I had one of my clients install MTNL ADSL broadband 256kbps. It has been up for about 2 months. So far it is working very well and has had almost zero outages. It has worked far far better than i had expected and beats any of the private isps. The bandwidth varies between 220 and 224kbps. With occasional drops to 216kbps. The dns is sloow but not a problem with a local caching dns.The MTNL engineers were very enthusiastic and spent several hours learning how to set up the dlink adsl modem.Apparently dlink / mtnl dont train their people. Any one with any more experiences before we can recommend it to all. rgds jtd

I have MTNL TriBand out of their Khar(W) xchg. As you said it is good when it works but I have experienced a few outages and was not able to get thru to their support. On the positive side, during the aftermath of 26/7, my ADSL service was unaffected though my landline on the same wire pair was OOS for 7 days. If your clients can live with some outages then I guess it is a cost effective solution. If you have the luxury of a Linux server, then use bind, dhcpd on it rather than on the DSL modem. As for support, I got to know the linesman responsible for the neighborhood. Thru his chain of command I am able to get some support. I have found the engineers at Khar are quite knowledgeable about IP networks and were helpful. Regarding the 502T modem, I ran into a couple of weird behaviors: 1. Need MSIE to program port forwarding rules! I cannot not program any port forwarding rule using Firefox (Linux and Windoze) or Konqueror. 2. When the config pages are accessed with Firefox, some of the icons on the various pages do not load; over a period of 10-12 days it's DNS relay would stop working and withing 2-3 days thereafter it would stop working completely. Only a hard reset of the unit would bring back it's functionality. DLink was not able to resolve the issues over the phone. Finally, I took the unit to DLink Tech. support center @ Malad West. The tech. support came back and said nothing was wrong with my unit, that she was able to program a whole bunch of port forwarding rules. When I asked her what browser did she use - the answer was MSIE! I brought it back and using MSIE I found that the config pages play much better with MSIE than Firefox - wierd. Anyone else experienced similar behavior with DLink 502t? -- Arun Khan Linux is like a wigwam - no gates, no windows, apache inside

Hi people, Remember my harddisk problem? Well, the drive finally died yesterday. My router is currently down and that is creating a lot of problems for me. I need a second hand harddisk - 1G/2G/4G/6G/10G....anything will do. I will be paying out of my pocket money so if you're price is too high then I may not be able to afford it. I am in a dilemma. My Sempron system is heating up quite a bit. I was suggested by my vendor to replace the thermal pad but he didn't know which one is good as none of his customers have ever demanded one. I wonder which one is better - pad / grease? I couldn't find AMD recommended thermal pads / greases. Also, I don't know which thermal pads / greases do we get in Mumbai. Can someone tell me where could I get these thermal pads / greases and which company do you recommend? -- Dinesh A. Joshi

is the mtnl broadband/triband any good? I am considering it as a secondary connection to use.. for night usage. Is there a way to program the router to automatically log me off? like time based managment? I am considering the 590 plan with night unlimited. Any idea of the service of mtnl in delhi, i told one of my friends companies to consider it as a secondary connection to their existing airtel connection. Satish

Hello, I am trying to install GTK2.6 and while installing one of the dependencies - Pango 1.8.2 - I encountered some problems: I have posted the details in the gtk-list mailing list http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-list/2005-August/msg00149.html Now while running the configure script I have noticed something weird. pkg-config is used to find packages already installed. I have installed a utility - fontconfig-2.3.2 - in /usr/local/lib and the .pc file resides in /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig I have set the environment variable PKG_CONFIG_PATH to /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig With this setting, when I issue the command: pkg-config --modverion fontconfig it returns 2.3.2, which is correct Now the problem: When I run the configure script for Pango-1.8.2 it cheks for fontconfig and returns version number 1.0.1 which is not correct. After digging I found an older installation of fontconfig in /usr/lib and the corresponding .pc file in /usr/lib/pkgconfig This older version is 1.0.1 but I want to use the newer 2.3.2 version (in /usr/local/lib). I don't understand why the configure script finds the older version and not the new one even after the environment variable PKG_CONFIG_PATH is properly set. I am also running the configure script with --prefix=/usr/local Digging deeper, I noticed that even xft anf Glib libraries are showing the wrong older version in the configure script. Hello, With reference to my earlier message: I just checked the configure script in detail and I realised my interpretation was wrong. Sorry about that. Nice learning experience though. The configure script checks for fontconfig version 'greater than' 1.0.1, which exists and is proper. Same thing with xft and Glib. All proper. However, I still am not able to install pango. Getting Connected to Internet :(

Hello Friends, Its again me the great old problem child... Now landing here with old problem...in a different way... Im not able to connect Red Hat Linux 9 to internet..Im using Sify broadband ...I have already asked abt this issue in a previous mail..Where in i din't know a bit abt Linux..So friends in here helped me out abt saying how to do it using "neat" command.. I used this command and i have specified my static IP,Gateway,my prefd DNS and alternate DNS also....The state of my connection shows active :( but im not able to even ping the local gateway...also since im not able to ping the local gateway im not also able to use the sify BB client to connect to internet... I tried it whole of last nite didnt work at all :( don't know where im going wrong... please do guide me ...Im not sure...I think i mite get some yellings coz im posting the same issue again...But its ok..I can learn things :) Thanks in advance.. eth1 showing as dev609

hi, i have this small problem. i have 2 NIC (eth0 and eth1) one of the cards suddendly fried. so we got it replaced. but now if i do ifconfig instead of regulare eth0 and eth1, it shows dev609 and eth0. actually it works, but just feels different to call your NIC something like dev609. anyone know how do i revert back to eth1 as it used to be? -- Life is complex. It consists of real and imaginary parts.

