Hello Luggers, good-morning. Lemme take this oppurtunity to thank all of you'll for your sustained support which has helped us all through our travels across the length and breadth of this state. I would like to take this oppurtunity to personally thank all of you all who donated CD's which we sold at the the event. Believe me...after the knoppix demo and post the talk Students MOBBED Gurpreet who was selling the cd's. Our 20 Copies(Consisting of GnuwinII+Knopix+IndLinux = 2cds) were sold out in 10 minutes.....and students were clammering for more. We were amazed to see 2nd year Engineering students from Walchand Sangli....develop some real fundu 8085-8086 Simulators with an amazing GUI in Java and have been talking to them on Putting the same into the GPL domain..(Dinesh...pls push them and email calling them to discuss the same with the LUG). Learning our lessons we are looking at offering the same at Gnunify as a 2 cd kit and only charging for the cost of the 2 cd's which we will plough into the event again. On the whole many other Engineering/MCA colleges in the interriors of Maharashtra are opening up to FSF and OS and want such events organised at their campus too. We are looking to build this sustained movement all around Maharashta with the help of these charged Warriors at the local institutes. Looking forward to your unhindered support in the future too. Lot of computing power by mixing many machines and using it for computing. One or more of these could be combined together in a cluster. It would've been good if you searched over the net for these defintions. I have this peculiar problem with g++ under linux. This is a small piece of code that i wrote #include<iostream.h> main() { cout << "blahblah"; } When i try to compile it, i get the following warning In file included from /usr/include/c++/3.2/backward/iostream.h:31, from first.cpp:1: /usr/include/c++/3.2/backward/backward_warning.h:32:2: warning: #warning This file includes at least one deprecated or antiquated header. Please consider using one of the 32 headers found in section 17.4.1.2 of the C++ standard. Examples include substituting the <X> header for the <X.h> header for C++ includes, or <sstream> instead of the deprecated header <strstream.h>. To disable this warning use -Wno-deprecated. To get a warning free compile i commented out the line #include backward_warning from iostream.h When i try to run the executable the shell does a silent return, without printing the blahblah as it is supposed to. I redirected the output to a file, and it contained blahblah. I dont think the problem is with g++, but i cant exactly put my finger on it. Hi folks, Are there users of RH5.0 out there? I am asking this, as I have some systems running RH5.0 (2.0.36) since ages. Of course, I had upgraded sendmail,apache, PHP etc over these years on these boxes, and they are serving me well since their inception. IOW, *they do what they are supposed to do*, leaving nothing much to whine about. They mostly function as mailservers. I dont blame entirely the retro-ness(?) on my laziness, but mostly on the principle "Dont fix it if it is not broken." I saw nothing broke, also my requirement is being met by these machines. However, any new system I build goes with "somewhat decently" recent versions of Linux [ie, RH7.0 (2.2.16-22) or 7.2, even though RH 8.0 is the current cool and hype thing.] I would like to know how you ladies and gentlemen out here treat the versions (if you guys have any) that power my said horses. I suppose one prime plus point of Linux is that it likes older hardware as well. How do we treat the older kernels? Tear 'em down? Thanks for your time and patience in advance, Anu Mathew

Hi, Anyone tried proc filesystem? I tried working with the, procfs example in /usr/src/linux but it shows errors in procfs.h, I am not sure if the example is for the kernel 2.4. I googlized but found same example, is that program have to be modifed to run on kernel 2.4. ThankX in Adv JAI

FREEDUC CD : excellent content, but could not get mouse working

I have the freeduc 1.1 CD which is based on knoppix 3.1Beta created by www.ofset.org . I can boot from the CD. I can access programs with keyboard. However it does not enable my mouse. On the same computers, the knoppix CD works very fine. The collection of educational programs on freeduc CD is REALLY excellent. Can some crack the problem. Dr Siva at OIIT has run the same CD on hois laptop and desktop without any problems and has good opinion of it. If we can confidently run it on ususal machines ( mine are usual ones) , it will be 'killer' ( please suggest a better pro-peace word in these days of war mongering) application for free software. Posters of DOUBLE-A3 size are ready. 1000 of them. I had sent a list of colleges (as in Mumbai University website) where posters for lecture by Stallman are to be put up. I had requested to give me contact numbers for the colleges as I have them only for engg college from admission form. This is to follow up telephonically. This is a request to ensure that posters are put up. Please contact undersigned for reaching posters to you. I am going to appeal to VJTI students to reach them. If you know any student of VJTI who can reach you, s/he can get posters from my lab which is 1st floor, Mech engg deptt. Phone 24151791. Hi, I am working on RH8.0. I configured php and apache, but the post or get are not working. Any data sent by the form is not being received by the php page. It should not be a problem for FSF/GLUG/ILUGBOM since there are non-profit organisations. geting error with horde webmail packag

