I think a few days back someone on the list requested for help on motorola sm6 modem driver. Incidentally i came across this site, http://www.angelfire.com/linux/sm56/ where the user simply deleted a line in the kernel module source, recompiled and got the modem to work under Mandrake. Hi Group, I have implemented message queue to communicate between two processes. Message queue is created by using IPC-wait. An XP-Com component running JavaScript and main application. The main application waits till some message is put by the Java Script application in the message queue. At this stage, if GDB is used for debugging, the application hangs. What is the workaround for this? I need to use fprint for each line to debug, which is quite tiring. Regards, Ramachandra

In 2 gb HD .I had installed debian linux in 900 mb partition and lilo in "MBR" .After that I have installed RedHat in another 900 mb partition ,while installing redhat I have not installed lilo neither in mbr nor in first sector of partition Now there are 2 partition each of 900 mb .1 which has debian and another which has redhat .Now I have to configure lilo to boot both debian and redhat since redhat partition doesn't have lilo installed on it .so I am not able to boot redhat. Regarding this I have gone through the How to's also .but no way

thank you for all your replies, which were really sent so very promptly. that shows the enthusiasm that linuxers have for helping each other with their problems. unfortunately, the problem wasn't solved. it is still giving the same error: emacs: error in loading shared libraries: libXaw3d.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory i think there is some problem with the shared libraries. it would be great if anyone of you could point it out, so that i could tell my sysadmin to do the needful thanks for all the co-operation and support linuxers rule!

hi, if it's not the wrong location of the fs.h file (i really doubt it is) ... then try this ... since the compiler is saying "dereferencing pointer to incomplete type" ... maybe it is that the struct u r passing to the function is not properly initialized ... like if the struct object u r passing to the function has been just intialized as struct buffer_head *structobbject; then structobject is not initialized ... try structobject = new buffer_head[1]; then u can pass structobject to ur function and use map->b_data within the function... this may work .. try it ... if this doesn't .. post again .. i'll think of something else. dinesh. - Perfection or Nothing.

Dear all, We've just witnessed a debate about allowing /banning HTML mail. I received (or didn't receive, choose whatever you want) such a mail from ILUG Delhi, which highlights the problem of banning such mail. One member, Tarun Upadhyay, has done some hard work to create a table listing software available commercially and in open source, and has tried to start a discussion. His table, when sent in HTML, got blocked because ILUG Delhi blocks all attachments. When he sent it as in-line plain text, you can see what came through. I can't read head or tail of it because of the line wrapping, and I don't have time to manually re-format it just to read it. Tarun is probably going to try putting it up on some Website. Not all of us list members have access to such Websites, and the ILUG groups don't seem to provide this sort of Vault as a service to its members. (ILUG Delhi certainly doesn't seem to.) And if I were in his place, I wouldn't have taken the trouble to find a Website in this case; this table covers a subject fundamental enough for me to want to send it to all list members by email. I asked Tarun, by direct email, to send me the table as an HTML attachment. He did. My purpose was served. Is this a scalable model? If a hundred members of ILUGD (they have many hundred) had asked individually, should I expect that he'll oblige all of them? Who loses and who wins in this case? I'd say the whole mailing list loses, because no discussion really happens, and Tarun Upadhyay's work "goes waste" in a sense. As it is, we know how rare it is for any member of any list to create any original content and submit it to the list. What would you suggest we should do in situations like this? My suggestion: all emails submitted with attachments should be forwarded with moderator approval (if Mailman permits such a filtering); It should not blindly be stripped of attachments. The messages have to be related to propogating, using, trouble-shooting, bug-fixing, of GNU/Linux operating system. Feature comparision of other operating systems and distributions is allowed, but restrain from BASHING. GNU/Linux is possibly the most friendly operating system, and hence as users of the OS let us all maintain a FRIENDLY tone to our conversations on the list. YOU are the best judge to determine the relevance or irrelevance of your post to GNU/Linux, and therefore you are responsible for your postings. Since this is not a moderated list, please read the guidelines before posting mails to the list. The sole functioning of this list is based on the self disciplinary nature of its users. ILUG-Bom Mailing List participation Guidelines 1. Keep paragraphs and messages short and to the point. See that what you are writing is useful to the mailing list. If not, send it as a private message to the person. (Note that by default the mails go to the LIST) Please change the sender address appropriately before sending a personal mail. 2. When quoting another person, edit out whatever isn't directly applicable to your reply. Don't let your mailing software automatically quote the entire body of messages you are replying to when it's not necessary. Take the time to edit any quotations down to the minimum necessary to provide context for your reply. Acronyms can be used to abbreviate when possible, however messages that are filled with acronyms can be confusing and annoying to the reader. Please provide URL's to articles wherever possible. Avoid cutting and pasting whole articles especially considering the fact that all may not be interested. In any case your posting may not be more than 7k. Occassionally if you may have to send such a mail, post it, it will reach the members after the list admin approves it. 12. When using the mailing list for commercial purpose, please prefix the subject line with "COMMERCIAL". 13. Please *read all your mails before replying* to a mail. Someone may have already answered it. 14. Remember that most of the people are paying by the minute for their internet access. Some pay per byte. Hence please do not waste bandwidth. Ensure your posts are in plain text only. Do not post html mails, or include attachments. Restrict signatures to not more than 4 lines of 72 column text. Votes were taken on whether to block non-text messages or not. 740 subscribers. About 30 participated in the vote 18 - for 9 - against 3 - i cannot figure out what they said There was also 1 vote for Digests being MIMEd. One common request from all camps was that html mails/senders of these mails should not be blocked completely, but if possible should be converted to text and sent forward. If it is blocked, then the user should be notified about why it was blocked and how he can fix it. Admin's decision: filter content. primarily text/plain will be allowed through. signed mails will also be allowed. text/html will be converted to text/plain. Other attachments will be stripped. Messages will be dropped if there is nothing left in them after filtering (eg, someone sends html mail that has no content). -- List Admin

