We plan to distribute *Ubuntu Linux* to all participants ( around 50) so please guide me from where I will get those CDs of Ubuntu Linux. One more problem please guide me *How to debug using gcc* or any other book for that because I plan deliver the lecture on that topic. DSL not working in SUSE 10.0

Hello all. My internet provider switched to PPPoE recently. It works fine in Windows. I used `adsl-setup' to set up the DSL connection in SuSE, and ran `adsl-start'. Even though it said `Connected', none of the webpages show up. Any pointers? I forgot to save the output of `adsl-setup', would that help? Thanks in advance ...

PPPOE is standards based technology and it effectively ensures access from all OS's. , and not just windows as is the case of SIFY who use a LAN-Gateway model and just have a shitty proprietary dilaer for windows.

Dear Sandesh For configuring your pppoe service in SUSE 10.0 there is no need to use rpppoe i.e adsl-setup and all that... simple configutr it using smppd which is a very good utility for adsl.Go to YAST->N/W devices-> DSL and follow the Menu. (Type Alt-F2 and then type yast)to run YAST

If you are using any GNU/Linux distro, and considering dial-up, make sure, you have your modem drivers ready for that! If you don't want to waste time searching for it, I would recommend, MTNL's TRIBAND as the best option for any purpose. If you are very keen in downloading distro's then you can go for MTNL's 590 Night Unlimited PLAN, else you can go for 199 per month scheme. OT:Good Dialup service

Hi I have a broadband service of Exatt. I have it since last 6 months. It is a monthly service(per month payment +unlimited usage) from a local dealer with a makeshift office who provided internet connection for various ISP's. In the last 4 months there has been too much downtime. Sometimes when you need to check mails or just get on to IRC or chat with relatives it is down. Sometimes the service is down for 3+ days.Contacting the person does not give any plausible answers. I had taken a broadband connection with the thought that I would get a always on connection. Also it would be easier to download distros through bittorrent which I have done in the past months. But after that I realised that I do not download distros everyday. So my usage was limited to downloads of distros and other stuff and surfing/chat/irc/email Although I am continuing with the existing broadband for another month I want to have a dialup for those intermittent downtimes. [OT] Reliance fixed line username/password.

Hi. I'm using Reliance fixed line phone for Internet access with wvdial on RHEL 3. I've had no problems with it till they changed the dial up number from 30335151 to 172479. Now it dials all right, but refuses to authenticate me. I'm using a blank username and blank password as before. Has anyone managed to connect using the new number? Their CC ofcourse "have not been informed about any other changes except the dial up number." Thanks in advance. Regards, NMK.

Frugalware:automounting/unmounting media

I have installed frugalware 0.4 and installed hal/dbus/pmount/udev. Whenever I plug in a usb stick or a cd KDE(3.5) pops up a dialog but is unable to mount it. Also no entry is created automatically in /media eg. /media/sda1. What is to be done to enable auto mounting/unmounting. its ok if KDE's media:/ protocol cannot access it but it should be automatically mounted in /media and it shouldn't need a fstab entry. The Free Software movement has been a beacon of inspiration in this light where other's have chosen to stay silent or less vocal. Nagrajuna's mail "OSS Philosophy Explained" makes absolute sense in this context. i saw the responses to it by the OSS community. Russ Nelson wrote that "Richard appeals to intellectuals by advocating for the concept of freedom. Intellectuals constitute a minority, say 10% of the population. We appeal to the majority by advocating for the value of freedom. The other 90% of the population whom Richard cannot reach will be convinced by the experience of freedom rather than the concept of freedom."(see : http://mm.ilug-bom.org.in/pipermail/linuxers/Week-of-Mon-20060424/025576.ht= ml). However understanding a concept is the 1st step actually realizing a truth. If you mearly "experience" without knowing or acknowledging you simply take things for granted and that is something what the majority of people actually do. The folly is when this happens, people don't care about that concept(in this case the concept being FREEDOM) and are happy in their "experience". However when the "experience" is lost or threatened by "Big Brother" they feel the pinch and thus it becomes important to educate and talk about it. Which is EXACTLY what the Free Software movement proactively does. Isn't it therefore prudent to start acknowledging the concept NOW rather than until its too late ? Michael Tiemann very eloquently wrote "The OSI chose to create a tent larger than the free software tent. We accepted non-free licenses because we wanted to give voice to people writing software and sharing source code who did so for reasons other than moral freedom. Is it wrong to accept works that strive for technical excellence independent of social agendas? As a scientist and an engineer (BS CSE, University of Pennsylvania 1986) I have to say no:the scientific method is, and must be independent from all moral frameworks. Does this make science immoral or amoral? Certainly there are those who apply or ignore science in immoral ways. But science itself is concerned with evidence and falsification, not morals. True people do share code for reasons other moral ones, however the problem arises when society at large follows this trend then we tend to ignore the value of morals themselves - and the resulting society becomes a living embodiment of cayoss. i agree with the scientific method and approach of "evidence and falsification" but scientific method is a function of scientific conduct and more importantly of scientific ethics. These "moral" grounds are VERY clearly defined for study, research, experiment and process. Therefore are morals not a part of science altogether and wouldn't following them be consistent with scientific method ? Don't get me wrong, i have a lot of respect for many people in the Open Source community i also acknowledge they have given us a lot of great software and licensed it GPL. They have even brought GNU/Linux to a number of places, however i do not agree with their philosophy that ignorin= g the value system of freedom and morals for the sake of "catering to the masses" or "increasing user base" is the way to go. Going back to the original topic i think we ought send ATI a piece of our mind. i suggest each person send a mail to their Public Relations department. Well first of all I must tell you something about pacent if your friend has just gone for a new connection.Pacenet is one of the worst Companies (forget that its an ISP) i have ever seen in terms of Customer Service and can u believe that the situation was so frustrating that I actually had to meet the managing Director to solve my regular disconnection problems, even then the problem still persists.Well the list is actually very long and trust me the day MTNL starts giving an unlimited download for 24 hours ill rush to the nearest exchange.Now coming to your question well 1.) First of all you will need to call up pacenet and ask them for a Linux account(which initially they will not agree, and if they deny then please post it )well after that you should also ask for the DNS addresses cause they are required 2.) Now you will need to install Rpppoe RPM i.e (Roaring penguin point to point over ethernet) that's the protocol that ISP's use to give you a account. 3.) Now on the konsole type "adsl-setup" to setup your account 4.) Now to connect type "adsl-connect" and bingo open up firefox and enjoy !!!!!! -- To Love The Penguin(aka TUX) You Need To Be As Faithful As A Puppy

