Mandrake 9 TTF problems

hello, I am having problems in using TTF fonts in KDE 3 on Mandrake 9. I copied the fonts from my Windows FONTS directory to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF and ran ttmkfdir and restarted XFS. The fonts were then listed, but not usable for some reason. After searching via google I disabled XFS, and put all directories manually in XF86Config. I also deleted XftCache from there. After that, I could use the font selector in XMMS to select and use the fonts without problems. Howver, using KDE Control Center caused all the visible fonts to be garbled, like small squares for TTF fonts. After some hacking around, the fonts for the "general" category displayed properly but for anything eles [eg. Menus, Taskbar, etc] the fonts look garbled yet. This behaviour is sometime intermittent--after restarting X, the general fonts also are garbled. Can anyone help me out? I suspect that KDE is not using correct codepage in the TTF fonts (XMMS has that option). Could it be due to other reasons altogether eg. Xft? Thanks.

help : unknown host error

Hi all I am a new user to GNU/Linux. I have Red Hat Linux 7.2. I tried to configure the my system to access internet. I get connected to the net. I also get a status window indicating the time duration for which i have been online. But I can not open any page in any browser. I tried ping command on shell, even that did not work. I get error as �unknown host�. I have specified my primary and secondary DNS during setup. I tried to access /etc/resolv.conf, but it says it is �read only�. Slightly OT: Linux and Windows working in Harmony

Hi Luggerz, I dont think this is quite as much about Linux as it should be, but nevertheless i thought that Luggers will always be a valuable source of information. So here is the deal. I will be soon be having two computers,a laptop and a desktop(both are relatively good ones). I have 30 gigs of hard-drive space on the laptop which will need to run Windows(for voice conversation with people back home :)), and 80gs on the desktop(which will be linux). These computers will be connected to a common 10/100 Mbps switch. My question is how would i share stuff between both machines i.e in effect, have a common 110 gb space which can be accessed by both machines. I dont mind leaving aside 5gs for each OS, but i still want to share the rest. Keep in mind that i intend to run a ftp server, which is why i want shared space :). Please feel free to answer whatever you feel is worthwhile. I have not been able to make up my mind about anything, as quite franky i dont know enough about networking multi-platform pcs, which is why i am looking for some help. if u feel this is OT then please reply off the list, but please provide me some input. How to make a distro?

Hi Luggers, I am currently in the process of building a custom GNU/Linux system for myself using 'Linux From Scratch' as a reference. How do I make a distribution of my own, complete with a custom installation script. Can anyone suggest some literature which I could download. Yep, I did according to lwq. Created /home/user_name/Maildir for 3 users. using maildirmake /home/user_name/Maildir but i get these problem when i send mail. @400000003dbfc65d02272b9c starting delivery 2: msg 17361 to local darshi@crystal .com @400000003dbfc65d02277da4 status: local 1/10 remote 0/20 @400000003dbfc65d02c3060c delivery 2: deferral: Unable_to_chdir_to_maildir._(#4. 2.1)/ Note: host name is Linux_qmail. But while installing qmail i have mentioned Crystal.com It recives the mail and considers it as local. But it is not delivering to the mailbaox. Note: I have done according lwq. i am not able to find out where i have gone worng. _____________________________________________________________

Hi all problem is sloved. I made a mistake. echo ./Maildir/ > /var/qmail/control/defaultdelivery. I typed these one worng I had typed ./maildir insted of ./Maildir. I checked Defaultdelivery file. It seems the permissions for the maildirs are wrong. Just check if you have installed and configured qmail according to lwq. Hi tahir, The product was launched @ the IBM developerWorks Live! event in Mumbai. Eventually I ended up using the product. The interface looked pretty good and convenient to us ( as told to me by a CA) but I had a lot of trouble installing it due to it's dependencies. It comes bundled with a custom Linux Distro though. Still lots of scope for improvement. Configuring TV Tuner card

Hi all. I have a "Pinnacle PCTV Plus" tv tuner card. I have to pass "card=39" to the bttv module to get it working. The video and the audio work perfectly, but I am not able to change the channels. The "CARDLIST" file in the documentation of linux-2.4.7-10 source doesn't list this card to be supported (I use RHL7.2). But this source is pretty old now. Has anyone tried with the newest bttv driver or has anyone successfully configured this card in some other way? DNS problems.... on dialup

hi again, i am basically having problems connecting to web pages. ! most of the times.. the web page request returns with a unknown host error, i guess thats attributed ot the DNS once the pages load.. and they do load after i try a few times.. mostlly. ! they are preety much OK, so its not a conection of BW or ISP problem it seems. can anyone show me their resolv.conf on a dialup.. how can i maintain my own DNS lookup.. it it will help me with my problem. beleive me its really frustrating! regards rahul

