kernel:process modes

hi this is about a kernel mechanism... a process executes in 'user mode' normally. When it makes a system call it switches to 'kernel mode'. Now in 'user mode' it only as access to the process related data structures and in 'kernel mode',it can do anything. My Question is "Have I got everything right?" and secondly....do some processors have 'execution modes'? If so please give me some pointers to further information in that direction? thanks abhijeet

Fatal Linux problem

I was trying to load a new OS. I had linux partitions in hda5 and hda7. After the OS loaded, i tried to run linux rescue from pcq linux 7.1 (linux CD from PCQ which I use as my OS). I could not rescue using standard method. Next Itried to upgrade it and I found that I could not upgrade and was getting this error An error occured reading the partition table for the block device hda. The error has logical partition of type 0 detected. then there was some such explainatory mesage. On saying Ok, it skipped the disk. Then i loaded another hard disk and I can now see that the hard disk shows hda4 which has size equal to the addition of sizes of hda5 and hda7. but it does not show hda5 and 7 in brackets. How do i retrieve my old data. there is almost twenty days of un backed up data or rather data backed up on hda7. Any clues to this problems solution? Anand

Hello People A friend of mine is going to attend a Model United Nations (in which Highschool age students from several countries are chosen as representatives of a nation to the Model U.N) meet in Harvard and their topic is going to be Solutions to Cybercrime. I know the topic couldn't get more cliched and that there is no absolute solution as such but can u people give some ideas on how various nations can come up with something tangible as far as tackling cybercrime on an international level is concerned. There are several tricky areas like a German court (or was it French) recently instructed yahoo to stop showing Neo Nazi auctionables in their search and Yahoo got an injunction against that from a US court. Ok, no one's really asked for it, but there have been complaints that suggested it was needed, and lets face it, we've all wished that the archives had a search engine. It's even on the wishlist of mailman 3.0. Well, we at Ilug-bom have beaten the mailman team. We've integrated mailman with a search engine called namazu (http://www.namazu.org/). This version of namazu - specially customised for our mailing list by yours truly - is available at http://mm.ilug-bom.org.in/mailman/linuxers/ Have a look, search for your favourite stuff, don't overload the server, and give feedback. I've still got to implement a few features to provide better, more effective searches. I already know how to do this, just need some time. linux tech for india

dear linuxers, there have been several writeups, discussions, conferences, seminars etc. etc. about how linux is the os for india. yes, this is true due to the various factors that favor linux over other os and give linux a compelling argument. let's leave aside economic, social and political issues in support of linux for india. the question i would like to pose to the group is what *technical* innovations do know of that are propelling the cause of linux for india. the biggest one is of course, localization. there are efforts ongoing in this area which i know of namely ncst, iitm and indlinux. some other examples that i can think of are - simputer, dhvani (the text to speech engine for indian languages) - simputer, tapatap (the pen based computing libraries) - ncst/iitm's work on localization of linux - work on universal networking language and language independent forms. for research purposes i am trying to compile a list of all such initiative that are going on in the linux world specifically to help india. i know that there must be several localized software development projects, font development projects, e-governance projects etc. etc. that are specific to india. if you have any references of such companies/projects/work i would appreciate it if you could send a link/email address. actually even technical work done to further the cause of linux in "developing nations" would be interesting. thanks much. apu shah, research associate, media labs asia

Also, note that you should not use the 2.4.15 release of the kernel, as it has a file-system corruption bug. In case you are planning to use the latest one, try 2.4.16-pre1. reading word files through your email client

It seems that this mail never made it through the first time, so I am resending it. I've written a small script that can be run through your mailcap file. It uses wvWare and lynx/netscape to view word files through your mail program (pine, mutt, netscape, anything that uses mailcap). Help wanted with running X on Trident Blade XP card

hi guys, i just switched to a Trident Blade XP AGP card with 32 MB of VRAM. i was running RH 7.1 on a SiS 6215 earlier, and had managed to configure X to run pretty well. i tried to get X to run on the new card using xf86config. since it is not listed i chose Blade 3D which i thought was the nearest. this uses the 'trident' driver. but it gave me an error and quit. ive attached the relevant parts of /var/log/ XFree86.0.log. plz do tell me of any workarounds or drivers available for solving my problem Navin

