Dear Linuxers, We have Red Hat 9 Personnel Edition. We install Custom-Everything onto the Desktops requiring DB2. Previously we installed DB2 Version 7.1 on Red Hat Linux 7.2. For us Installing Db2 same version onto Red Hat 9 is first time. It installs all the components. But the last before successful completion, it should creates a DB2 Instance. tcpdump and iptables

I am using iptables on my system. It is very basic setup that denies all outside connections. When an outside connection is attempted, the packet is dropped and logged into the syslog. When I run tcpdump on the same interface, I do see a lot of ARP requests and bootps/bootpc (UDP) requests. Why are these attempts not logged into syslog? Is it because ARP requests are a lower level protocol? Help me in uninstalling RPMS in red hat 8.0

Hi Friends, Being working with linux for some days. i upgraded my system (p!!! 500mhz , 810 motherboard , 256 mb ram ) with red hat 8.0, now i was doing some r&d, installing squid, appache etc i tryed uninstaling squid by tying #rpm -e squid*.* but it said squid not installed. Also when i run xmms, after hitting the play button it tells me to add files but the files dont get added in the play list i also cannot downgrade this xmms version. please help, And thanks for ur responces. Hi, I am new to NNTPCache server. The compilation and installation went fine but I am having little trouble understanding the configuration. Dear Pankaj, My system developed exactly the same problem when I installed Redhat 9.0. The LoadModule fails for various modules. When I further analyzed the problem, I realized that the files containing these modules were getting erased. Then, it hit me: The filesystem was corrupted. This was further evident when I went into the directories containing the X Windows Files- doing a grep there elicited I/O errors. I tried replacing them, but it didn't work. And no, an fsck didn't help either. All this inspite of the fact that I was using a _very_ new hardisk. I dont think its the harddisk (it'd better not be- there are some vendor necks that might get badly wrung if it is so) I have been using Redhat Distros right frm 6.x. But none of them have given me such probs. How old is your hard-disk? Anyway, for the present, if you want to proceed with your trial, use Redhat 8.0 instead of 9.0, and see what happens. The Debian distros seem to be better, but since you guys might end up using Linux for commercial purposes (as opposed to hobby purposes,) I'd suggest you carry on with Redhat (though admittedly, there might be an issue with RH 9.0). In the meanwhile, I'll fish around and get in touch with other users on this and other GLUGs, and on IRC hangouts, and see if any folks have this kind of a prob. If yes, I'll package an error report and send it to out. Other Gluggers- any comments? Have I missed out something in my line of thinking? And yes- anybody with screwed up file systems on RH 9.0? Those who follow security will find the following amusing: An anonymous person has again posted vulnerability information gleaned from the Computer Emergency Response Center (CERT) approximately 10 days in advance of CERT's intended release of information to the public. The vulnerability involves Adobe PDF files; the files might be able to execute arbitrary commands on a system viewing a PDF file that contains malicious hyperlinks. In past months, the anonymous poster who goes by the alias "Hack4life," has somehow managed to obtain private information from CERT without the company's knowledge and subsequently disclosed that information to the public before vendors were ready to do so. CERT works with vendors who experience security problems to coordinate patch and information release. The anonymous person's antics undermine that process. Hello, I am slowly (very) getting to understand the fvwm2 configuration. My desktop is slowly looking the way I would like it to look like. The only thing missing is the wallpaper. I am using Gnome 2 on Slackware 9 with fvwm 2.4.16. I tried to set a wall paper using GThumb and that did not work. How do I setup a wallpaper when fvwm session begins? fvwm and Mozilla

Hello again, It is about fvwm again. When I open some applications (particularly Mozilla, Netscape, GThumb) my wallpaper and the application do change into some psychdelic backgrounds. Each time the mouse focus moves from the application to the desktop or vice versa, the colors get swapped. I do not have any problems apps such as Acrobat or OpenOffice etc. They are working fine. Has anyone seen this behaviour before? How do I fix these color changes in display? Kernel Compilation Blues

Hi, I am trying to install the new kernel 2.5.70, from kernel.org I compiled the kernel and the modules and installed it using make install. I installed the modules too using make modules_install. However after making the necessary changes to lilo and rebooting, I could not boot into the new kernel. The comp says "Uncompressing Linux..... ok" and hangs. No messages further. no error message... nothing. I tried it with initrd (and necessary changes to lilo.conf) using mkinitrd but even that does not work. Where am I going wrong? What modules will be required in the initrd files? I used only ext2 and ext3. -- Goldwyn :o) Windows 95 never has bugs. It just develops random features.