Blocking any attachments is fine, but blocking html to favour plain text would be like buying a new computer just because your operating system doesn't support it. Why can't there be html support into procmail, mutt, etc (lynx code could provide a hint)? We're trying to get people interested in GNU/Linux, not to tell them "You are welcome, but only on our conditions. Don't use html mailing. Don't call GNU/Linux as Linux (boy do we have flame fests on that one)....". All I heard from the mutt and procmail users here is "change mailing list policies for us because our systems don't like them". Why doesn't anyone come forward and say "lets start a mini project to incorporate html support into procmail/mutt". The whole concept of GNU/Linux being a geeks OS only is being stressed here by saying "you gotta learn alternate (probably dificult for some) ways to express yourself by using your imagination. If you're not good enough then Linux is not for you.. go to your sucky windows". Ban html messages and lose the initiative on getting newbies into the GLUG. Getting warning messages the first time doesn't exactly seem to be a welcoming sign for any newbie probably struggling to install the OS on his system. Let it remain an elitist group then. problem starting emacs

i connect to a gnu/linux server through telnet. on the server, emacs is installed, but X is not. when i try to start emacs, it gives the foll error (i guess this is because emacs is trying to start X). emacs: error in loading shared libraries: libXaw3d.so.7: cannot open shared obje ct file: No such file or directory is there any way to start emacs in the non-gui mode (i know this can be done, but don't know how to do it). at my home, if i open emacs in the prompt mode (with the X stopped), it opens automatically in the non-gui mode. the server is managed by a sysadmin. do i need to tell him to do something, or can it be done if i add something in my ".bashrc" or ".emacsrc" files? i would be thankful if anyone could suggest some way to do it.

Hi Philip Thanks a lot for your reply. This changeLog and RELEASE_NOTES idea sound good. So when you have to release a module you need to edit these files to reflect your projects capibiliteis etc. Am I right? There's one more thing I wanted to ask. I can update my module or file to a tag or a date in YYYY-MM-DD format. But how can I update a file to a older revision which is not tagged. For example. Today I make 3 commits for a file. and only the first and last are tagged so say the file has revisions 1.1 1.2 and 1.3 Now I can update to 1.1 and 1.3 since they are tagged. How do I update to 1.2 ? Hi all I intend to buy a Pocket PC (Toshiba e335 or something ) that runs Windows Mobile 2003. I have seen ppl using opie on ipaq and zaurus . has anyone tried / tested / knows anyone who has tried OPIE or any gnu/linux env on a toshiba ? Any pointers shall be helpful. have tried google not much luck. plz dont recommend me other handhelds as cost is a concern. Thanks Harsh

Yes I think only text/plain, text/html and also message/rfc822(and sub text parts) should be allowed. Because attachments if any can be posted in form of links. I am asking to allow text/html because Yahoo/Hotmail/MSOE, the most used e-mail clients offer rich text compose feature, and its tendency of people to use it, and probably its on by default and non-technical/newbie sender may not know how to disable it. OR if we block text/html then he/she should automatically informed(atleast 1 or 2 times) that his/her message was blocked, for it is not text/plain. But I dont know if that can be done with mailman.
