hi, i downloaded acrobat reader the linux version from the adobe site. the link is http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html now while installing as written in the install document i untar the file and the tried to run the install script by ./INSTALL command. but it was not installing . i am not being able to run it. cannot figure out why. please can somebody try this out and tell me. i am doing this on RH 9. thanks a lot........... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? hi fellow linux users , thanks for your reply but no solution has worked yet. this mail is sum up most of your question you asked me. hope this can help you solve my problem. i downloaded acrobat reader from this link (linux version) http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html i untared the file. read the doument on installation. it said to run the INSTALL command. but when i did that it gave an error. Morning Guys/Gals, Me has an urgent need of advice from your end. Hoping for some pointers. For one of TCS's client we have configured Nagios and a host of other GPL'ed applns top aid him in Network Monitoring as part of a very large project. This last problem has me stumped. In my network consisting of purely AIX/Gnu-Linux/HP-UX i have to provide a single console for monitoring all logs and trigger an alert/alarm as soon as a particular message comes up in the logs. These logs will be both system and application logs and hence the messages to be tracked has to be customisable. Lemme know if someone has had this problem solved before or has any inkling of what appln we can make use of. RAM Testing

Dear Luggers, This is on topic. Has anyone developed a bootable floppy that only does the function of testing the RAM to simulate optimum operation conditions and give results if the RAM is good or bad. The problems with some RAMs is that they pass the bios test but make the system hang before starting the OS completely. It wastes a lot of time of the engineer to locate the problem as it could be due to a bad HDD, IDE cable or corrupted system files or RAM. Replacing the RAM is the only option available for testing it. The benchmarking programs that are available are platform dependent and need an OS to be loaded. If such a bootable floppy was available to test the RAM in full simulated operation then this would be very handy. Since the bios has drivers for the keyboard and floppy, no other drivers would be really needed and only the small RAM testing program would be needed on the bootable floppy. In future we can have other bootable floppies that test the CPU, motherboard and other devices *without loading any OS*. It would make life easier for the engineer. Regards, Rony.

[OT] My PC won't start...Please help!

Hi Linuxers, I've got this problem with my PC, it just refuses to start. The problem started a couple of days back. I was working on it and suddenly the entire system went off. I tried restarting, checked all the connections & cables. When I switch on the main power and press the power button on the cabinet, nothing happens. The motherboard LED comes on and the monitor LED blinks green but no chassis fan, no CPU fan, hard-disk not starting, nothing. System specs : AMD Duron 1.2 GHz ASUS A7N 266 VM mobo 128MB Hynix DDR SDRAM 20 GB Samsung HDD Samsung CDRW DAX LAN Card The SMPS was replaced only a month back. RAM was replaced 2 months ago. Fresh CMOS battery plugged in a week ago. The system is 2.5 years old. Sorry about the OT-ness and length of this post. If anybody could provide any help, I'll be infinitely thankful. hi friends, i have a problem. i have 3 computers with tally on them. now i am putting up a server which is linux. now i want to know if it is possible to move the data of tally onto the server and it still be accesable to the server. and a forthmachine will be added with a tally client(windows) to again view the data of tally. the server will have rh 9 . samba and mail server. another server will be added which will conatin firewall and proxy. now tell me if the tally thing is possible and how should it be done. especially if anybody has donethis in their company. thankx. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi all, Actually I had framed the question wrong in a jiffy.........thank you for the answers.. The problem i have observed with most of the mail servers in a corporate network is that there seems to be no authentication on the relay mail server........ I have observed that although the servers in the internal network of a corporate org have proper SMTP auth means, the relays or gateways for external mail delivery do not seem to authenticate the user. On such n/w's I'am able to send mail from xyz(a)copstop.com to abc(a)copstop.com using low level SMTP chat from home by telnet to port 25 to one of copstop.com's relay servers facing the internet. Where'as i'am not either of the two. The mail received by abc looks original but shows from : xyz(a)copstop.com to: <> undisclosed recipients in the header and logs. Is there a way out where I can stop mail from: xyz(a)copstop.com only when the relay server is accepting mails from other servers.(incoming) The gateway is using sendmail as an MTA. I would be happy to give any clarifications needed. As far as usage is concerned clicking mouse buttons hardly requires any training Well one 55++ yr old newbie to computers did require training on moving the mouse and took to GNU/Linux like a pro. Switch on and the browser opens onto some cricket site. Kmail opens up and downloads mails. Xmms starts playing some bhajans etc. etc. He wonders what are computer viruses and why everbody in his office are in such a state of terminal anxiety every few weeks. rgds jtd

Dear Luggers, This is off topic. The recent fire at Sion had 3 casualties. A woman and her child took refuge in a lift to escape from the fire and reach the ground floor. However, just at that time, the building's power was switched off for safety and the two got trapped inside, inhaled poisonous gases and expired. To prevent such tragedies from happenning, lift manufacturers could provide a mechanical crank inside the lift to let the occupants slowly bring the lift up or down to a safe floor. If the doors are the automatic type, then a mechanical arrangement to open the door in case of an emerrgency. As a safety measure, the door will open only when the lift has aligned with any available floor. If you know people in this profession, please pass on this message to them. Regards, Rony.

While installing scribus on BSD I am getting the following error on 'GNUMAKE=gmake ./configure' : configure: error: You need at least freetype 2.1.0 I have installed both freetype-1.3.1 and freetype-2.1.9 from source. 2 cpus instead of one

Hi, I have a few linux servers which in /proc/cpuinfo shows the number of cpu's, on some servers, however I have only one cpu but top and /proc/cpuinfo show's two. Any idea why does it show like this and what is a correct way for analysing how many CPU's are present on the system. Does this happen on only certain hardware, as I have noticed this on my SuperMicro and HP servers only. Thanks in advance... Regards, Keith

JBL Pro speakers [ really very good ] Have used SuSE Pro 9.1 and SLES 9 x86_64 and works amazingly well. only problem is the modem which is not very important and havent tried much. explanation of named stats

Hi, Can anyone point me to where I can get an explanation of the named statistics on the internet. I couldnt find much. The reason being in my stats, the failuers are showing 8483727, is that normal. People are not complaing about my DNS, and my Name server is running fine. inode problem

Hi, I have a mailing application running on RedHat 7.3, Every couple of months we have a problem with the inodes getting used up on the /var partition. There is a lot of space on the partition, However the inodes are used up by a lot of 0 byte files by this application. I just wanted to ask the gurus in the list, if anyone came across this problem and how they went about trying to solve it. I had to find out the 0 byte files in /var and then deleted the 0 byte files. Thanks.. Regards, Keith

Wanted: Tutor for UNIX and PERL/PYTHON in South Bombay I must learn to use UNIX and to program in PERL/PYTHON -- my firm (a US bank) has some critical stuff on that configuration that I need to be able to manage. I have mild programming skills to fall back upon (although I am way out of touch with syntax, etc. and my regular job is that of a financial analyst). Ideally I would like to do this either over a few full-day sessions or part time over two weeks. I would be obliged if any of you can help, or can point me to someone who can.
