mandriva Linux 2007 and pointed it to root partition for Mandriva namely sda5(partition 5,HDD 0) for Sabayon.But Mandriva refuses to boot with the error message given below and tells me to press any key.When I press a key,it sends me back to GRUB.FYI,my home partition(sda7 partition 7,HDD 0) is separate from my root partition in Mandriva. All partitions are logical. On the advice of a friend who knows something about Gentoo and Sabayon,I modified the entry for Mandriva in /boot/grub/menu.lst as follows: title 'Mandriva Linux 2007' root(hd0,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda5 initrd /boot/initrd.gz Presently,the error message is:(/*....*/ are comments and not part of the error message) Booting 'Mandriva Linux 2007' root(hd0,4)/*Since I have only 1 HDD,hd0 and since Mandriva root is in hda5,partition number-1=4*/ Filesystem type is ext2fs,partition type 0x83/*But I have all linux partitions as ext3fs!*/ kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda5 /*I tried sda5 too,with and without(w/o) ro and hda5 with and w/o ro*/ [Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1e00, size=0x1b68d6] /*All greek and latin to me*/ initrd /boot/initrd.gz Error 15:File not found. Connected to the internet (MTNL Triband) using USB in Kubuntu 6.06

Hello List, I was trying to connect to the internet using different Live CDs including Freespire, Ubuntu 6.10, Xubuntu 6.10. through the USB port that was conne cted to the ADSL (Dlink 502-T) router. Somehow, all the above didn't manage to configure the device automatically on boot up, though Ubuntu 6.10 listed the device on the device manger. I finally tried Dapper Drake (Kubuntu 6.06) and it automatically configured the device (allocating IP address through DHCP) and Konqueror (my smart browser - as I call it) proved that the device is working and I'm connected to the internet. I wonder, if Ubuntu has the same base as Kubuntu, why didn't ubuntu do it? AFAIK, the desktop environment is the different, but the base is same, isn't it? (This was on Dell E1405 running the Kubuntu 6.06 Live CD). Kububtu 6.10 DVD Installation.

Hello All, I am so happy. :) Finally I got rid of Etch testing and installed my long awaited Kubuntu 6.10 dvd. It has more boot options than 6.06 and the dvd has a server version included. So for installing a server one has to type 'server' or 'server-expert' at boot prompt. There is an option for command line only install in the main menu itself. Its paint program is much improvised from the earlier one that was like M$ Paint. This one has 'Krita' which has good features like photoshop or gimp. I love KDE. Long live KDE. Cheers to all the KDE guys. Keep up the good work. Multimedia audio/video is not proper as usual even after all the upgrades and codec installations. But thats normal in Linux. Open media formats play fine. Finally, those who have always been searching for an option to boot any Ubuntu cd into a live root console only, I found the solution from the net. Simply use the option that allows you to edit the boot string and add 'single' at the end of the line and hit enter. This boots the system live into a root prompt without asking for a password. I have hunted for this in the cd menu itself but could never find it. I tried 1 and rescue but that did not help. I recollect using 'single' for Red Hat. -- Regards, Rony.

Configuring sendmail to work with gmail hosted domain

Hello We have moved our domain hosting to gmail recently. We want to continue using our linux server as our local post office. The problem faced is that the sender's email address is sent as the user whose credentials are used for authentication. Suppose xyz(a)mydomain.com is the user whose credentials are used for authentication, then mail sent by me go out as Vinayakam Murugan ( xyz(a)mydomain.com) instead of (vinayak(a)mydomain.com) which was the case earlier.
