Hello everyone, This is for all the coders out there. I have written a small Ruby program to generate syntax highlighted HTML files from a source file in virtually any language (ATM Java HTML C++ Python and Ruby). Its still in 0.1 beta and lacks quite a number of features but is good enough for daily use. I was wondering if interested people in the community could test it out and give me feedback. I request the sysadmins to deactivate him and prevent him from editing pages. Compiz screenshot

Hi, Can someone with compiz/beryl make a cool looking screenshot in the cube mode? I'm trying to make a front page design for the brochure. The requirements are as follows: * XMMS/Beep Media or some other media player * A movie in progress, preferably a bollywood movie * Firefox open with a Linux or GNU site; anything that has the right words and the Tux logo * A nautilus/konqueror window with some pictures (in preview mode) * There should be no terminal program running * The shot should be high res, preferably in dark colors but clear looking at the same time. I have been searching for a screenshot on the net but sadly most either have a terminal running, or 'microsoft ipod' searches. A Linux Brochure Re-visited

First of all, great job Rony :-) Its not easy trying to say so much in so few, you certainly have done it. Kudo's to you. However, there are a couple of things i did some checking on that we could deliberate upon: 0)In the paragraph ``Why Free and Open Source Software" the word Freedom and the ethical reasons for why they should be used are very much absent. Not to mention the dangers of using proprietary software besides viruses, security problems, and data loss problems. It is later mentioned that ``Linux is not just software, it is a movement that was started to empower the people, to empower YOU with full freedom to create, distribute and use software without getting locked out until you paid for an 'upgrade' of your commercial software.". The Linux kernel was NEVER started as a movement, it was started as a student project. The only movement which started this is the Free Software movement, from which the Open Source movement offshooted. It was only later that Linus joined up with the Open Source movement. Linus has also admitted that he would never have bothered to make the Linux kernel mainstream if GNU had finished their kernel.This is very much a historical fact. i have have to really thank you Rony for this, as now it makes perfect sense why we just cannot refer to the operating system as Linux even for simplicity. 1)The word Freedom is mentioned in the ``Is Linux widely used?" paragraph right at the end, that too with an entire paragraph of tech praises preceding it. If we are mentioning technical excellence, great usability, and fantastic features everywhere - its only fair to mention the values and ethics of Freedom, the spirit of Revolution and the undying struggle against a tyranical order. Such language has caused change and shaped history in the past through printed books, let your wiki page stir the same passion for those online. 2)The link you quote http://www.linux.org/ mentions ``Linux<http://www.linux.org/#>is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world." which seems to contradict(in the newbie readers perspective) what is written on the Wiki. Moreover the only mention about GNU is with a link on the GPL: http://www.linux.org/info/gnu.html in that page to there are two links ``Foundations Software" and ``free software" both of which point to web ads via some bizweb2000.com site. Why are we putting such pages as links on our Wiki? It gives a very bad impression that we are encouraging adware. 3)The term ``Linux" is trademarked to Linus Torvalds and it should be mentioned. If you are respecting it for Microsoft you can certainly respect it for Linus. comments? Regards, - vihan

Hi, Is it possible that we write an article about GNU/Linux on desktop and get it published in some of the famous newspapers like Times of India, DNA, Hindustan Times, etc? It will have to be done by some notable people since it should be accepted by these papers. The theme could be that of a myth breaker, showing how Linux is not difficult to install, better looking, etc. Linux power on servers should get no more than a mention as the aim is to get desktop users to use it. If you use an expensive glossy paper for the cover, it will look much smarter and give the finished job some stiffness (while the paper is relatively expensive, it may not add much real cost if the quantities are small). Re the earlier suggestion by someone to print 4 or 6 or 8 pages and paste them, there is a technique of magazine/book assembly where the pages are stuck on the edge (perfect binding). There are two ways of doing this: one being that some service centers have small perfect binding systems (can't really call them machines) for very small run corporate brochures and reports, the other is to do it manually using Fevicol or a cheaper substitute (but they don't come in nice clean tubes). There has been a lot of discussion of GNU/Linux versus Linux. I am not clear on one point. It is said that GNU is the operating system and Linux is the kernel. I would like to lodge a strong protest with the admins of ILUG-BOM over this member's behaviour : <http://db.ilug-bom.org.in/wiki/index.php/Talk:Broadband_Pacenet>. He (she?) has deleted all traces of matter pertaining to decryption of Pacenet's password and inserted standard sales talk in its place. I have not undone this as I want to know whether doing so is "illegal" as the user 'Pacenetrules' claims. Perhaps we need to get a LUG meet arranged with these fanboys and ISP heads. Hello All, I am planning to start the DTP process after some days so please provide your inputs by the next 7 days. Please do check out the last paragraph on why linux is not popular and check if anything invites trouble from manufacturers or if anything extra needs to be added. The first paragraph about contributions and licences appears to be balanced so no further editing may be required. I am actually going to distribute these brochures so please help in getting the page contents finalised within a week. Another important thing is.......what about mentioning this list in the brochure and do we have any logos to go with it. Exaile

http://www.exaile.org/trac I just happened to come across Exaile. It is a GTK+ based media player very similar in functionality to Amarok. I could not find any RPMs for it though there is a package for Edgy Eft. Installation from the tarball is nothing but 'make install', but one can easily run into dependency hell since there is no configure script to tell you what you need. Make sure you have: a. python-gstreamer b. notification-daemon c. notify-python d. python-sqlite2 e. python-mutagen You might need some more, but these are what I noticed. Hey Guys, Delhi has freedel,Bangalore has foss.in. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to hold a conf here in Bombay, and as far as the topic of this conf goes its open to debate. I say we hold a security conf. Why? because India doesn't have such a conf (AFAIK) and its a topic of interest to me. It doesn't have to be anything big,just a few guys doing some cool stuff. Please comment.

Not the actual procedure on how to go about connecting to Pacenet with the decrypted password. It could be considered illegal if you post information that undermines the security or violates the policy of the company. Hence, I suggest only the decryption process be described on wiki.
