Puppy Linux 1.0.8 Rocks.

Hello All, I downloaded the file 'puppy-1.0.8r1-mozilla.iso' from http://www.puppylinux.org/user/downloads.php?cat_id=1and burned it into a CD. It is an amazing and cute distro that surprisingly detected my display, sound as well as my usb pen drive. [P4 2.66, Intel 845 GEBV2, 256 Mb RAM, 80 GB HDD] It has a very nice looking desktop giving all the useful icons with their functional names in text. It is very useful for home users who want a simple straightforward system with a good foundation. It has 5 boot options and initially I selected option 4 (RAM only). When you boot into it, it asks you to confirm your hardware and gives options for sound along with a test sound to know everything is up. Display settings come in different combinations and I used 1024x768x24. Thats something very handy. The best part of this live cd is that it can be installed into a pen drive or hard drive. It has these options in the live cd itself so no messing around with command line codes. . It can be installed on a seperate partition and uses ext2 as the fs. This os is useful to give to family members who want a simple and easy os and their usage will not mess with the existing distros. It works only as root so it will be equivalent to Win 98 or Win Me. It has a firewall setup too so that closes all your ports from outside. Applications wise, it has everything one can imagine in an standard OS. Its media player could directly play vcds with proper video and sound. The trancend flash drive was detected and usable too. It can mount ntfs partitions in read only mode. Some points to note while installation:- 1. Don't install the grub boot loader if you already have grub distros installed, add the entries to your existing grub later. 2. Due to that, it does not install the image file in the hdd. It only saves the vmlinuz file in the /boot folder. Therefore, the file 'image.gz' will have to be manually copied to that /boot folder. For the newbies, here is that part of menu.lst in grub that was added later to the existing distro. Partition numbers will vary. # linux installation on /dev/hda12. title PUPPY LINUX 1.0.8 (on /dev/hda12) root (hd0,11) kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda12 initrd /boot/image.gz savedefault boot 3. The sound did not load during hdd bootup so I booted the live cd again and selected the option to ask for the partition. There I pointed to my partition and the pup001 configuration was saved there. After the live bootup with sound working, I booted through the HDD and sound was up. This distro should be ideal for home users, old pc users ( not tried it out) and people scared of using computers. Got a chance to catch linux world sydney. Thought id sent across some interesting observations. Indicators of the future... (desktop related features) Saw Ubuntu Beta of the new Dapper Drake scheduled (delayed a bit) for May/June. The new XGL interfaces ..... http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=401&num=1 One word. WOW. Pictures do not do Justice. Seen an average comp. with an average display card do some pretty amazing effects. novell desktop also scheduled for June also comes with XGL. Same really cool desktop features. http://www.novell.com/linux/xglrelease/ apparently there is something called "aglx" which the FC team have been working on, which gives the same features... it doesnt come with FC5, but can be put on as I was promised. But did not get a chance to see it yet. for the adventurous, its in extras I believe somewhere... Gnome 2.6.14 is FAST. Real FAST. Got a chance to met with a few developers, think of this, gnome 2.8 on debian. thats right Debian! uses more than 120-130 mb (64bit port), 2.6.14 takes 80M. (seen this on my own piece, so i can vouch for it.) in short, future looking good. More WOW factor. Better hardware support. regards Erle

Trying my hand at linux after burning my fingers with mandrake ages ago. got hold of an old Live CD of Debian with Gnome 2.4 and find the desktop architecture really cool. Here are a few questions I need answered: 1.Will someone educate me on the new Debian 4 release? What are the system requirements? 2.ToI of yesterday has the piece on Knoppix having a desktop even better than Windows Vista. Can it be installed or it exists only on a Live CD format? Serial Port control of Zenega CD-1005S

BlankIs there any way to control the Zenega CD-1005S (supplied by DishTV) through the serial connection using a PC. Actually, all I want to do is to be able to change the channel so I can record a program on my PVR. Call for Developers for the CSLinux project

