July 2008 favourite punching bag will resign from M$ as chief software architect. The orginal PR stated that he was resiginig as Chairman. But a clarification from billybaba says that he will remain chairman forever. I initiated a 'Andhera Kayam Rahe', inspired from the crook in the Shaktiman series, which soon spread like woildfire. Things took an ugly turn, and I was taken to the principal on admitting that I had done it. Luckily the punishment turned out to be much lesser than was promised initially. Cheers, Debarshi

permissions on /var/www in Ubuntu

I've messed up the ugo permissions on the /var/www directory which is now giving me a 403 Forbidden error. Details as follows. 1. 'www-data' user and group - created (I assume) when I installed apache2 and used by it. 2. The /var/www directory had 'root' in its owner and group fields. 3. I changed the owner and group of /var/www to 'www-data' and added 'root' and 'rohit' (normal user) to the 'www-data' group and changed the directory permissions to 775. Now, I get a 403 error. The apache2-default folder, which is owned by 'root' is accessible through through the server. Can anybody tell me the right permissions of the www directory so I can add/edit/delete stuff without using sudo?. -- Rohit V. Bhute http://blog.rvbhute.org

CUI (text-based) OS?

LO, If given a choice, would anybody like to come back to a CUI based Operating System...those good old days of UNIX / the 1990's (early) Linux OS? (or GNU/Linux, if it had been associated) This very thought has its roots in the short story below! Long time back in my first year (BSc I. T.), I had developed a small utility for DOS in C(we did not have GNU/Linux anywhere around in first year!) which was a "one letter DOS"(kindof emulator for DOS). Any user who would run it, would just have to type a single letter to execute / display something. For example, if one wants to clear the screen, he has to just type the letter 'b' (b for blank). Linux compatible PCI IDE adapter

I am looking to setup software RAID-1 on my home computer and need an extra IDE interface. Any ideas on tried-and-tested PCI-IDE adapters/chipsets for GNU/Linux which are locally available(read Lamington Road). I am also considering the alternative of buying a SATA hdd, in which case I would need to know of Linux compatible PCI-SATA controllers/chipsets. Once again the operative conditions would be locally available and somewhat cheap(<= 1k). Thanks, farazs

possibly a bug in ubuntu

Hi all I wanted to check before filing a bug report for ubuntu. Intermittently, i.e. about twice in five sessions, the whole UI boats up by about 1.5 to 2 times. This has become more frequent in 6.06 . This is a serious usability issue, as important configuration dialogs such users-admin are clipped at the bottom. This is observed in both gnome & kde. This has been an issue since the time of 5.04 However if this were a wide-spread issue, it would have probably been fixed by now. Hence, i am hesitating to raise a bug for the same. Please advise. It borrows tabbed browsing, rss feed reader, explicit mgmt of add ons.. list is endless. Is this right?? Are they required to acknowledge it?? under some license clause of firefox. Online petition to make HDFC Mozilla friendly

At present HDFC's tradiing site- www.hdfcsec.com can only be accessed by Internet Explorer with no support at all extended to Mozilla Firefox or Opera. This forces a lot of open source enthusiasts to keep IE on their PCs or hit cybercafes to access their online trading accounts. Triband problems

Just installed Linspire on a partition. I am unable to stay connected using MTNL's Triband for long though i have no such problems when using an old GNOME live CD. I am therefore forced to switch back to Windows XP to get online. Shiv Kumar

Checking MTNL broadband usage using ifconfig or logs

Dear List, I am using the MTNL Triband broadband service with Debian Sarge. I connect to the modem using DHCP, and get on and off by using /etc/init.d/networking (start|stop) Now, I am looking for an unobtrusive way of measuring how many bytes I use up every session, especially as I find the MTNL account check very unreliable. I heard that the TX bytes and RX bytes are the correct indicators in the output of /sbin/ifconfig eth0. I wanted to know whether noting these down is a measure of how much I have used in that session. Also, I wanted to know whether these details are logged elsewhere on my PC, in some file, so that I can extract the details from that file. (It can be assumed that I connect to the internet only from Sarge). Thank you. Aparna

Hi I use suse super and i experimented a bit and found out that using a flashdisk for a swap partition significantly improves performance. +set /cat/proc/sys/vm/swappiness a high value like 80 a must try . Steven -- Life would have been a lot more easier if we could look at the source code.

Kernel Panic: Fatal Exception.

Hi. I got a Kernel Panic: Fatal Exception error when my RHEL3 system was up and running. After this, the system crashed. Rebooting it solved the problem. The strange part here is that I got the error when the system was up and running and not during boot which is normally the case. Strangely, the messages file does not have any entry about the error. Is there any way by which I can determine the cause of the problem and hence avoid it in the future? Regards, NMK.