Using one ISP account to serve many users - requested at meet

Please note, that I have only tried this once, and it worked with my system under the test conditions at that time. There is no guarantee that it will work under real life situations. I'm not going to go into the full details of the sendmail configuration file, you can find out about that from the many sendmail howtos available. What you need are these (in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc): FEATURE(`genericstable', `hash -o /etc/mail/genericstable') FEATURE(`virtusertable', `hash -o /etc/mail/virtusertable') Then, in /etc/mail/genericstable (no .db), add this: @localhost.localdomain realuser+%1(a)yourisp.com In /etc/mail/virtusertable (no .db), add this: realuser+*(a)yourisp.com %2(a)localhost.localdomain replace localhost.localdomain with the name of your local mail server. now, in /etc/mail/, either run make (if you have a makefile in there), or do: % makemap hash genericstable.db < genericstable % makemap hash virtusertable.db < virtusertable Restart sendmail. Now, I'm assuming that you're using fetchmail to get mail from your ISP's account. In that case, you could set up fetchmail to use multidrop, but that is very complicated, and prone to mail loops and undelivered mail. Instead, I'd suggest telling fetchmail to forward mail to procmail (both running as root), or let sendmail use procmail as the default mailer. Then, have procmail decide who the mail should go to. If you use sendmail to call procmail, then you can check $1 in the procmailrc file to find out what was passed after the + sign, so you can have a rule like this: :0 To: realuser+$1 !$1(a)localhost.localdomain You'll have to try these things and tweak around a bit to see what works, but when you do get it working right, post your procedure to the group. I'm sure there are other solutions, and products that make it much easier to do this thing, but the basic problems I see with trying to serve many users with a single mailbox, is that if mail is addressed to two users (eg: tellis+philip(a)vsnl.net and tellis+santosh(a)vsnl.net), there will only be one mail in the mailbox. I have no idea what sendmail will do with the addresses, and how you will sort them. Also, if the address is in the bcc field, then forget it. You'll have to write a separate rule for the Cc: field. One last thing. When you get this working, tell you users to set their email address as localuser(a)localhost.localdomain, and to tell everyone outside the company that their address is realuser+localuser(a)yourisp.com Hope this helps. Weird boots: kernel? FS?

So sometimes hal9k boots, sometimes doesn't. Symptoms: fsck required. Sometimes. I just took a look at the logs. Sometimes there are perfectly normal boots. Fw: multisession cdwriting

I am using pcqlinux 7.1 w/ a Samsung 304 combo cdrw/dvd drive. X-cdroast works quite well but does not support multisesion cds. I downloaded the latest cdrecord 1.10. I have read the cdwriting howto, and the README.multi file. I followed the instruction in the latter file to the letter but came up against a wall. Though cdrecord claims that the burn of the subsequent tracks is *good* I am unable to see the tracks on the cd. Both my cdrom & cdrw drives are capable of reading multisession cds. I found similar references on the suse list (sometime in Jan 2001), I wrote to the op and he wrote back that he had given up trying after he got no answers. I wrote to Jorg Schilling and he replied w/ a terse one liner saying that I have hit a kernel bug and he can't help me. I dug around in his website and it seems that he is plenty sore at not having his sg (scsi) driver included in the kernel (even goes to almost calling Alan Cox a nepotist -- but this is ot). He seems to have washed his hands off trynig to make cdrecord run w/ a 2.4 kernel. He mentions some patches for 2.0 & 2.2 trees but nothing for 2.4. Has anybody managed to burn multisesson cds ? If you have, can you please tell me your cdrecord and kernel version and the exact command line for it. Cdrecord barfs at this command: cdrecord -msinfo dev=0,0 and the kernel goes berserk, kfmclient seems to be spawning over and over again literally hundreds of times. Could you please include the KDE 2.2.2 source/rpm/srpm on it so that we can download that faster and avoid loading the main ftp site.. Also can the link be posted....ie the exact url i guess its db.ilug-bom.org. Has any one upgraded their KDE from the net..?? The Security-enhanced Linux's new features are designed to enforce the separation of information based on confidentiality and integrity requirements. script for windowmaker

