hi linuxers,dai'm having this strange problem. all my mail clients hang, wheneverda i hit compose, reply, forward. this list includes mutt, pine, netscape.dai'm using the PCQ(based on redhat 7.1 distro ). i have recently reinstalleddathis distro and had copied my mail folders from backup to home directory (though i think.dathat should not be a problem).daanyone knows whats happ ???dadaparvez

Using Two gateways

Hi luggers, Is it possible to use two gateways, one from a fixed ip provider (hathway) on my eth1 and the other from dial-up (vsnl) on my ppp0 (modem) Using hathway, i can browse better, but download of mails is painfully slow. Using vsnl dial-up, i am able download mails, but browsing is very slow. Moreover if i use vsnl for browsing, it slows my mail download. Right now i have to manually change the gateway (using linuxconf), and then connect to vsnl. After downloading the mails, i disconnect and switch to hathway. I tried man route to change the routing rules manually, but it does not work. route add gw 202.88.136.1 Nm 0.0.0.0 dev eth1 Suggestions please Noel. Thanx, works beautifully. I could not locate the routing instructions made by ppp when the modem got connected. So i thought of writing one myself. How do i get the gateway from my ppp0. Ifconfig gives the entire details. There was a thread sometime back to mail the ip address received from the modem, but i could not locate it from the archives. mouse problems

hi luggers I have got a trivial yet frustrating problem at hand. Whenever I use the mouse the mouse pointer automatically goes to the left hand top corner of the screen and refuses to budge from there. I have tried all sorts of things to rectify it however I couldn't find a remedy. Can anybody who has had a similar problem please help me out? mount an iso ?

Hi, can anyone help me mount an iso in rw mode rather than ro mode. i need to update some files in the existing iso. mount -t iso9660 -o rw,loop=/dev/loop0 myimage.iso /mnt the above command doesn't mount it in rw mode but mounts it in ro mode. Best Regards, pm

Hi Luggers ! Is there any way to find out which files (scripts) and commands are executed after the user enters her password and before a user is presented with a Shell prompt? smb problem

Hi All, I am configuring samba server on linux PCQuest 7.1 based on redhat. My smb.conf goes like this ---- [global] ...... ....... guest ok = yes [data] guest ok = yes .......some more lines............ I think by configuring like this anybody should be able to see the linux server on windows domain and see the contents without asking for login and password. I am able to see the server in network neighbourhood but am not able to see "data" in it. It is asking for login and password. Please let me know if I might be neglecting any configuration elsewhere..... Regards Shailesh

Hi, In RH 7.0, when I use reaplayer 8.0, the following error message comes: "cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it" Audio CDs are playing fine. The sound card is Intel, built on the motherboard. Any solutions? problem with xwindows

Hi, One of our PC with 8GB HD, 64MB RAM, 52X CD-ROM Drive, is having two partitions of 4GB each. One partitions has Windows 2000, & the other Linux 6.1. When I type startx at the command prompt, it will take too much time to start the xwindows & once it starts, it will take too much time to execute even simple commands. Is it a problem with the software or any hardware component is missing. Please help me out. Thanks in advance. Help! Fire! SOS!

Folks, (Yeah, I know I should have used a more "meaningful subject" '-) My 2 HDD's have got some strange ailment (power surge?) and are in their death throes. Soon I may be left up the room without the paddle... err the PC. What I want to know is, is it possible to have a bootable CD with linux which I can use when them spinners die on me. I have already begged and borrowed these two from my friends, I have no hope for other. All I need is a minimal system which runs CMUCL + Emacs (+ ilisp). If I can have X running with a browser it will be truly wonderful. But how does one deal with all the files which get written automatically? the error records, the /var files, etc? RAMDisk? Can any (good Samaritan) with a CD-Writer, do me a huge favour and create this CD for me? And if the good Samaritan with the CD-Writer does not know how to do it, can other good Samaritans without CD-Writers help him (and me) out? The other option would be a bootable floppy. Encryption program

Hey all, Can anybody recommend me a good encrytion program - console based of course. I don't want any thing that uses a Public-Private key algorithm. I want something that doesn't use paranoid number crunching mechanisms to hide data. I am looking for something akin to the UNIX `crypt' of yesteryears! I just need to encrypt some dirty stuff on my machine ;-)) Oh yes, I have a steganography program. All replies are appreciated :-) Fart

Wireless network

How about a wireless network for our LUG? I would say we use ipv6 addresses. From preliminary enquiries I have made, we should be able to setup a 802.11b MAN without much interference, with pretty nominal license fees of Rs 3000/yr/machine. There will be a slightly higher initial cost of 802.11b wireless modems, but I think that we can build our own for a much lower cost (Someone please check this by actually going to Lamington Road, my estimate is around 5K Rs). If Dr. Nagurjana will permit us, we can hook this network to the internet through the TIFR leased line. The VSNL 2M port costs ~ Rs.6 lakh/yr. And maybe we can get in a couple of other companies to allow us to share their leased lines so the LUG is multihomed. If there are a hundred interested people, then the running cost is very low (~ Rs. 1000/mth for a wireless network hooked up at 11mbps). Anyone interested? Also, could someone contact the local dept to Telecom and ask them for the exact rules. This should be a fun project. Okay, here's the full story. Ximian requires X4.0.x, and won't work with X4.1.x. kernels 2.4.8 and up don't support X4.0.x, only X4.1.x. To get support for X4.0.x in your new kernel, download drm-4.0.x.tar.bz2 and use it instead of the drm directory under your source tree. Also, ftpfs will not work with these kernels because of changes in the superblock structure and VFS. I've figured out the problem of why X 4.0.3 doesn't work with 2.4.9. In kernel 2.4.8pre6 and 7, support for X4.0 was dropped. It now only supports X4.1 Waaaa! Hi, Threads on Linux are a lot different from other OSes. 1) Linux threads are NOT kernel level threads but user level threads. That means while the thread is running in a multithreaded program, the kernel DOES NOT know whether a process is running or a thread is running. 2) Though linux supports a lot of mechanisms absolutely essential for multithreaded mechanisms like mutexes, spin locks; it still has a lot of problems as far as porting of multithreaded applications to Linux is concerned. 3) While other TRUE UNIXes like SUN SOLARIS, DEC UNIX, HPUX have support for recognizing mutexes across the process boundries, becoz of the abv mentioned limitations, Linux cannot recognize them. So multithreaded multiprocessing application written for Solaris might not compile on Linux. 4) SOme pointers on Linux threads: go to redhat.com and give query "PORTING SOLARIS THREADS".