Dear Linux hackers, As you may be aware, we, the Computer Science Linux User's Group, are attempting to make our own re-branded distribution of Linux based on Fedora Core 5. This distribution is aimed at having a customised set of packages that we need in our BCS/MCS/BE/ME/MCA/Diploma syllabus so that one set of three or four CDs can be moved around without carring peripheral CDs for Java, plugins, multimedia, etc. Moreover, we were mailed regularly by people that they had trouble setting up Postgres, PHP, tomcat, Perl, JDBC, etc. during their time of critical needs. It is definately not fair to expect people to learn how to configure these things at the last moment when practicals are declared within a week. Even if someone is capable of configuring these, it is likely that they may forget at the last moment and also likely that people wont want to spend time configuring stuff on the day previous to the exam at the cost of studying. For this purpose, we also aim to provide pre-configured RPMs and configuration scripts that can achieve this task within a few minutes. In fact, CSLinux version 1 released last year allowed even first year students to set up many things that TYs were having trouble with. This version will be aimed at pushing this simplicity and ease-of-use to the next level. With GUIs, web-based tools for remote management of nodes in labs, configuration replication scripts for applying common settings to multiple laboratory nodes, user management scripts for handling the thousads of users on college servers, etc. For more information on what's been going on in regard to CSLinux, you are encouraged to join the CSLUG group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cslug and go through the archives http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cslug/message . We have also started a Wiki seedwiki.com/wiki/computer_science_linux_users_group/ for simplifying this effort and the link to it can be found in he CSLUG archives. We request your participation, support and encouragement in this effort. Please do spread the word around. We need all sorts of people to help us out. We need graphics designers to design the themes, logos, images, wallpapers, bootscreens, etc. for CSLinux. We require people to modify the installer Anaconda. We need people to modify RPM files and change the default configuration in them. We need people to make and build binary RPMs out of source tarballs for packages whose RPMs that may not already be available or when i686 RPMs may not be available. We also need developers to develop the configuration scripts, the small tools that we will provide with CSLinux and changing initscripts. Finally and most importantly, we also require the BCS/MCS/BE/ME/MCA/Diploma community to contribute their academic projects to be put up on CSLinux. This is to encourage students to make professional-grade real-life applicable projects by providing them a large exposure within the peer community. Also, we need people to search for sponsors. For example, we may approach coaching classes to sponsor the project in return for putting up their ads/banners on our default wallpaper, the GNOME/KDE splash screens, the default gdm login logo, and the CD covers and the prints on the CD themselves. Absolutely any help will be appreciated a lot. We would like CSLinux to become a living example of an open source project that is self-sustaining, started off by students on their own, and a successful business model within Pune (although it will be strictly not-for-profit). If you feel that you have completed any assignment from BCS/MCS/BE/ME/MCA/Diploma to perfection and would like the community to see it, then we will also be including such assignments for reference on the distribution. This is a very highly-demanded feature by many. Your contribution on recommendations to what tools, packages and documents that should be included in CSL would be highly appreciated. Email Archival & some general advice

