It either shows y or not set. But I have set a lot of modules as M, for that matter the .config does not show up that RTL8139 is selected at all. Seems like whatever I select as module is neither selected as part of kernel nor in the modules. In the /lib/modules/2.4.12/kernel/drivers/net just see one module dummy.o and thats it. Infact whenever I run make modules_install, I see messages nothing to be done for modules_install as it enters various directories in the src tree. Its somewhere I'm making a blunder but cant figure it out. While recompiling the kernel when I did #make modules It gives me the following error at the end make[2]: *** [dummy.o] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-2.4.2/drivers/net' make[1]: *** [_modsubdir_net] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-2.4.2/drivers' make: *** [_mod_drivers] Error 2 and exits. what might be the problem? But the problem is after rebooting when I see /lib/modules/2.4.12/kernel/drivers/net/dummy.o and thats it. I dont see 8139too.o. Infact I can just see a directory net in drivers. Whereas in my old kernel /lib/modules/2.4.2-12/kernel/drivers, I can see many modules. many of those not required though. But in the new kernel modules I dont see anything other than net. Not even fs, probably that is why my windows partitions also cannot be mounted, says not supported by kernel. I guess there is some mistake I might be doing but can't figure it out. Do I ned to make any changes to /etc/modules.conf. The entry for 8139too is already there. Do I have to kmod, modprobe etc before rebooting the first time. PLease help. Folks, I just installed RH6.2 at a friend's place. He has a 815 motherboard with on board graphics. How do configure x? mouse not responding in KDE

Hello, I have a Microsoft Intellimouse (2 buttons) which is serially connected to DOS COM1. Whenever I run KDE, the mouse does not respond but it does change its icon depending on what is positioned underneath it. For example, while on the desktop, it looks like a pointer but when xterm is running, it changes to an "I" bar. switch INIT run level at boot time

Hello, I edited the /etc/inittab file so that the INIT run level is 5 by default. When my machine starts, it boots normally upto the command line interface login prompt and then tries to start X. It is unable to do so successfully - the screen keeps flickering and sometimes shows a large X in the middle. I tried to come out of it by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 and Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. None of these work. I have to invariably type Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot. I tried to boot from the PCQLinux 7.1 CD ROM and go into "linux rescue" mode but the system would hang after displaying the message "Starting anaconda...please wait". Is it possible to change the INIT run levl at boot time by passing the appropriate command to the kernel? If not, what is the solution to this problem? I cannot get any work done at all because of it! Thanks. Parul Mathur

Remote X-clients in Debian

Hi, I can't get the X-server on my machine to display applications running on a remote servers. Here's what I have been doing 1. open an SSH connection to the server from my machine 2. set the display environment there so that it points to my machine 3. run "xhost +" to disable access control on my machine Inspite of that, applications on the remote machine fail to start with the message "Unable to open the display." But the same steps seem to work very well on RedHat machines. Is there something else that needs to be done on Debian? Linus Torvalds was recently interviewed by OSNews. These are his answers to some of the questions: What do you think of the FreeBSD 5 kernel and WindowsXP's new features from a clearly technical point of view? Linus Torvalds: I don't actually follow other operating systems much. I don't compete - I just worry about making Linux better than itself, not others. And quite frankly, I don't see anythign very interesting on a technical level in either. What is your opinion on Hailstorm, .Net and the rest of the technologies Microsoft is preparing to roll out in the years to come? Can these releases have an impact on Linux and if yes, in what way? Linus Torvalds: See my answer about not caring what the competition does, but doing my own thing as well as I can.. What is your opinion on RMS insisting calling Linux as GNU/Linux? Linus Torvalds: I don't mind what rms calls the system. I don't think his arguments for the naming are very valid, but hey, at the same time I really couldn't care less. How do you see the future of Linux for the next 5 or 10 years from an engineering but also a marketing eye? Linus Torvalds: I don't use a marketing eye, I simply don't care. There are others who do, I'll let them worry about it. >From a technical standpoint, I believe the kernel will be "more of the same", and that all the _really_ interesting stuff will be going on in user space. That's not to say that there aren't problems to keep us occupied in the kernel too, I just don't think they make for all that interesting reading ;) My thoughts: How often have we, as developers, built our tools based on what the competition does? How often have we measured our systems against our competitors and not as the tool itself? Linus' philosophy is basically, don't bother about what the others are doing, just make your own stuff better today than what it was yesterday. Most of us started out with that philosophy (at least I did), but somewhere down the line the marketroids got to us. Maybe it was done in school and college, maybe it was done at home. It's the whole concept of getting measuring success by money earned that tends to screw up developers. This, is possibly just one of the things that seperates hackers from the rest. -- Yeah. X crashes

X crashes very frequently on my machine(PCQ 7.1). Also sometimes when X crashes the machine hangs. I use X at 16bit 800x600 resolution on: AMD K6-2 with 128 MB ram and SiS 6326 card. Printing problem

Hello, I have recently re-installed Red Hat 7.1 on my machine. Everything works fine, except for printing. A HP LaserJet 4550 Colour printer is connect to my machine, via parallel port. I also use a remote laser printer (HP Laserjet 4050) for printing. Openldap server with authorization.

Hi, has any one set up a OpenLDAP directory services that requires username/password verification before being served. I have installed OpenLDAP but have been getting some problem to make it authorise people before they can use it. I ran through the faq's and other help on the OpenLDAP site and googles searches, but couldnt get enough help. Earlier I had mentioned this as 256 kB RAM - I'm sorry. My CPU is Cyrix MediaGX MMX Enhanced 233 MHz. X crashes mysteriously

A friend's machine (PCQ7.1) hangs mysteriously after an X crash. What we found was this: When running at a high resolution, there is insufficient memory to load the direct rendering manager (drm), and the server runs properly. When the resolution is lowered, there is more video memory available, and hence the drm is loaded. In particular, the RENDER extension, which is used for Anti Aliased fonts. When drm is loaded, OpenGL programs crash X and the entire system. When drm is not loaded, OpenGL programs run slowly. Any ideas? The card is Matrox Millenium with 8MB VRAM. [OT] Satyam Online & nttp

anybody using satyam's interenet conn.? i can connect to their service, brows the web, send/recieve emails. but i cannot connect to my nttp server (no the server is not down, i can conn. through VSNL). it seems that they might have disabled port 119.(don't know why?) is there any way still left. can i make use of any other port? how? like emulating something (please bear with me, i donno much about networking & TCP/IP). by the way i tried to contact to their help desk, but the no. always returns with no reply. i'm using knode & pan. Just some shameless advertising. If any of you have been using my httptype program, there is a new version out. Get it from freshmeat. More than anything, the code is cleaner, and one bug in getting port numbers has been fixed. I've also written an implementation of tictactoe that does not use lookahead. It can play any odd sized board (3, 5, 7) and will never lose except when playing second on boards of size 1. It's got a 9/10 rating on freshmeat. using loadin on a loopback partiton

Hi all, been trying to mount linux on a windows fat32. lilo didnt get installed so using loadlin. loadlin c:\vmlinuz root=/dev/loop0 doesnt seem to work and linux isnt booting. issues a kernel panic error. even when i try to use this loadlin c:\vmlinuz root=/dev/hdax where x is 1 to 8 all combinations... same error message any suggestions. thanks, Prem.