Hi, Has anyone succeeded in setting up pacenet internet on ubuntu or fedora? A friend has pacenet set up on windows and she needs it set up on linux. She's not too familiar with the setup on windows or how to set it up on linux, but if anyone has ideas, I could explain it to her. This is in Andheri East if it helps. Also I wanted to know one thing...24Online client uses pppoe or what? I mean do you get a global IP address when you connect from 24Online clients or is it LAN based like Sify.

2 virtual hosts in apache2

Using SuSE 10.0, Apache 2.0.54. Looked through the Apache online manual on setting up virtual hosts and created a vhosts.conf file - mostly copy/paste from a template (see listing below). I have also set up bind on my LAN to resolve both "genesis" (IN A 192.168.1.65) and "linux-install" (IN CNAME genesis). I restarted apache and bind daemons after changes to their respective files. http://genesis works fine and shows index.html in "/home/www/html" but ... http://linux-install shows the same index.html as above instead of the directory listing of the Linux distribution tree I have installed @ /mnt/C. I have tried replacing * with IP# but same result. Defining "linux-install" as A record - same result. Hello all, This is one example to show that MTNL has improved its CC and how this list helped me in solving a problem. Today I was at a client's place where I was installing a second hand pc (W 98) The pc had a usb port only so the driver was loaded but come what may, no sites would open as dns would not resolve. The client uses a voip box independently connected to the adsl's etherner port. Acording to the client the net was running till the old pc conked off a few months ago. So I reinsatlled the drivers, tried everything possible to get the usb net working. The ethernet side was working as he could make international calls. Finally after more than a hour, I called up mtnl's CC. He asked me to check various settings till we came to WAN settings. There I was surprised to see the connection type was 'bridged'. I asked the CC if it should be PPPoE and he agreed. The user_name/passwd was added and the net was up and running. But now the voip stopped working. >From this list I had read about bridging and using pppoe in the comp. itself. So the raspppoe drivers were downloaded and installed. The adsl was again set to bridged mode and the 'raspppoe' command was run. It searched for available servers and I selected the first one and created a dialup connection. The user_name and passwd were added and now the net as well as voip box is usable. The NDIS patch too was downloaded to enable smooth operation in 98. All this was possible thanks to this list and its informative discussions. Kernel compilation with grub.

Hello All, I just compiled the latest kernel 2.6.16.11 from source and its created a vmlinuz-2.6.16.11 file along with a link vmlinux in the /boot folder. Since 'make bzImage' only creates a kernel image, the 'make install' was used finally to get it into the boot folder for grub. In grub's menu.lst, I configured the kernel as /boot/vmlinuz and root=/dev/hdan where n is my partition and its the same entry as in my existing kernel entry. The image entry is #shed as there was no img created. When I boot into the new kernel, after a series of initial text, it gives a kernel panic at the root= entry. Its the same as before so why can't it mount the VFS on that partition? It cannot recognise hdan. (n is a number) Any clues? I am from same area. I have setup my pacenet connection in fedora. They use pppoe. You have to call them up and tell them that you want to use linux. They will give a new username like "yourusername@linuxuser" Then you can login using Rp-PPPOE from the new ID. BTW Ubuntu has pppoe builtin I think , so once you get your new usename just issue command "pppoeconf" as root and it guides you through a wizard. I was never able to connect from Ubuntu though as it kept on giving errors regarding maximum MTU/MRU. I didnt try later in Ubuntu but I think an MTU of 1412 will do it. -- The Future is Open...The Future is LINUX

