Kmail Trouble

Hi everybody I had some trouble with my previous installation of RH 8.0 so I compleatly took of backup my whole user directory ( exactly tared the whole thing) . After the second installation I put the same directory completly at its place (/home/user). Every setting what I found was intact but there was a trouble with Kmail. I setup Kmail's mail format as Maildir . At first I could see every mail atits place but when I tried to click open it I got blank document and inthe subject field in the list I found the subject field of the accessed mail as "No subject". That means it completly got vanished even after the backup ! Is there any one who can help me out to find some way out of this trouble. Thanking you in advance. experiences with the upcoming kernel 2.6

Hi everybody, Just been testing kernel 2.5.70 on rh 9.0 with reiserfs. One thing's for sure, the final stable 2.6 is going to be a surefire cracker of a kernel. Not only is it fast (no i am stating it subjectively no tests to back it up from my side), but due the pre-emptive kernel feature for desktop along with the interactivity improvements to scheduler, the response is more than snappy. It rocks. Here's a simple "test" i carried out. On my regular kernel i was untarring the kernel tarball and at the same time i tried listening to an mp3 on xmms. Needless to say there was skipping. and even after the untar was complete there was considerable disk thrashing. Step in kernel 2.5.70. Everything works as if its the only thing running around ! The trend for this kernel is to sort of split it as for server and for desktop. You don't need, infact you will hate 2.6 if you use pre-emptive kernel feature for a server environment. However before you jump for www.kernel.org to get a tarball here's a few things that might help you along. 1. do not. i repeat do not select filesystems, ide,scsi options as modules. build them into kernel. The simple reason for this is that there are lots of issues to be ironed out in modules before the stable release. As of now there will be no new features to be added. Its more like a bug-fixing contest right now. 2. before you start whining about unresolved symbols in modules while installing take a look at the modutils available at kernel.org. i forget the link right now. The regular stock modutils do not work with newer kernel. Thats another reason to build the options into the kernel. 3. one thing i haven't got right on my i845glad mobo. alsa sound. Can't get that damned thing to work. And add to my pain every keeps praising it all the more. grrrr. Having said all this please do not blame me for any data / hair loss for any experiments you carry out with that new cracker. How to partition?

Hi, I've been eager to try out Linux for a while, but never could as I just couldnt figure out the partitioning requirements. This is where I've always got stuck & given up a on Linux installation. I've got CDs of Knoppix 3.1, PCQLinux 8.0 & ELX 2.0, but I could never get past the partitioning stage with any of them. Also all published articles on installing these packages barely have a sentence relating to partitioning, which has added to the frustation. To describe my challenge simply, I have Windows C:,D:,E; & F: . F: is 11Gb, & all I want to do is to simply use this space & partition for Linux & Swap. Is that so difficult? Is it possible to get some guidance in simple English on how to do this. I need a "Select this then click on that & then click OK" kind of guidance, such as which Windows has (BTW why is Linux so much harder to install than Windows. Is Windows smarter?)Ooops, *now* I've done it!. Can any one clear the mist for me ? I'm sure no one else has has these questions! Thanks, --Royce.

Problem in display in rh 8.0

Hi, I have installed RH 8.0 on P IV system with 845 Intel chip set mother board. My GUI is not getting configured on same. Like old version of RH in which u have Xconfigurator utility to configure GUI, RH 8.0 is not such type of utility for configuration for same. Problems playing mp3s

Hi, I have mandrake 9 installed and i can listen to cda and wav format files through xmms (or any other player). But for any mpg encoded audio, i don't get error messages, just no sound. For mpg video, there's no sound. For mp3 audio, only the trackbar proceeds; no sound. I do have MPG Layer 1/2/3 plugin on my system, so that probably isn't the problem. mpg version is 1.2.7 (If that should help) Siddhesh.

LAKSHMI and MADHUSHREE DATTA. This Review is the concluding event in the PUKAR Monsoon DOC-SHOP, a five-day workshop for undergraduate students held from 19-23 May 2003 at PUKAR. The panel discussion will feature the following speakers: ASHISH RAJADHYAKSHA is Senior Fellow of the Centre for the Study of Culture & Society (CSCS), Bangalore (http://www.cscsban.org), and was the editor of the Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema (1999). He is an active member of the editorial collective of the Journal of Arts and Ideas, and is a regular contributor to Framework and to Sight & Sound. He has written the book Ritwik Ghatak: A Return to the Epic (1983), was Editor, The Sad and Glad of Kishore Kumar (Research Centre for Cinema Studies, 1988); was Editor, with Amrit Gangar, of Ghatak : Arguments/Stories (Screen Unit/Research Centre for Cinema Studies, 1987). He is currently coordinating the CSCS Media Archive (http://www.cscsban.org/html/media_archive.htm). He was co-curator, with Geeta Kapur, of the exhibition Bombay/Mumbai 1992-2001, part of the exhibition Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis, at the Tate Modern, London, 2001. C.S. Her first film was "I Live in Behrampada" (1993), on the Bombay riots in 1992-1993. She has since made eight films on diverse themes such as performance and female impersonation in "Sundari: An Actor Prepares", on visual cultures in "Made in India", on young girls growing up in "Memories of Fear", on the 12th century bhakti poet Mahadevi Akka in "Scribbles on Akka", and on sexuality and girl trafficking in "Ailo Bailo Sailo". She has written extensively on the politics of facts, and is presently working on a multi-part film on the mega-metropolis of Mumbai. Web Server behind proxy (IPtables problem)

