How to keep two version of linux on one machine,

Hi Group, I am planning to use some applications which works only on top of red hat linux 6.2. Is it possible for me to keep red hat linux 8.0 and 6.2 on the same machine? Hotmail in Linux ?

Hi Guys, I would like to know if any of you are able to synchronize your hotmail account from Red Hat Linux 8.0. Which program should I use to do that ? Hotmail uses http protocol. Greetings, Dr. D. B. Phatak wants to create an offline internet. It will be a collection of sites which are of importance. This is for the schools and colleges that do not have internet access. The sites will be included on a CD, and can be installed on the HDD of the servers. Dr. D. B. Phatak wants many people to work on this, and we probably have the people to help for this cause. Micros DB access

Hi guys, A little background first. Micros is Point of Sale application for the hotel industry. It runs on Sco Unix among other platforms. According to Micros it uses a proprietary database but we think that it uses some sort of a Unix filesystem. Our problem is getting access to this data as we want it to be available real time for a application we are developing for our client. I have two problems: 1. What are the file systems available on Sco?? [Slightly off-topic] 2. How can I make use of Linux to access this machine and data?? Bye, Amol

Confussion in NAS & SAN

Hi all, NAS(Network-Attached storage). SAN(Storage Area Network). I am not understanding the exact difference between the above two technologies. Both provide optimal consolidation, centralized data storage, and efficient file access.Both can provide high data availability and can ensure integrity with redundant components and redundant array of independent disks. Where exactly they will sit?. and what is the architectural design of both? What are the different types of hardwares can support individually. Can any one plz help me regarding this...... We could create a MSDN-like resource for this as well. HOWTOs and man pages and other help under a single searchable index, with some additional assistance pages. Content could be grouped into multiple CD's for newbies, intermediate & advanced users. Things a newbie has problems with (from my own experiences): 1. I don't know if this can be done. 2. I know it can be done, I don't know how. Don't tell me to RTFM. Tell me which FM to R. 3. I don't understand the man pages. 4. Only if there were a one stop solution where I can run a query through all the man pages and HOWTOs and other help, my work would get done a lot faster. Content within the man pages could also be grouped into sections, depending on the level of a user. A newbie probably only needs to know ls, ls -l, ls -a, and the fact that we can also write ls -al. I would like the RMS lecuture that was conducted on the 14th Feb 2003 at VJTI reach as many users as possible and thus to be able to download it from the internet I'm trying to get the size of the file to be fairly tiny at the same time not loose out too much on the quality. Hello all, congratulations on having successfully migrated all these shools to LTSP. This indeed calls for a pat on the back for all who have toiled night and day to achieve the end objective. We certainly should collaborate and strengthen these initiatives all around the country in an effort to take LTSP to schools accross the country. These noble initiatives will in the long run help our schools/colleges may they be rich/poor by reducing huge overheads otherwise incurred by marrying other Closed Source vendors giving abysmally low ROI. building a list of applications

Hi I would like to build a list of Open Source apps which can be used instead of commonly used applications under the Win. The idea is to invite all you folks to contribute to the listing and I shall compile all the contributions and make it available as a PDF or HTML document which can be posted on the LUG website. The reason for building this list is obvious, to showcase the list of 'alternative' available software which will enable small and large scale users to migrate to from 'grey market' stuff etc to Open Source. It will serve as a reference document which can be used by all to provide information about the availability of tons of productivity software in the Open Source arena, and to dispel the fears of open hearted acceptance. Hello ashley....;) good-morning. It inspiring to see the enthusiasm with which you are pushing gnu-linux at the event. Sometime ago i was pushing fn for a event covering all the Technical/Engineering Colleges in and around GOA. An Ellaborate workshop covering various facets of FSF-OS and basic technical/non-technical concepts regarding gnu-linux. Am interested in seeing the same kicked off. Only if you could start the leg work for that.....the Bombay LUG will be glad to have some volunteers participate in the road show all over GOA and surrounding areas. Have a nice day all. Hello Gp, good-evening...:) GP....i have been thinking about the event we just visited at Kolhapur and Dinesh, i am very glad with the way you went about having the Organisers convinced about the Genuiness of FSF-OS thus culminating in having us present our case to the audience. Can i suggest we start talking to Miss. Ambuja again as she is a real formidable force at Shivaji University. We would be really glad to conduct workshops Technical/Non-Technical for the various Engineering Colleges in Shivaji University. A lot of Engineering Colleges are getting more and more interested in the FSF-OS phenomenon and i want to bank on you towards having this movement taken to the maximum colleges in Interior Maharashtra. Please think about the same....i also want the LUGGERS to know about our efforts and suggest possible course of action. Fantastic idea...when do we start out on the same...??. Any vendor wanting to bring all the other vendors under their roof for a start. Hi all I am having a little bit of confussing in raid(Redundant array of Inexpensive disks). The basic idea of RAID was to combine multiple small, inexpensive disk drives into an array of disk drives which yields performance exceeding that of a Single Large Expensive Drive.In Linux how internally it will do?. Regarding conversion of IMAP mailbox to database

