To Principals and Directors and faculty members Dear Sir/Madam, I have great pleasure in informing you that we have organised a public lecture by Dr Richard Stallman at VJTI on Friday ,14 February , 2003 at 6 PM to 8-30 PM. Dr Stallman is well known to the software field as the pioneer of GNU operating system which is currently popularly used along with LINUX kernel ( hence properly called gnu/linux) . His well known contributions are gcc compilrs, gnu emacs and many other systems which are also available on propritory platforms like MSWindows. Currently when issues of spreading the IT culture in education and e-governance are occupying many minds and new avenues for jobs are being sought, it is natural that students become aware of available alternatives. With this in mind, we have taken this opportunity to invite Dr Stallman for a lecture at VJTI during his tour to India.He has earlier delivered lectures in IIT and TIFR. I take this opportunity to invite you and also faculty and students interested in current trends in software technology. Free Software is an alternative that needs evaluation and consideration . Our student organizations are also proposing to demonstrate ( before the public lecture ) some software (available on CDs at copying cost of Rs 25/- per CD containing GNU software) e.g. KNOPPIX ( a self-booting CD with several pre-installed software) , GNU-WIN-II ( a collection of software from GNU which also works on MSWindows OS and similar others. No route to host ?

Hi! Cannot get Pinnacle PCTV Plus (TV Tuner card) to work

Hi list, Problem Description: The card is auto-detected, however I am unable to change channels. More precisely, the last channel that I have viewed in Windows is the one that appears in linux (and no other channels are detected). Details: 1) Redhat 8.0, kernel: 2-4-18.14 2) Selected card = 39 in the bttv CARDLIST file. 3) using xawtv as tv-viewer. 4) dmesg says 'frequency out of range'.(when I try to change channels in xawtv) 5) According to Pinnacle, this is a special indian edition card. I wonder if being "special" is causing problems... :-) I have a sneaky feeling that this version of the bttv driver doesn't come with PAL-BG support (which PCTV PLUS uses). I have no idea whether PAL-BG is supported in the newer versions of the bttv driver. I went to bytesex.org/bttv and checked the CHANGELOG. No luck, no PAL-BG mentioned anywhere. And Yes I have RTFM and done _tons_ of searching on the web. I searched the archives and I found that "Abhir Joshi" of this list had asked this same question in October last year, but got no responses. I will be grateful for _any_ help/tips/pointers. I am desperate, since I am running only Linux on my box now. Thank you, Tarun

Setting font in Evolution

Hello Luggers, Does anybody use Evolution ? I want to change the Font for mail display. But there is no option to change the font settings. for display of mail. There is option to increase the text size, but no option to change the font. Same problem while composing mail. If I compose mail in plain text, I don't have the option to change the Font nor can I change the default font size. I understand that I am composing in plain text so which font I use is of no importance. But the default font size is so small, that while composing mail, it is painful for the eyes. Anyone using evolution has had this problem ? Have I missed out something somewhere ? Rajen.

What's new in Gnome 2.2?

Hi all! Gnome 2.2 is out (it's been over a day now) and it's great to know that two of my major complaints about Metacity (the new window manager) have disappeared. Metacity now supports "stay-on-top" and "stay-below" hints. You can also set your own hotkeys for running commands now (hope it gets that as nicely as sawfish). Most significant improvements have happened in Nautilus, which I can't say much about since I'm more comfortable with the CLI. Other goodies include program start-up notification (no more checking for disk activity to confirm that your mouse-click had some effect), "Open Recent" action like "Start > Documents" All of this sounds great. deleting oversized messages without fetching them

When using fetchmail, how do I delete oversized messages from the server without actually fetching them? The man page of fetchmail doesn't help. Visited the picopeta site after a long time. They actually had something to sell. You still hear the "lowcost" spiel from them off and on. Here is the price. Platinum: 10 Simputers, 20 SmartCards, 10 licenses for proprietary software (pricing: Rs. 190,000 in India, US $4,599 overseas) Gold: 5 Simputers, 10 SmartCards, 5 licenses for proprietary software (pricing: Rs. 98,500 in India, US $2,499 overseas) Silver: 2 Simputers, 5 SmartCards, 2 licenses for proprietary software (pricing: Rs. 49,000 in India, US $1,299 overseas) No mention of prices without the proprietory software. DOSEMU : Execution problem on console mode

I need some help on DOSEMU. I have installed the latest version (released Dec'2002) under RH 8.0 (kernel 2.4.18) and the same is working fine under X. But while switching to non graphics screen and executing the command at the prompt it crashes with the following error : In file included from builtin : 496 Error in : (line 496) parse error 1 error detected while parsing the configuration file. If anyone has a clue regarding the problem help would be appreciated. - Mohan Krishnan