Dr Stallman is well known to the software field as the pioneer of GNU operating system which is currently popularly used along with LINUX kernel ( hence properly called gnu/linux) . His well known contributions are gcc compilrs, gnu emacs and many other systems which are also available on propritory platforms like MSWindows. Currently when issues of spreading the IT culture in education and e-governance are occupying many minds and new avenues for jobs are being sought, it is natural that students become aware of available alternatives. With this in mind, we have taken this opportunity to invite Dr Stallman for a lecture at VJTI during his tour to India.He has earlier delivered lectures in IIT and TIFR. This is very good as many drives from creative cannot read the 700mb version and crash. Cannot get Pinnacle PCTV Plus (TV Tuner card) to work

Hi list, Problem Description: The card is auto-detected, however I am unable to change channels. More precisely, the last channel that I have viewed in Windows is the one that appears in linux (and no other channels are detected). Details: 1) Redhat 8.0, kernel: 2-4-18.14 2) Selected card = 39 in the bttv CARDLIST file. 3) using xawtv as tv-viewer. 4) dmesg says 'frequency out of range'.(when I try to change channels in xawtv) 5) According to Pinnacle, this is a special indian edition card. I wonder if being "special" is causing problems... :-) I have a sneaky feeling that this version of the bttv driver doesn't come with PAL-BG support (which PCTV PLUS uses). I have no idea whether PAL-BG is supported in the newer versions of the bttv driver. I went to bytesex.org/bttv and checked the CHANGELOG. No luck, no PAL-BG mentioned anywhere. And Yes I have RTFM and done _tons_ of searching on the web. I searched the archives and I found that "Abhir Joshi" of this list had asked this same question in October last year, but got no responses. I will be grateful for _any_ help/tips/pointers. I am desperate, since I am running only Linux on my box now. Thank you, Tarun

Setting font in Evolution

Hello Luggers, Does anybody use Evolution ? I want to change the Font for mail display. But there is no option to change the font settings. for display of mail. There is option to increase the text size, but no option to change the font. Same problem while composing mail. If I compose mail in plain text, I don't have the option to change the Font nor can I change the default font size. I understand that I am composing in plain text so which font I use is of no importance. But the default font size is so small, that while composing mail, it is painful for the eyes. Anyone using evolution has had this problem ? Have I missed out something somewhere ? Rajen.

What's new in Gnome 2.2?

Hi all! Gnome 2.2 is out (it's been over a day now) and it's great to know that two of my major complaints about Metacity (the new window manager) have disappeared. Metacity now supports "stay-on-top" and "stay-below" hints. You can also set your own hotkeys for running commands now (hope it gets that as nicely as sawfish). Most significant improvements have happened in Nautilus, which I can't say much about since I'm more comfortable with the CLI. Other goodies include program start-up notification (no more checking for disk activity to confirm that your mouse-click had some effect), "Open Recent" action like "Start > Documents" All of this sounds great. deleting oversized messages without fetching them

When using fetchmail, how do I delete oversized messages from the server without actually fetching them? The man page of fetchmail doesn't help. Visited the picopeta site after a long time. They actually had something to sell. You still hear the "lowcost" spiel from them off and on. Here is the price. Platinum: 10 Simputers, 20 SmartCards, 10 licenses for proprietary software (pricing: Rs. 190,000 in India, US $4,599 overseas) Gold: 5 Simputers, 10 SmartCards, 5 licenses for proprietary software (pricing: Rs. 98,500 in India, US $2,499 overseas) Silver: 2 Simputers, 5 SmartCards, 2 licenses for proprietary software (pricing: Rs. 49,000 in India, US $1,299 overseas) No mention of prices without the proprietory software. DOSEMU : Execution problem on console mode

I need some help on DOSEMU. I have installed the latest version (released Dec'2002) under RH 8.0 (kernel 2.4.18) and the same is working fine under X. But while switching to non graphics screen and executing the command at the prompt it crashes with the following error : In file included from builtin : 496 Error in : (line 496) parse error 1 error detected while parsing the configuration file.
