Hi everybody, I am newbie to this group.let me introduce myself. I am Chetan Ingle working in Rolta india ltd as s/w engg.Working on advanced java and redhat linux.Well When after started working on linux I simply fall in luv with linux and now I fall in luv I don't wanna come back . So I want everything on linux. Well I just read message of Saswat Banerji,I think it's easy to migrate to linux so we can convince customer.I have over 2 years experience on linux and java where i have done same thing like migrating application to linux.The only thing we have to do is give good technical support to customer after migration.Once we do for one customer then remaining customers will be convinced automatically. let me know ur views too. Linux - The Movie

Luggerz, There is an excellent documentary on Linux, available for free download on ftp://ftp.slackware.no/pub/video/The_Code-Linux.avi While some of it is in European Languages other than English, most of it is in English. It features extended interiviews with RMS, Linus, Raymond etc. There is also a 2-3 minute section where Linus talks about Linux and India. MS Proposes Disclosing Windows Source To India

Wow fellows! It seems that Microsoft really wants India. As the Economic Times article, http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/cms.dll/html/comp/default? (linked from Slashdot) points out, they are going to disclose code of Windows to a certain goverment body. According to some, this could be fatal to the rise of Linux. However, I dont think so. The secret of the astronomic rise of Linux, IMO, lies in the free spirit it fosters among developers which enables each and everyone of them to make meaningul contributions to the code (surely M$ wont allow that). This helps retain the zeal among the developers which also explains why the relatively fewer bugs OSS get patched relatively quickly. Anyways, I am rambling OT. I am anxious to hear what you guys think about it. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Free Software Foundation of India Press Release Apropos Microsoft's "investments" in India Thursday, November 14, 2002 The Free Software Foundation of India would like to bring to the attention of the Government and the general public the negative implications of the "investments" pledged by the Microsoft Chairman, Bill Gates, during his present visit to India. At the outset, it needs to be made very clear that the proposed investments have no motive other than the motive of profit and nobody should be under the illusion that these "investments" are being made for the betterment of society or for the development of India. On the contrary, the type of software developed and sold by Microsoft, proprietary software, -- software which is supplied without its underlying source code and without the freedoms to study, modify and redistribute it -- constrains indigenous development and divides society. Of particular concern is the Microsoft Chairman's pledge of money to `Project Shiksha' aimed at educating 35 lakh children, tied to the condition that the Project will purchase and use licensed Microsoft software! Mr. Gates magnanimously declared that "In education, we have very low pricing. For big education projects, we will have larger donations so that the cost of software is lower." However, this is not a question of initial software cost. Microsoft would benefit tremendously from such a project even if it were to supply it's software free of cost as long as it is Microsoft software. That is because the children and teachers would learn (or shall we say "indoctrinated") to use only Microsoft software, allowing the company to maintain it's monopolistic stranglehold in education and beyond. This is akin to an MBBS course teaching potential doctors how to use medicines manufactured only by one particular pharmaceutical company! Besides the obvious issue of monopoly, there is another far more fundamental concern, that of software freedom. As pointed out earlier, Microsoft software is proprietary -- it is supplied without it's underlying source code under a restrictive license which denies its users the freedoms to study, modify and redistribute the software. Which means that the students and teachers of `Project Shiksha' will not have the option of "looking under the hood" to see how the software works. If they find problems with the software or if they wish to customize it, they will not have the means or the right to make such corrections or modifications, either by themselves or by engaging a third party. They will have to depend solely on Microsoft to provide such corrections or modifications. They will be denied the right to share the software with others outside the purview of the project premises, leading young and impressionable minds to believe that sharing is wrong! The People and the Government of India should reject outright any grant or investment which is tied to such restrictive conditions whose sole aim is to perpetuate a monopoly and make a nation's software infrastructure so hopelessly dependent on one corporation. The Government should set up an expert committee to look into the above implications and seriously consider formulating an IT and education policy based on Free/Swatantra Software. Swatantra Software gives the users all the rights and freedoms denied by proprietary software. It enables and encourages collaborative development independent of any corporate entity thereby guaranteeing the freedom and independence of its users. It facilitates devising local solutions to local problems independently of the software's supplier. It gives the users the means and right to study how the software works and, as software educationists know, the best way to learn to write good software is by studying other peoples' work. It allows the software to be shared, both "as is" as well as in modified forms, in keeping with the ethical tradition of the free flow of knowledge. An example of Free/Swatantra Software is the GNU/Linux operating system which is in widespread use especially in the enterprise, in government departments and in academic institutions around the world. The country-wide SchoolNet program of Namibia, for instance, uses GNU/Linux. Other countries like Peru are in the process of mandating or legislating the use of free software such as GNU/Linux to ensure their independence. How to determine "clock cycle" usage

Hi there, How do i find out how many clock cycles ( basically how much time, in seconds the processor is actually spending on a piece of code ) the processor is using. i have used clock() at a few place both in linux and dos, how does i change this to true time.. in seconds. Normally CLOCK_TICKS_CONSTANT or somthing is fixed to 1e6. how is this related to the processor clock speed Whats the significance. Pls tell me if there are any documentation on all this, besides the man pages. -regards rahul