i use windowmaker ( because of its simple appearance and fast loading ) i always dream of making it as comfortable as windows specifically the feature of windows where when you press ald+ctrl+del you get a process manager I have written a script in tcl/tk for this and i bind it to alt+ctrl+del in windowmaker wherein you can select any process or many processes you want to kill and press the kill button provided this is much more comfortable than typing ps -ax finding the pid and typing kill anybody intrested can download it from http://bhaskarshanbhag.tripod.com/acd.tk.zip note: *press ok when done instead of cancelling the application *please go thru the code before you run it *u can use kill -9 instead of kill by slightly modifying the script *suspend monitor uses xset which is included in XFree86 package *lock uses xscreensaver package so you should have it properly configured *donot keep alt+ctrl+del for a long time as it causes trouble by creating many instances of the program(bug !) specially if you have enabled system modal option *you can try to bind it with any other key in enlightenment and kde if alt+ctrl+del is captured by these window managers _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Does anyone have the Stevens' ``Advanced Programming in UNIX Environment'' (APUE) examples source code for *Linux*. I've downloaded the original sources from ftp.uu.net but it doesn't have a linux version (only svr4, sun and 4.4bsd); and even the svr4 version doesn't compile out of the box on my system. Hi everyone, I am currently running kernel 2.4.13 with XFS for my root partition. Since everyone was talking about ext3 and reiserfs I was just wondering how many people out there are using alternatives such as XFS and JFS. btw XFS is way cool and fast as hell. Also I'm working on an iptables alternative for the IBM linux contest and purely out of curiosity I was wondering how many of you guys are developing any big linux app or utility. I dont ususally read about any linux programming stuff on this list, and just wanted to get to know more people into big time linux programming. regards Vicky

Hi everyone, I am currently running kernel 2.4.13 with XFS for my root partition. Since everyone was talking about ext3 and reiserfs I was just wondering how many people out there are using alternatives such as XFS and JFS. btw XFS is way cool and fast as hell. Also I'm working on an iptables alternative for the IBM linux contest and purely out of curiosity I was wondering how many of you guys are developing any big linux app or utility. I dont ususally read about any linux programming stuff on this list, and just wanted to get to know more people into big time linux programming. regards Vicky

Windows not booting from hdc1

I have 2 disks, primary master (Linux) and secondary master (Windows). I've set lilo to boot from hdc1 for label "dos". But when I try to boot into dos, I get the message "Invalid System Disk, Press Any Key To Continue". hdc1 is Windows 98. Any ideas? Tnx. hi, i am trying to install a ne2000 compatible jumperless ethernet card on a rh 7.1. but it is not working. could anyone pls tell me some work around for this? i feel that the problem is due to correct addr and interrupt setting but how do i configure something when i don't know the settings? also where do i get to see a list of kernel modules available to handle the card? thanx ulhas

Booting problem, kernel panic, tried to kill idle process, keeps asking for fsck of root partition. That is a summary of what happens when my mom tries to boot the Linux box that she's trying to use. That's all I could gather over the phone. It's a Redhat box with custom kernel etc. It was working when I left. Could someone go over there (Prabhadevi) and find out what the real problem is, and fix it? She has the root password and her user account. I'd do it, but being in California is a problem. linux in engg colleges

I have just done my BE (comps) from the university. To the best of my knowledge , my college , Ram rao Adik Institute of technology,Nerul,DY patil vidyanagar is the only college to have a first class Linux server lab with RH being used. Also it is the only college which probably has a LUG in the college -complete with mailing list and all....we all had login/passwds ,email accts... the best thing is this - all this is being managed by students -dedicated ones. Why dosent someone get in touch with RAIT and then go slowly from there - word spreads... ALso yes FE Unix is confirmed - but pls dont be too optimistic ...heres the real scene - FE's (first year guys) have 6 subjects , Unix with C being one of them For most , programming is a new concept , Unix being the extra burden. Infact for most professors too , Unix is a alien idea , anything the students do outside the cheap 100/- guides available will be adding to the limited knowledge the professor has. So all students will stick to textbooks since no one does practicals in engineering till maybe 3/4th year. Also Linux initiative in colleges - pls catch only 2/3rd year students. reason - only students who will want to work for u are students who want to do an MS in CS/EE/CE in usa. For which they need to show they were geeks all along , Linux being the perfect route ..specially when they do something for college - like organise "seminars " for NCST and TIFR(biig names) guys. this will be exaggerated to one paragraph in their recommendations and most engineering profs will blindly sign --so pls be careful abt the whole scene. again we might also get something useful by getting some awareness. I can contribute on sundays...in Mumbai...after december.. and yea right now I am in PCS , working for General Electric-Aircraft Engines on Java/JSP/servlets .....this is where most engineer learn their fundas - the 3 month industry training after college .. Linux localization for Hindi

The system has been developed under the project name "IndiX" and it is funded by Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India under their "Technology Development for Indian Languages (TDIL)" programme. Dear Linuxers, I have installed redhat 7.2 and found something named iSCSI .... can somebody explain the advantage of iSCSI over IDE Even /dev/cdrom which is normally sym linked to IDE CD-ROM viz. /dev/hdd does not work under 7.2 instead /dev/cdrom1 is sym linked to /dev/sdd01 which works for IDE CDROM... regards lilo