Hi, I have an MTNL Triband connection (DSL 590 NU) with a D-Link 502T ADSL Router. I want to host a web server on my PC. I am using Apache as the web server software. The index page loads without any problem with the loopback address(127.0.0 1) and the local address assigned by the router(192.168.1.2). But when I try to access the index page with the actual IP address (59.176.x x) it shows up the Router's configuration page but not the index page. I have also tried doing the Port Forwarding or setting up a Virtual Server for port no. 80 but still it doesn't works. The router uses DHCP for assigning IP addresses and theseare the ATM settings: PVC - Pvc0 VPI - 0 VCI - 32 Virtual Circuit - Enabled WAN Setting - PPPoE/PPPoA Any help or clues ? Regards, Antriksh

Hi, It seems that BSNL has launched an unlimited 256Kbps connection(http://bsnl.co.in/newsdetailed.php?news_id=296). The cost is 900 bucks a month and it includes a landline at zero rental. MTNL has also launched its version of unlimited 256Kbps connection at 1399 bucks a month. Unlimited connection mean no caps on data or time and an always on connection. Now why are the Mumbai subscribers being left behind? Hopefully they should be launching an unlimited scheme soon. Anyway, the reason for this post is that I see many people using MTNL Triband connections. I was wondering if they could give me some heads up on the quality of Triband. I have heard that their upside is that they good speeds & uptime but their down side is pathetic customer care. Is that correct? On a 256K connection do you guys get constant 30-32KBps speeds or do they drop? Is anyone using Airtel DSL? They have a similar scheme and are probably launching in our area in about a month or so. But I've seen that the general opinion about airtel is that they have good CC & availability but bad speeds. For me, availability, speeds matter a lot. CC comes later but I surely dont want to run to the Prabhadevi exchange everytime something goes wrong with my connection / router. I simply dont have the time or inclination to visit their exchanges. What say you guys? Any good / bad experiences? Tips? Please let me know. -- Dinesh A. Joshi

Oh, I forgot to mention this! They also give you a free email account (4 MB). The interface of this is pretty simple, clean and soothing. It took two weeks for TRIBAND to be activated for me , after registration. I have been using since October 2005, and its really good. Installation charges are 500 - one time installment (for router) 300 - DSL testing and installation (in the first month's bill). One the LINE is ready for TRIBAND, they call up and inform that they are testing for ADSL line, and then send a person who would get along the ADSL router and configure the internet! __________________________________________________________ Yahoo! I get speeds of 25 KB/sec - 30 KB/sec most of the times. For a few downloads, at times, it runs down to 16 KB/sec. >What say you guys? Any good / bad experiences? Tips? > Please let me know. Yesterday (or maybe the day before), one of the members posted the entire RHCE examination paper to the group. Take a look at this: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linuxvadapav/message/1369 This kind of activity is very damaging. This is not just an issue of someone posting the paper on the internet, but I know of 'institutes' where students are given the paper to study before they give the exam. This degrades the value of the certificate and should be stopped. I hope people on this list take notice of this. Hi , My friend have some problem with "extended desktop" . ___ I have a laptop with 915g express chipset. I have enbled dual head using system-config-display Dual head is woking but second secreen is clone of first. even after enbaling xinerama and disabling clone it is still showing clone on sencond monitor. I have changed the resolution of second screen(800x600) by editing xorg.conf. But it still showing exact clone of first moniter (1024x768). Hello All, At the linux meet at HBCSE Rajeev had given a very nice demo of the new display drivers of linux that are well suited for 3D rendering. One application demonstrated was a 3D file browser that works like a walk through into a room with files and folders shaped like 3D objects. This type of 3D walk through has tremendous potential for corporate films and demos. Future operating manuals for electronic equipment could also be in 3D form. One important potential for this is in the shopping mall industry. Instead of visitng a crowded mall, getting trolleys entangled and walking for a few hours, an exact replica of the mall can be made available to the customers in the form of a CD or DVD depending on the content size. The mall walk through will have features like virtually removing the product from its shelf and turning it around to examine it. A more advanced feature may also allow the virtual shopper to open the jars or boxes and see the actual content inside, something the mall will not allow otherwise. The software can be made available as a direct installation or to make it platform independent and live, it can be made into a live linux distro that does not do anything except detect minimum hw like kb, mouse, usb and concentrates fully on providing the maxiimum video and sound drivers and the actual application that will run live. Hi, The GNU/Linux Users Group of National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur is now accessible at http://www.glug-nith.org/. It is still early days and a lot of things are left to be done. One thing we have not yet put is a copyright notice. Since we have taken a few sentences here and there from Wikipedia and http://www.gnu.org/, would that be an infringement of copyright? Or do we need to give Wikipedia's name in the credit and mention that they hold the rights. Secondly, will it be ok to distribute RHEL ISOs on the site?