LILO with BeOS

For starters, why don't you try hacking Anaconda or just base your distro on the minimal distribution of Debian. Once you know hoe the stuff works, you could start right from scratch. Beleive me, using Anaconda or the minimal distribution to build your own distro is just as exciting. Report of GNU/Linux workshop at KReSIT, IIT Bombay

Hello all, The Information Technology association, an association of students, faculty and staff of KReSIT had organised a two-day workshop on GNU/Linux on the 26th and 27th of October. The venue was the impressive KReSIT auditorium. The publicity campaign was mainly concentrated inside the IIT campus. In the week before the workshop, posters had been sent to various colleges in Mumbai. The registrations which had been sluggish (and had got quite a few of us worried) picked up in the last 3 days. More than 100 participants had to be turned down. After about 3 weeks of hectic preparations, the big day arrived. The start couldn't have been better. Dr. Nagarjuna gave a fantastic talk on Free Software and the history of GNU/Linux. This was followed by sessions on installation, GUI, command-line and shell programming and programming environment conducted by students at KReSIT. All the slides were created in latex and presented using the pdfscreen package ;-) The entire workshop was recorded and transmitted live to remote centers of the Distance Education Programme being conducted at KReSIT. Enthusiatic people who had turned up on that day were allowed to sit in the local "remote" classroom at KReSIT and watch the proceedings. At the end of the day, a 2 hour lab session was arranged for all the participants. (That's about 200 people - 2 per computer). Accounts for all the participants were created on a single machine (A Compaq ML 530 running Red Hat 7.3). Initially, there were logging-in delays as all the people started their sessions almost simultanueously. This smoothened out after a few minutes and the "exercises" began in earnest. Almost the entire student population of KReSIT had volunteered for the lab management (held at 6 different rooms in the KReSIT building). The second day started with a superb talk on networking and security by Prof. Siva Kumar, head of the Compute Center at IIT Bombay. He showed live examples from the setup at the IIT firewalls. This was followed by various sessions on system adminstration, LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP), mail, DNS etc. After this an open QA session ensued where various doubts were cleared. The proceedings in the auditorium were concluded by an inspiring talk by Dr. D.B. Phatak, head of KReSIT. Day 2 lab sessions were held at the end of the day. An important learning: We felt that it might have made more sense to organise a workshop only for beginners. (a seperate one for experienced people). Because, all thru the 2 days, questions on installations, partitioning, X server problems, Windows interoperability etc continued. It was a mistake on our part to attempt to teach such a broad spectrum - from initiation to services management in just 2 days. Anyway, looking at the fantastic response we got (inspite of the moderately high fees), the Linux scene looks encouraging. Intel Conference

hello folks, Attended the Intel Developer Forum today at Taj regent..quite a good show with the Intel CTO Pat Gelsinger around. There were demos on the wireless network(802.11b) front, and a good talk and demo on the Hyper-threading feature of the Itanium processors. Do chk out something called "Banias" - its cool! There were some talks on best practices for using multi-processor systems. Got to know about OpenMP amd MPI - two API's for enabling ur apps to use clustered systems. Also some tools for perf-tuning and analyzing ur apps(VTune). technique to copy files from a Linux to Win XP partitition

hello, i use Mandrake 9.0 with ext3 file system and Win XP with NTFS. I am able to properly mount my Windows partition and read the files stored in that partition. However I am not able to copy any of my files from any of my linux folders back to XP.Windows is protected by a password.Hence I tried to make the relevant folders shareable through windows which didnt help.changing permissions through linux didnt help either, because it simply doesnt allow me to make the windows folders writeable. is it something regarding the issues that Linux has with NTFS that does not allow me to do this? hi, check out the linux-clustering howto @ www.tldp.org. get the oscar toolkit from sourceforge.net. Oscar is a really good tool for clustering. Oscar works with diskless nodes and can work with the lowest of configurations.Also it uses the master-slave configuration as compared to the p2p models some other clustering tools use. Also you can work with pvm/lam if you want to really do some hardcore clustering. Try using the MPI from notredame univ. It seems to be good. Qmail Installation error

Hi, While installing qmail (qmailv1.03) I encountered the following error. the qmail-send daemon was having problems with the /proc/profile file infact when using the readprofile command, I found that there was no file called profile on the /proc file system. can somebody enlighten me why "/proc/profile" is needed and what does it contain? Also why does qmail need it? can this error be circumvented by some means? Also trevor's site www.qmailtheeasyway.com is not accessible.