I am preparing a webserver which will work behind a proxy. For this I am using IPtables. The Internal proxy address is 192.168.0.12 The External proxy address is 203.199.111.24 The Webserver address is 192.168.0.14 The code for iptables is given below. My problem is that the website is working when I access it from the internal network despite the fact that there is no DNS for any machines except the proxy. How to ftp through the Proxy.

Hi friends, I have a DSL (DISHNET) connection and I had set up a proxy server (Jana) in the machine which the DSL line is connected. Now for the browsing there is no problem from other machines which are in LAN. This I had done it by re-directing the broswer by puting the IP address of the proxy server. Now I want to do ftp from my machine using ncftp through the proxy server to our web location www.xyz.com from my machine. I want to do command line operations like ncftpget and ncftpput, which had set in crontab. How to configure my machine to do the same. Please guide me. Regrds, Vinod.

New features include: - Webcam support - viewing and broadcasting - Yahoo Chatrooms Improved features: - All calls to connect can now be asynchronous, ie, they can return immediately and make a call to the registered callback function when the connect completes. This will improve response on slow links. (If anyone knows how to do asynchronouse DNS lookups (single-threaded app), please let me know). Also bugfixes and some internal changes. V90 Modems allow 56 Kbps which is 7KBps bps = bits per sec Bps = bytes per sec The browser usually displays speed in bytes per sec which is about 2-5 KBps usually Actual download speed is not a constant and varies with the no of users logged in. So it cant be mentioned. This version seems to be more feature rich particularly for the administrators. During this repairing period all the messages posted were delivered yesterday early morning. (AP) - The SCO Group, which owns key components of the Unix operating system, has sent letters to Linux customers claiming the software is an "unauthorized derivative" of its property. The letters, which were sent earlier this week to companies around the world, warned that commercial users of Linux may face legal liability for using the operating system without a license from SCO. The move follows the filing of a $1 billion lawsuit in March against International Business Machines Corp. for allegedly taking bits of Unix code and transferring them to Linux. IBM dismissed the lawsuit as unfounded. If the latest tactic is successful, it could undermine a tenet of the Linux movement, which has been growing in large part because of the software's very low cost and freedom from the hassles of proprietary software, such as Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)'s Windows. But even if SCO fails to convince Linux users to pay for licenses, it has raised fear, uncertainty and doubt - or "FUD" - about Linux and whether end users can be held liable if other portions are found to be what amounts to stolen property. "When SCO's own UNIX software code is being illegally copied into Linux, we believe we have an obligation to educate commercial users of the potential liability that could rest with them for using such software to run their business," Chris Sontag, a SCO senior vice president, said Wednesday. Lindon, Utah-based SCO acquired control of Unix intellectual property from Novell, which had bought the rights in 1992 from AT&T. AT&T's Bell Laboratories created Unix for minicomputers in the late 1960s and commercialized it in the 1980s. Linux, a Unix derivative first developed in the early 1990s by Finnish college student Linus Torvalds, has in recent years gained in popularity because of its low cost, reliability and ability to run on inexpensive computer hardware. In an e-mail interview Wednesday, Torvalds said he has not heard what components of Linux might be infringing. "I'd dearly love to hear exactly - what - they think is infringing, but they haven't told anybody," he said. "Oh, well. They seem to be more interested in FUD than anything else." SCO also announced it was pulling its own version of Linux, which may be significant because it was distributed under the same license as other versions. That license allows for the free redistribution of the software. "I suspect the current letter is because their lawyers finally noticed that as long as they ship Linux, they are themselves bound by the license under which it ships," Torvalds said. Some observers believe SCO sued IBM in an effort to be bought - a charge SCO denies. SCO's stock price has nearly doubled since it filed the lawsuit, said Bruce Perens, an open-source software advocate and consultant. He said he believes it's a tactic of SCO's investors to recoup their investment. "They don't care who or what they hurt," he said. Darl McBride, SCO's chief executive, said the company is not trying to find a buyer but rather informing users of the problem. He said most Linux distributors leave their customers liable. "Everyone is protected except the users," he said. "We're trying to alert users there are these problems. We're trying to do this in a favorable fashion. ... The hot potato is being passed. We're trying to keep them from being burned."