Hello everyone, Thanks once again for coming forward to help me with the copying of messages in at the smtp gateway, using synonym or postfix configuration settings. I hav a few more things to ask u guys : 1) How can i use MySQL in a shell script? I wanna enter some values in some tables in MySQl through the shell prompt only. I need to enter these values, at the shell prompt, using the username and password, without entering the sql prompt explicitly, is this possible? is there any one line command like e.g in ncftp, where i can specify the username, password, the values etc, all in the smae command line? 2)CAn u guys specify me some place where i can find some detailed info on Synonym and its working,?? the documentation on its homepage is pathetic for a new user like me. 3)Is there any method, on Linux, with which i can index a text or mail message on the basis of keywords? actually i think, indexing email messages on basis of keywords would be a very helpful feature to use at the time of retrieval and so i want to include it in my solution, although i have tested MAIRIX, but all it does is, take an mbox, index it and create a data base file, and when u ask it to search, it gives out the messages which contain the keyword used as a basis of search. 4)How do u people know so much about so many things? CAn u describe ur strategy , where u get all this info and how do u remember it for extended periods of time? So, many questions in one mail, i fear, someone of u will surely flame out on me, but please try to understand, i myself am taking my first steps into this wonderful world of Unix/Linux and am finding out a lot o new things, just recently i read Maurice.J.Bach about Unix internals and i wanna start on Linux kernel now, and i hope in a few months, i will also be helping some of the guys her in my own small way. hello friends, i apologize again for asking a question again to this group rather than solving someone's problems. Its bcoz i hav too little experience compared to u guys, in terms of programming, exposure and knowledge about linux. i request u people to help me out in one small matter yet again. I am developing a mail archival system and due to suggestions of many people in the company i am working for(its a student project), we all hav decided to change our design thoroughly. Since one of the foremost task for a mail archival system is tocomply to regulatory requirements, which mostly are to store each and every email that is recieved by the company, we hav thought about an idea, of copying the email as soon as it enters the mail server, but before it gets stored in the personal mailbox of the user. The idea is to install our own software agent at the SMTP gateway to grab the mail before our MTA does and then copy the mail and then send one copy for archival and hand over the original mail message to the MTA. This way the MTA recieves the mail normally, while it is archived also. I apologize for sending such a big mail, but I also want u ppl to suggest how could i explain this problem statement in short or somewhere else. I need u guys to help me in the nuances of netiquette for using mailing lists like this. Help with building SpiderMonkey JS engine

Hi all, I'm currently working on a project involving the integration of the SpiderMonkey JS engine with an Apache module I've made. I'm using Debian sarge currently. I have installed the package libsmjs-dev to get the JS API. Unfortunately, whenever I try to compile even the sample code, it gives me a whole lot of errors in the library files. The first error it gives is /usr/include/smjs/jstypes.h:224:6: #error "Must define one of XP_BEOS, XP_MAC, XP_OS2, XP_WIN or XP_UNIX" I figure this is due to the fact that I've not built the JS engine. Does anybody know how to build the JS engine given the packages in Debian, or even any other method? USB drive: size mismatch

I have an iball 256mb usb drive. I had previously installed slax on it and now want to install a later version. But when i formatted the drive with both fdisk and cfdisk they had both created 253mb partitions called sda1. But whenever i mount it df -ha shows that the partition is only 179mb. I have tried rebooting the computer since fdisk said the table would be read on next reboot but it fails. *Minutes of Mark Shuttleworth's talk at IIT-Bombay* The GNU/Linux Users Group of Mumbai held an additional GLUG meet in january at KReSIT, IIT-Bombay. Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth interacted with the GLUG members and shared his views and ideas regarding ``Free Software'' and how it made a perfect business sense. This talk was attended by about 60 people coming from all over the country. Falling short of time, Mark Shuttleworth quickly talked about the following points, apart from answering questions. * Community and its background: Before starting his talk, Mark was eager to know about the Mumbai's GLUG community, its background.. since every GLUG is unique in its own respect. He then talked about his own background and about his ventures. * Ubuntu Organisation Structure: Mark talked about how ubuntu project started and what its goals are, how Ubuntu project is different from Debian yet how both still manage to collaborate with each other, how latest packages are adopted from upstream to make Ubuntu's archives always fresh. * Business Sense: Quoting Mark's own words, ``... knowledge and software are copyable. Their value or quality does not decrease when it is shared..'' According to him, this makes a perfect business sense. Ubuntu project, and all the best things that they produce, will always remain freely accessible to the entire community, individuals or large companies alike. Canonical is in a self sustaining business since it provides software services to organisations which are willing to hire them. Canonical has tied up with LPI and plans to start certification programs for Ubuntu professionals. * Free CD distribution: Mark answered several questions related to free software distribution and the rationale behind it. There are several parts of world where internet access is extremely costly. Free CDs therefore have an important role to play. Some questions were asked about the free CDs that Canonical ships worldwide and how some people tend to misuse the resources. Mark then recalled an incident wherein a `gentoo' fanatic tried to drain out Canonical's money by ordering 500 CDs. * Dapper Drake Preview: Mark gave a brief idea about the upcoming ubuntu release codenamed `Dapper Drake' and why it is going to have a 3 year(desktop)/5 year(server) support cycle and security updates. Dapper is also a distribution which is going to be certified by third party application providers like IBM. Starting from Dapper release, users will have the luxury of a GUI installation program and a single CD which acts as both live and installable. * Freedom Toaster etc. Answering a question related to Freedom Toaster, Mark explained the entire concept behind it and how the whole idea came into a reality during a brainstorming session. We couldn't talk about his space travel however due to lack of time. - tea break Mark personally autographed on Ubuntu CDs and stickers and posed for group photos. [INFO] NTFS in Linux

