If it is possible, will somebody please be kind enough to come over to my place at Bhayandar and install linux on my Pentium 2 350? Plus check whatever is wrong and fix that up. [Commercial] Hosting a software development project

I want to know the functioning and management of a open source software development. Is it possible to host, sponsor and co-ordinate software development project? The idea is to invite part of industry to contribute to this development. Case: AutoCAD - its core tool for civil engineering consultancy firms and their industry. Legal deployment costs a lot. i.e Hardware+Windows+Security+basic utilities+ACAD There is cost for upgrades, every 5 years. Software companies expect upgrades in 2 years. India is becoming IT leader and Software Legal issues are showing up Is it feasible to setup an organization for developing usable open CAD for Mumbai/India based civil engineers? and provide training for the use of CAD While discussing FOSS alternatives I raised this possibility and certain civil engineers/CAD users are interested, Civil engineering Associations are approachable. Making linux well supported among vendors/manufacturers

The mobile market will exceed the computer market in coming years or has already exceeded the computer and related gadgets market. Nokia and other manufacturers routinely make softwares for their hardware products for the windows and macintosh operating systems. Unless we, the FOSS users request them every now and then thru email, feedback on their websites, online forums etc etc to also support these softwares on the linux platform, Linux will get increasingly sidelined and less people will even come to know about it. Getting linux on the printed packaging of a product (visibility) is very important for awareness generation. 95% of the battle of getting linux popular will be won if it becomes visible to the layman. I request FOSS users to constantly strive to make linux visible to laymen thru whatever creative ideas they have, every now and then, specially thru requests to manufacturers etc and online forums. HP K209a installed on Debian 5 (Lenny)

Hello, Just finished installing the HP K209a PSC (with economy cartridges) in Lenny. Went to http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html and after entering the proper details of the OS, it confirmed that I had to download the package. All instructions are on the site with screenshots. However after a successful package install (select the custom options and choose yes to un-install the older hplip package) , neither the printer or scanner got detected. The user (me) was added to the lp, saned and lpadmin groups and viola the printer and scanner was detected. For some reason the HP utility does not start from the KDE menu. One has to open a gui terminal and type hp-setup. On doing hp- and tab twice you get a lot of utility options. Using the hp gui itself the printer was installed. Kooka detected my scanner and I was scanning away. If anyone wants to have a better utility, I found one in my apt-cache. It is called 'quteinsane' and it is a frontend for sane. Need help in deciding HDD for Samba Server..

Hi, I am using Dual CPU AMD Opteron2378 with Sata harddrive with 32MB cache for Samba File Server. I have installed CentOS5.3 64bit on it. Currently 80 users are using that server at same time. All users are using OpenOffice, Write, Pagemaker on their desktop machines and they work on server directly. It gives good performance. There are 10 users who use CorelDraw & Photoshop for their work and they work locally. Now I put their data on server told them to work on Server directly. But it reduced their working speed by 50% than locally and on server DiskIOs also got increased. So then I disconnected all users and only provide access to those 10 users. So they are working on the server dedicatedly but still performance was slower than local. Query : How can I increase Performance for them ? what configuration I should have to serve those users as a File Server ? Note: All network cables are CAT6 and switches are of 100MBs. Query: If HDD is the weakpoint then, will SAS hdd be helpful under these circumstances? I heard that SAS HDD are faster that Sata. They have 2 catagories 3Gb/s and 6 Gb/s. Even we can get PCIxpress card for SAS ports from Promise. Can Linux supports these cards? Thanks in advance Regards Neelesh