Hello, thank u 4 the ans 4 changing the access permissions 4 the windows partition. i tried the foll line, which did not work /dev/hda1 /mnt/win vfat auto,owner,user,uid=3d500 0 0 (since 500 was the uid i wanted 2 give the permissions 2) so i tried the foll line & it worked /dev/hda1 /mnt/win vfat auto,owner,user,uid=500 0 0 i did not try /dev/hda1 /mnt/win vfat auto,umask=3d0 0 0 as i felt it was not right 2 give all rights 2 all users thanx 4 all the help i hope u all will also help me with my next queries: 1. i have an epson 480 color stylus printer, which has support in rhl 7.3. the docs (/usr/share/doc/ghostscript-6.52/Devices.htm) specifies that my printer can give the foll resolutions: Xdpi=180,360,720 & Ydpi=90,180,360,720. but i don't know how 2 use these resolutions. plz tell me some place where i can learn about the "gs" command mentioned in the above mentioned doc. also i didn't understand the "YourFile.ps" part. can somebody plz hlp me out? Big Blue counters Gates' offer for Indian software By Imran Qureshi, Indo-Asian News Service Bangalore, Dec 12 (IANS) After Microsoft chairman Bill Gates' lavish offerings for health, education and proprietary software, his company's biggest competitor IBM has offered to transform India into a software industry hub if it adopts the open source standard. The world's second largest software company that is also known as the Big Blue is offering to build "enablement centres" for India to shift from being a mere software services powerhouse to a full-fledged software industry hub. "We are willing to invest heavily in the enablement centres based on what decision the government takes. It should standardise on open source and we will create centres for the software industry to flourish," Amuj Goyal, vice president, solutions and strategy, IBM software group, told IANS. "Innovation on the Microsoft platform has moved out. VCs (venture capitalists) are not investing any more on the MSN platform. Gates' visit was only to carry the message of proprietary software that will not benefit the customers," he said. Goyal, the highest ranking Indian in IBM worldwide, has helped drive the growth of the hardware leader's foray into the software business and made it a $13 billion group in just seven years, displacing Oracle from the position of the world's number two software company. "IBM was on proprietary technology in the early 1990s. We could not see outside that. We were trying to look after ourselves, not the customers, until we started the software business in 1995. Today Microsoft is on the wrong side," said Goyal, an alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. "We will put up enablement centres (like e-governance or e-business centres) for software centres. Our strategy is different. Customers need to have control and that can come only through open standards. Microsoft's strategy is to get in their proprietary technology. That's a big trap," he added. "Today you can use database from IBM or any other vendor on open standard. The reason why customers like us is because our systems are robust and scalable and for support services. If you are caught in the proprietary trap, the software business cannot be built. Those are hooks and lures he (Gates) is investing in. Customers don't want that," Goyal said. He quoted examples of the governments of Britain, Germany and Singapore that have adopted open source standards. "India does not have a software business. We want to build the future SAP or a BEA in India by focusing on open standards." IBM is leveraging India not only for its "tremendous skills in software and services" but also because it sees the country as an important market. It has set up five software research and development centres and a solution partnership centre in India. The company has committed $100 million until 2003 for the India software laboratory in Bangalore, which is being scaled up from a headcount of 500 to about 600. "But the skills in India can be applied far beyond the Indian market, primarily the English-speaking countries in the Asia-Pacific unlike China or Japan, which are country-focussed labs," Goyal said. So, was the shift in focus from hardware to software during the downturn coincidental? "No, it was not coincidental. We have been on this strategy for the last 10 years. We have recorded growth for 21 consecutive quarters," Goyal said. The software group drives about 30 percent of IBM's profits. It is the largest supplier of Internet infrastructure software, called middleware, which accounts for about 80 percent of IBM's software revenue of over $10 billion. "We are young -- just seven years old -- and growing, and we will continue to grow. Given the current economic situation, if an opportunity exists, we will go in for acquisition, as we did with Rational Software (the world's leading supplier of software tools for $2.1 billion). It makes sense because it is open standard. We have completed seven acquisitions in 18 months." --Indo-Asian News Service

Hi Guys & Gals (do we have any?), There has been mention that we should do something for Christmas as a team, especially since we have grown so much since our conception a few of months ago. I'm just sitting here thinking and off the top of my hear, how does this sound? On a saturday (perhaps the 28th of Dec although reply and discuss) we have a bit of a get together during the day where we do general linuxy geeky type things, sit around and chew over issues. There is a possibility I can get my place set up with a couple of tables for some PC's etc and we have a nice patio for sitting outside if the geekiness call for it. After that, we head into town say about 7pm and go to some kind of resteraunt, possibly a curry or thai or whatever people can handle (I know what you're gonna shout out, Mark!). But, how many people are going away for the holidays? What dates would suit? How about as early as this weekend coming (14/15)?. Reply and let us all know.