Hello All, Recently switched over to ntfs in windows just to explore its security level and was quite impressed by its similarity to linux. It gives only r-x access to the windows dir to unpreviledged users, so the chances of a virus writing itself to the c:\windows\ or c:\windows\system32\ folders is practically eliminated. One user cannot view the other's documents. The next issue was mounting the ntfs partition in linux. It got mounted easily without any hassles ( Kubuntu 5.10 ) but it was read only. No amount of tweaking the mount defaults changed it. Then I found this utility that I installed and now I am able to mount as well as write to the ntfs partition even as a user by simply replacing the file system type in fstab from 'ntfs' to 'captive-ntfs'. http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/ Regards, Rony. ___________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Hello All, After months of singing praises of Linux, finally I got the customer to try it out. It was on an existing M$ system that had been running since its installation for 4 years. It had survived some power breaks in the past and was running smoothly. In order to avoid touching his data, I loaded Kubuntu 5.10 on the fourth partition of the hdd. During installation in progress it did show a couple of error messages that some files ( That looked like M$'s system restore files ) were reporting different block sizes and I chose the option ignore as I had already cleaned his last partition. The installation went smoothly and I was able to boot into Linux as well as M$ a couple of times and even backed up the last drop of his data after that. Then I went on to demonstrate the bootup screen and how to choose between the system and the system was booted into linux. It got stuck at kernel panic. After a forced reset, the bios gave an error for the hdd. Instead of the entire text of the hdd label like 'Samsung ......', it only showed a garbled 2 character text. After the next restart, it disappeared altogether and right now I am in a situation thats commonly known as 'la$@# lag gayey'. Since I am promoting linux free of cost, as a community propaganda, providing a free HDD along with linux is a bit expensive and I would like to know some things as mentioned below. 1) Can this HDD be reprogrammed or forced with a low level format? Right now the bios cannot even detect it. 2) Is there any software that detects the health of a HDD before it can be loaded with Linux? 3) What could have gone wrong in this case and what precautions do I need to take to avoid such mishaps in future? If it doesn't match, it increase the value of the variable "NM_CNT" by 1. The maximum value of NM_CNT in the loop is 2, but once it comes out of the loop, its value becomes "0". $ verify_record temp/a 2 (in loop)NM_CNT=1 (in loop)NM_CNT=2 NM_CNT=0 Can anybody help me to solve this problem? VPN Website Browsing issue

Hi, I have setup up a VPN using poptop`s PPTP in linux server and using windows client. i am able to connect and surf the internet But some websites do not open Like the pages which has a redirection to different site does not works ex. are bnmg.com cars.in black.in The Iptables rules i am using is iptables -A FORWARD -i ppp0 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -o ppp0 -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE Why cant i browse redirected sites ?