Fresher needs help!!

Hi Linuxers, I have done my B.E in computers and am looking for a job.However my problem is that all the jobs opening out there are for .NET / SAP / ERP / Visual Crap etc etc. I did not find a single opening (for fresher) in systems programming (c/c++ in *nix, device driver etc) My friends say its foolish of me looking for such a job and that i must take whatever job i get . But my concern is if i take any SAP/.NET etc job what are my chances of switching to a systems job (which is what i want to do ultimately) I have done many hobby projects in linux.Right now im studying "Advanced programming in unix environment" by Richards. But i feel all this is gonna get wasted if i dont get a "good" job. Issue with python pexpect

Hello friends. I am facing a problem with pexpect(python expect). I want to take config of a router to a file. But when accessing the router configuration it comes at a prompt More and where the user has to press the spacebar key.My script presses the space bar key automatically but this process works only 5-7 times after that it comes and stops at the More prompt. MRTG Problem

Hi all, I am trying to configure mrtg, i had succedded in doing the half way, but while trying to generate the graphs using indexmaker i land up with error. # indexmaker --output /var/www/mrtg/test.html /etc/mrtg/mrtg.cfg After executing this command i get this error. I have seen SCSI disks appear and disappear on HBA scans - when they appeared they worked fine but ... they eventually RIP'd. For this reason It is. And some of it is patented to boot. Staroffice (i dont remember the company name) paid top dollars to get the formats and use as they please. Sun purchased Staroffice and split it into staroffice (closed) and openoffice (gpld afaik). They did that as a strategy for their javadesktop and to hit M$. Staroffice has several "features" enabling it to read M$ files better than Oo - at least according to reviews. Linux router tends to crash and burn...

Hi, my debian router tends to do just that after a while of operation. The problem is basically it gives some harddisk related errors. But the harddisk checks out fine. I just need to format and reinstall debian and everything starts working fine. The hardware is quite old. It's a P1 166MHz, 1GB Seagate HD, 64MB RAM. Help is appreciated. Regards. -- Dinesh A. Joshi

Problem with two NICs

Hello guys, I am using FC4 x86_64. I have two LAN cards for two internet connections. One of them is the onboard NVIDIA chipset card. The other one is a Davicom Semiconductor 8139 card. The problem I am facing is that, in my Network Connections under Gnome, I see my NVIDIA card as eth0(forcedeth) which seems to be fine, but for the Davicom card I get an eth0 as well as another network device which is also detected as the same LAN card with a device number that changes every time I reboot my system. The eth1 which should be working fine is not and the other device which is detected works fine. Now, the problem is that I have to change the primary internet connection in Firestarter(firewall) every time I reboot my system. That wouldn't be so bad, if it was a one time purchase (can think of lots of parallels from other industry sectors), but it isn't - one has to go on and on buying expensive upgrades, often getting pointless or irrelevant feature creep without any added value. What can one do about it? Make a noise, what else? Don't sit quiet waiting for some half knowledgeable journalist to educate others, especially those in a position to influence policy change. Maybe this list isn't the right place to take up this activity, but there ought to be others - on an all India basis, not just for Mumbaikars. Does anyone know of one? If not, then how can we pool resources to start such a list? Would it be OT to discuss this here till it reaches a take-off (or aborted) stage? -- Vickram

Linux Mail Client - Threads like GMail

Is anyone aware of a Linux mail client that allows one to view the message threads like it is viewed in the web-based gmail account?? Basically view all the threads in one page. Of the mail clients i use - Thunderbird and Kontact - the threads are listed and one has to go to each thread to view its content. -sg

Gyach stuck behind proxy

anybody used Gyach (yahoo voice chat client for linux) sucessfully? when i try to connect i get this error Could not connect to Yahoo! Error connecting via proxy. Proxy replied: 'HTTP/1.0 403 Forbidden' but i can connect to yahoo messenger service with the default yahoo client for linux. i have no clue why its happening? google also didn't help :( -- Life is complex. It consists of real and imaginary parts.

hi, i have machines here with 2 ethernet cards each. the card that is inseted in the PCI Exp. slot always detected as eth0 and the one onboard eth1 except on the machine where i have 3 NICs. there the onboard gets eth0, PCI exp. NIC as eth1 and the last one inserted in normal PCI slot as eth2. how does OS decides which card to call eth0 or so on? -- Life is complex. It consists of real and imaginary parts.