Courts in Maharashtra to use Linux.

Dear luggers !!! This is to inform you all that the Bombay High Court hasvse decided to have the computerisation of the activities of the Judiciary in Maharashtra on a Linux platform. As part of a recently initiated computerisation programme of all the subordinate courts of the Metropolitan area of Mumbai we are going to use Red Hat 7.3. For the last 3 years we are using a Red hat E-Mail server in the High Court. Also all District Courts in the State use a Slackware version of Linux on their systems. We have specific interest in issues relating to the following under Linux : a) Support for old binaries ( SCO Unix Sys V/ Xenix ). We have used old ibcs as well as present linux-abi modules to get some of our application running with a big load of users accessing the same. b) Still looking for a non-GUI word processor which is simple to use, implements curses/ncurses efficiently for screen handling, uses simple fonts ( or no font at all !!) to give speedy outputs of big documents speedily on DMPs. We have not yet found anything remotely similar to the good old SCO Lyrix OR Uniplex wordprocessors. If someone has any suggestion on this it is welcome. c) Method of printing simple text under Star office OR Open Office. This is linked to previous section subject. d) Bilingual support. We are trying out Indix. Lastly we would like some suggestions regarding a workshop we plan to hold for Judges ficers of the Courts sometime around Nov. 17-19. One session is planned on Linux and as the audience would be general users the presentations are proposed to be a of a general nature. I am contemplating getting either to get Red Hat technical persons to handle this OR may be any of you Luggers having the time !! Kindly feel free to mail me. Thanks a lot for the encouraging feedback recvd. from many of you to my mail on this forum. I would try to reply individually to those who had mailed me in such manner ASAP. We will definitly try to make use of your offers for helping us educate the users on Linux. I would be interacting with the senior officers here and get back to you reg. the specifics like the date of the workshop etc. At this stage it would be pertinent to note that considering the financial constraints the Courts are working under, we would not be looking at paid consultancy services from anyone and I would therefore request individuals not to contact me with offers of such nature. Would prefer mails to educate me of any such services which could be used later. Coming to some technical inputs recvd. reg. the wordprocessor issue, yes we require a full fledged wordproccessor and VIM etc dont qualify under that. Remember that we to provide users with easy to use tools with illustrative help and not things which would require macro usage etc. I plan to get emacs checked out. But i would suggest some of you luggers who are interested in this matter to meet me and have a look at the sort of wordprocessor we r using and compare that with their suggestions !!! - Mohan Krishnan --

Linux in courts

Dear P. V. Mohan Krishnan I am thrilled that the High Court have adopted the Linux path. I am a teacher at VJTI and would offer my services to the High Court. Being a govt duty , this should not cost you anything provided correct levers are activated . I feel there is a need for some expert knowledge and also of spreading of the . Though I love linux, I am not the expert. I do however feel I can help as intermediate and as trainer and troubleshooter at various levels.I also have access to students who can do the necessary problem solving. As far as training is concerned we will have to look for some one who has already tuned the emacs for the needs of highcourt typists. The requirements will have to be studied translated into features that emacs can achieve.Accordingly the macros (.emacs files) will have to be built. Different set of typists (those who take dictation from the Court and those who maintain registers , those who maintain web-sites, those who deal with lawyers, those who do office book-keeping etc, all will have different needs. Using these different macros, getting the users comfortable with these, and modifying them after usage for some time will eveolve. also making sure that they don't see this as labour displacement will be the HR role to be played skill fully . It is here that some systematic and mature thinking will have to be applied. I would love to be part of the effort. Another major issue that needs to be considered is that the court may create their content in Unicode. More over the court has also to deal with indian languages. Particularly the proceedings at the lower courts are in local language and correspondence with them also. The RedHat Version 8.0 has better support for this. Recently the font issue has been more or less resolved. This will ensure compatibility with future applications. As said again, I remain open to correction, but feel linuxers in Mumbai have a golden opportunity to prove how they can useful to the community.