The panel discussion will feature the following speakers: ASHISH RAJADHYAKSHA is Senior Fellow of the Centre for the Study of Culture & Society (CSCS), Bangalore (http://www.cscsban.org), and was the editor of the Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema (1999). He is an active member of the editorial collective of the Journal of Arts and Ideas, and is a regular contributor to Framework and to Sight & Sound. He has written the book Ritwik Ghatak: A Return to the Epic (1983), was Editor, The Sad and Glad of Kishore Kumar (Research Centre for Cinema Studies, 1988); was Editor, with Amrit Gangar, of Ghatak : Arguments/Stories (Screen Unit/Research Centre for Cinema Studies, 1987). He is currently coordinating the CSCS Media Archive (http://www.cscsban.org/html/media_archive.htm). He was co-curator, with Geeta Kapur, of the exhibition Bombay/Mumbai 1992-2001, part of the exhibition Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis, at the Tate Modern, London, 2001. C.S. LAKSHMI is the Founding Trustee and Director of SPARROW (Sound and Picture Archives for Research on Women), Mumbai (http://www.sparrrowonline.org). She writes fiction in Tamil under the pseudonym Ambai, and her translated stories have been published in a collection called A Purple Sea (Manas, 1997). She has been a researcher in women's studies for thirty years, and has authored The Singer and the Song: Conversations with Women Musicians (Kali for Women, 2000), the first in a three-volume oral history series called Seven Seas and Seven Mountains, with detailed interviews with fifty notable women in the arts in India. She is also the author of The Face Behind the Mask: Women in Tamil Literature (Stosius/Advent Books, 1984). MADHUSHREE DATTA has been making non-fiction and documentary films since 1993. Her first film was "I Live in Behrampada" (1993), on the Bombay riots in 1992-1993. She has since made eight films on diverse themes such as performance and female impersonation in "Sundari: An Actor Prepares", on visual cultures in "Made in India", on young girls growing up in "Memories of Fear", on the 12th century bhakti poet Mahadevi Akka in "Scribbles on Akka", and on sexuality and girl trafficking in "Ailo Bailo Sailo". She has written extensively on the politics of facts, and is presently working on a multi-part film on the mega-metropolis of Mumbai. Problem regarding Ejection of KNOPPIX Cd

