hi, I just got a Logitech QuickCam Go. I'm trying to record video with it but failing. The webcam is supported (same hardware is a the QuickCam Chat). Here is what I have done after googling. I can record a jpg with (the backslashes are mine) mplayer tv:// -tv \ driver=v4l:device=/dev/video0:width=320:height=240:outfmt=rgb24 \ -frames 1 -vo jpeg I get a file 000000001.jpg in my current directory. I can also see a video feed in the video config of kopete. Hence, the webcam works. What I can't get working is this mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l:width=320:height=240:device=/dev/video0 -nosound -ovc lavc -o wcrecording.avi wcrecording.avi just shows a black screen when palyed w/ mplayer I also tried ffmpeg -f video4linux2 -i /dev/video0 /tmp/out.mpg but it barfs w/ this error [video4linux2 @ 0xb7f6b110]Missing/Wrong parameters /dev/video0: Error while opening file can someone please help ? thanks. website does not open

Website does not open Hi All, We are accessing airtel website with following address. http://117.99.128.32:81/ or http://117.99.128.32/ So far when we were having windows proxy server, we were able to access the site through our proxy, but as now we've moved to squid3.0 stable1 proxy server, the site does not open. When you hit the above address, the title gets displays in the brower but the page does not open. Which means the request is going to the airtel server & the request is coming back upto the proxy server, but it is not passing through proxy. Can someone let us know, why is this happening? which stable version should one use

Hi All, Whenever I visit squid-cache.org site. I always have a doubt is, why there are multiple stable version available for production release? What i mean is, when there is 3.0 stable release is available for production, then still why 2.7 is available. I can understand that, older versions should be available to the users, but then it may come under older version head not in the current versions list. Other thing is, when there is a latest version available, what is the need of develpment in the older version. i.e when we've ver3.0 then why 2.8. All the patches, bug fixes, new additions can be done in the newer release then why ver2.8? Is there any specific reason for that? If yes, then which version one should use? Because all the versions give you production release. I also have observed that, even after publishing the stable version on site, they withdraw the older stable version, do something & again put back. My question is, if you withdraw any software version for any reason, it does not become a stable version. If anyone is doing some bug fixing into it or even a minor change of code, it should appear in the latest stable release. This gives you a track of bugs & bugfixes. But if you takeback any stable release and put it again after some time. What does it mean? If it was stable why it was taken back? If not does it really justify the stability? For e.g. At this moment , the squid3.0 stable 10, stable3, stable 2 are withdrawn. Some peoples find my questions silly, but I've a doubt and its always better ask instead of knowing nothing. kget can resume downloads, other download managers can't

Hi all, I've been having the annoying problem for quite a few days. kget is able to resume interrupted file transfers effortlessly. However wget, curl, axel, lftp when trying to resume, send the appropriate Range Header in HTTP/1.1 but fail to get a reply back. They wait for a long long time, still nothing. What is it that causes this, and is their a solution, so that I can use wget/curl for the downloads. Thanks, Nikhil

Choice of PDA

Hi, I am in the market for a new PDA. I've been using a Handspring Visor for the last several years but it's now really falling apart :(. Initially I used to sync it to linux using coldsync + conduits but later found jpilot and things were really cool. Two way sync was a dream. I presently also have a Sharp Zaurus 5500 but with openzaurus gone and angstrom developers not really interested in developing for the 5500, I have been looking at stuff on the net and can't really make up my mind. I need the following: Sync - both ways with a _linux desktop_ natively. This is essential. I'm willing to bust my chops setting it up the first time but I'd love to have a scenario where I just plug it in (or use wifi/bt) and it syncs. Calender - with reminder Contacts - with categories (this seems to nix the Nokia E51) Password wallet - again essential, preferably something I can read on my desktop too. At present I am using gnukeyring, which is perfect for the job. Ability to install other software - I have some medical books, and OTP generator amongst other things. Think kismet/wellenreiter. Cross platform - I'd love to be able to have the ability to sync my _next_ pda/smartphone with this desktop software and not have to manually copy over all my stuff. wifi/bt - either but both would be super. I have looked at the Nokia E51, and seen openmoko on the net. Any other choces ? any gotchas ? I have looked at opensync but it does not seem to be ready yet. I get this response on a computer desktop at home. The machine is connected on the internet thru a wireless router . On the same router my laptop can access apt-get etc. On this machine , with 8.10, internet works but not apt-get. Hi All, I am Vinay from IT for Change, an NGO in Bangalore. The Gujarat government has announced a 500 crore ICT education program for its schools. (http://www.indianexpress.com/news/rs-500-cr-for-computers-in-schools/405217/ ) .They have also said that they are inclined to opt for FOSS in the schools. They have not however fully decided. What has possibly queered the pitch is that Microsoft has said that they will offer windows for free. Getting FOSS in schools will greatly benefit the Gujarat government and all the students. Hence some of us are initiating a campaign to influence the government to decide in favour of FOSS. We need the support of the FOSS community here, especially the FOSS community from Gujarat. I am writing to ILUG-Bombay though since I heard that a lot of members here are supportive of the Gujarat FOSS scenario. If a lot of people from Gujarat join us in the campaign it will help to get the government to go the FOSS way. Showing the Gujarat government that there is a vibrant FOSS community might assure them that there might be support for them if they go the FOSS way. What will also tip the scale is if can show the government that a localised (Gujarati) distro of FOSS, localised FOSS apps exists, which can be used in schools. We need the help of the community here too - to help us figure out what apps/distros should be suggested. Requesting your support in this campaign. Why do people cc mails to linuxers@mm.glug-bom.org

Hi, I have seen several list users carbon copying their mail to linuxers(a)mm.glug-bom.org. Is it necessary? The mails gets sent to the same list. If there is some difference please let me know. Thanks and regards. sadhu

Hi All, Can any one let me know, how much cache is being used by my squid3, so that I can increase/decrease it, if required. Currently I've 2GB of cache defined in spool. Is it really required? If yes, is it really been using? When I look into my access log file, I can find most of the time it is TCP_MISS/200, TCP_MISS/204, TCP_MISS/304.