Outline of the System and Basic differences between GNU/Linux and MS Windows. (30 Mins). 3. Hardware compatibility and on-line references for checking compatibilities of various hardware. (30 Mins). 4. Introduction to various common Applications (30 Mins). 5. Installation of GNU/Linux, partitioning basics, dual boot etc. (2 Hrs.). 6. Introduction to basic System Administration, CLI, GUI, X, WM, DM etc. (1:30 Hrs.) 7. Basic troubleshooting principles and guidelines. (Reading log files etc.) (30 Mins). My commentary on GNUnify

I recently had the opportunity to be at GNUnify - a Free software festival. The guest of honour was the GNU man himself - RMS. I was present on Sunday the 16th February where most of the invited talks were held. There have been other reports on GNUnify, so I'll concentrate only on the Mumbai GLUG's contribution. Names may have been changed, no disrespect is meant by this. The day started out with Dr. Nagnurjuna telling us why we should use Free Software, and dispelling some of the myths that have been spread by persons with other agendas. His contention that changing from our current operating system to GNU is no different from the changes that we have to make every two years to start using a new version of that OS is sound. Nagarjuna tends to flavour his lectures with a lot of humour and it was quite engaging that day. Especially funny was his comment about changing word processors: "We changed from WordStar to another word processor called Word Perfect, and then to another word processor called Word, and then to another word processor called Word, and then to another word processor called Word...". I overheard RMS commend him on this point too. Nag also had a three stage IQ test during his presentation. In the first case he asked the audience if they knew who was responsible for certain inventions/discoveries in science. He next asked people if they knew who had written certain Free Software projects (linux, emacs, gcc, perl, python), and finally who had written certain Proprietary products. Everyone got the first two correct. Later in the day Prof. Jeetendra Shah - or should we call him Freetendra Shahftware? - delivered a talk on the use of Free Software in education. He spoke primarily about research done by Seymour Papert in the use of computers to enable education. This is different from using computers to teach children. While the latter uses the computer to program children, the former lets the children learn by programming a computer. The talk was particularly interesting for me because it deals with my area of research. He spoke about how Free Software could help us achieve this goal, primarily by building different scenarios for people from different backgrounds. He also demonstrated Freeduc and distributed 25 CDs of the same. He suggests that every school should have one of these CDs. Jeetendra Shah was quite active throughout the day urging people to come forward and support other projects too, like IndLinux. The final attraction was RMS' speech. Nagarjuna introduced him, although it sounded more like he was reading out his own death warrant. He said RMS was not a person, and then followed it up by saying he's history. At that point RMS was ready to strangle Nag, if it weren't for the large number of people watching. There were several Mumbai Gluggers in Pune over the weekend. I'm told Nirav gave a lecture on PHP on Saturday. I wasn't present for that. I also met Gurpreet Singh - who's been on the receiving end of my list policing on more than one occassion. He made some insightful comments during Prof. Shah's presentation. He's requested me to post the usenet etiquette here, so I'm going to do it for the last time ever. A 4-day course on Artificial Neural Networks is being held at NCST, Kharghar campus from 10th to 13th March, 2003. The course is open to all those who are interested in the field of neural networks, and assumes no background either in NN or AI.