First of all if any body is interested in GNU/Linux eduation for schools mail me. I have talked in Redhat about this , they have given positive response. Our group (north mumbai) had send some queries to redhat director, Mr.Javed Tapia, he has answered to the following questions : 1) What initiatives has Red Hat taken for Linux in India ? Ans: Red Hat has been at the forefront of evangelising the use of Open source & Linux in India.It has been working closely with the Government and the corporate sector towards educating them on the benefits of adopting the Linux as their platformvfor deploying Corporate applications. Simultaneosuly, keeping the home user in mind, it also launched extremely user friendly Linux Distributions of the likes of Red Hat Linux 8.0 last year and Red Hat Linux 9 this month. Corporates world over can now use Open Source in the form of Linux in all areas of Enterprise computing. Red Hat has launched a family of products for the enterprise called "Red Hat Enterprise Linux". For any technology to succeed, an ecosystem requires to be created to nuture the technology and help it mature. Red Hat has been working extremely hard in ensuring this..by getting its Enterprise Products certifed by OEMs, and have ISV's develop their range of applications on Red Hat Linux. By training people and helping them obtain Red Hat Certficiation, partnering with professional technology and IT training companies all across India and helping Governments & schools go open source Red Hat has helped in its own small ways take Linux to the Enterprise. 2) Is RedHat using Indian techie skills sufficiently? How? Ans: Red Hat's policy is to grow from with skill sets internally and over time grow in numbers with growth in business oppurtunities. Red Hat does value its employees both Technical and Non-Technical. The average techie at Red Hat is about 25 and comes to Red Hat from various locations across the country. Each employee be it Technical-Non Technical brings in his/her area of specialisation towards helping take the company to greater heights. Their contributions are towards Red Hat's Engineering, Product Development and Professional Consultancy business aspects. Is there any any Linux-related event on the cards from RedHat ? Ans: YEs. those on the anvil we will announce shortly. 4) Is RedHat aware that computing power is still an issue in India (i.e. many of us still use fairly old systems). If so, what attempts are being made to ensure such users are not hit by the heavy demands of recent distros? Ans:At Red Hat we always Endeavor towards delivering the best Open source has to offer. Towards achieving this objective, Red Hat is forced to keep up with the best and latest developments on the Desktop Front. Inspite of the huge processing demands of latest Open Source applications Red Hat makes sure that it has all the options available via its Installer to allow for suitable customisation for any low end x86 box. So you see, after all it just boils down to CHOICE which the user can exercise. 5) Why is RedHat going the bloatware way? Ans: Great question to ask. Bloatware in essence depends on ones point of view. Bloatware applications generally are those which get labelled for hogging huge Disk Space and Memory Resources. As mentioned previously, towards delivering the best and latest in terms of Open Source innovations to the consumer on the desktop; applications and their feature sets galore adding up to the size of the whole distribution. Though over years the final size of the Red Hat consumer Operating Systems have increased dramatically over time, one shouldn't fail to notice the evolution of Linux on the Desktop purely due to the fact the Operating Systems like Red Hat have endeavored towards delivering the Latest and the Best to the customer. Inspite of it all Red Hat is about providing customer the choice towards making an appropriate stripped down selection of packages for his/her machine. 6) What exactly was RedHat's contribution to the Goa Schools Computers Project? Ans: Red Hat provided the OS for all the machines, helped in the installation process and trained about 120 teachers on Linux essentials and use of office tools. 7) How have state governments here reacted to open source softwares ? Ans: The Governments have shown considerable interest to open source and Linux in particular. Recently it was heartening to hear the President of India too give a call to all Indians to go the open source way. In fact, we are currently working with MP Treasuries, Maharashtra Land Records among other projects.There a whole lot of project implementations by DIT for Mantralaya which run on Red Hat Linux. We also recently signed an MOU with NICSI ( the procurement arm of Governments) to develop a mechaniim towards delivering quantifiable services. 8) What has been the response of users to Linux as a business tool ? Ans: Extremely good. Lots of organisations are using open source not only as high cost saving tools but also for better performance. Business users today have a choice and dont need to get locked into one vendor. 9) Why Linux took such a long time to capture market ? Ans: Linux initially did not have any organisation to take responsibily for the software. This was critical for business users. Red Hat helped solved that problem. Also taking on a well entrenched player in any market takes time. An ecosystem also needs to be created which doesnt happen overnight. eg: if u send a spreadsheet created in open office, that receiver needs to be able to read and react. This was not possible till a while back and in some cases even now because of blocking strategies of market leaders. 10) Why should anybody continue using proprietary software? Ans: You tell me! 11) What is your endeavour to spread Free Software/Open Source in schools? Ans: A considerable number of schools have begun to use Linux, both as a network server and internet gateway and router and as a desktop operating system. With the recent enormous growth of interest in Linux this usage is certain to accelerate. Red Hat offers a radical alternative to the way schools have traditionally used computers: an alternative which is attractive in terms of cost, stability, control and security. 12) How many people do you employ in India? Ans: About 30 people. 13) Any plans to make your product more affordable by Indian standards? Ans: Our products are affordable by Indian standards and we will constantly endeavour to offer it at the best possible price. 14) What steps are you taking to bring Linux to home desktops where pirated Windows OS is flourishing? Ans: We are launching desktop OS versions every six months with better applications. We will also launch Red Hat in Hindi down the line. 15) How do you think Microsoft is taking Linux ? Ans: Better answered by them, dont you think?. Linux and its army of developers is something even a company of the likes of Microsoft can hire. dear linuxers, i have a rather antiquated Twinhead Slimnote 712cv laptop with the following config Intel Pentium 120 Mhz 16Mb RAM 1.04Gb HDD Touchpad pointing device 2PCMCIA slots i want to install debian on this system and use it for some basic wordprocessing, mail and stuff like that.. i would also like to use X, maybe with a light window manager like fvwm or flvwm. i've read a document at http://www.angieandthor.de/thor/boxes/endeavour.htm. i want to know if the SLIP based install is feasable using a computer running winXP and apache. i really would like to get this thing working soon so if anybody out there has any ideas about how i can do this any more easily or faster please do tell. gautam. problem plz help

I had linux 9.0 installed and had partioned it automatically during installation. Now due to norton antivirus my mbr was corrupted and i thought by working in rescue mode and doing a 'dd' copy everything would work fine however during booting it directly went to windows without even prompting. By the fdisk of windows i came to know, that i still had the linux partitons but they were showing up as extended dos partitons. By some R&D i came to know that windows had enabled a large disk support by which my mbr was extended to 604 bytes and i think this is where the problem lied. However in rescue mode i came to know that actually my mbr was still 512 bytes. I think this is a bug in the linux rescue. Moreover the rescue mode told me that my windows was /dev/hda1 whereas actually windows fdisk told me it was /dev/hda2. Now neither rescue mode nor installation worked. So i deleted the extended partition and i thought reinstalling 9.0 would solve the problem. But during installation anaconda terminates abrubtly and flashes a error 'received signal 11' i tried to find out what this signal 11 is but to no use. Plz help i need to reinstall 9.0 as fast as possible. thank you Catch all the cricket action. Download Yahoo! Score tracker
