FN My beautiful [GNU]Linux BITS-Pilani Goa campus has grown over the past four to five years, and now has over 2000 students on the outskirts of Vasco/Dabolim. At a Software Freedom Day held on the campus recently (Sept 27, 2008) we encounter students, and learn about their interest in Free Software and Open Source. Also some images from an event that saw talks and presentation span the better part of two days. This video starts with a showcasing of the potential of GNU/Linux, the largely volunteer-built alternative computing system... that's in fact better than the 'real thing' (my view)! http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=Py6YdW03YYE Lyx ... and all that LyX is a document processor following the self-coined "what you see is what you mean" paradigm (WYSIWYM), as opposed to the WYSIWYG ideas used by word processors. This means that the user only has to care about the structure and content of the text, while the formatting is done by LaTeX, an advanced typesetting system. LyX is designed for authors who want professional output with a minimum of effort and without becoming specialists in typesetting. The job of typesetting is done mostly by the computer, following a predefined set of rules called a style, and not by the author. Specific knowledge of the LaTeX document processing system is not necessary but may improve editing with LyX significantly for specialist purposes. DP explains how he uses this tool... kmail does not accept two different passwords

hi, I have two email accounts at foo.com and bar.com. They have different passwords. Receiving mail is ok - but for sending, only the password for one account is used in both - the password for the first account gets changed to that of the second account when the second account is set up. Letting root send email to an application level user --- and using a crontabs job to forward it on -- or TCP/IP poke or a UDP datagram

Hi, Root is system user --- has various privileges. The application users are completely distinct from the root user ----- but they can share the root user group "wheel". so unless you want very high thruput why are you modifying the kernel and making it bigger. You can just send an email to the application level user, have a crontab job pick it up every 1 minute or every 1 second and forward the email on. You can even change the group of the application level user. Or once you send the email --- u can send a datagram "pick/poke/UDP packet" tcp/ip signal to waken the user. Canonical Not Great Contributor

I just learnt from a friend of mine that I should stop using Ubuntu as Canonical is not contributing to the development of GNU/Linux systems as compared to other players. He also suggested that since most of its stuff, or nothing, is upstream so we cant trust it. Also his argument was, being run by one man, who may tomorrow change his mind and stop support to Ubuntu, then what? So, I am bringing this issue to the lista and have people's opinion as to how much Canonical has contributed and how wise is the decision to use Ubuntu? Here is the article of Greg Kroah-Hartman, maintainer of the USB and other subsystems in the Linux kernel mentioning Canonical contribution to be 100 patches viz a viz 230 by Mandriva and only 270 by Gentoo. Hello List, A few meetings ago,I had mentioned my plans for holding an presentation on linux which turned into an install fest after consultation with LUG members.the present situation is that the installfest is scheduled on 3rd of October and the likely number of participants at the installfest is turning out to be potentially more than the CDs I have available,which is 28. ShipIt would take too long a time to send the CDs,therefore,list members who have an excess of Ubuntu 8.04/8.04.1 CDs,preferably received from ShipIt,because they will be in the "official" (:P) covers,could you help out and contribute the excess CDs in your posession for the installfest? Hi, I have written a perl/shell script on one of our servers which checks the server health and send alert emails to administrators.The script runs as a cron job under root privileges, it is working properly.But the email which we receive has From email address : root(a)server.name, Is there any way to change this email address ? The Invitation text says "The objective of the event will be the launch of the project for the development of a Tamil Version of the GNU/ Linux operating system", why there is a need of another distribution when tamil is well supported in most of the upstream distributions? . Let it be the work of Tamil Localisation groups. 4. The contacts provided in the website contact page is not at all familiar in Free Software Community. And There is no information on who is organising this event. On a quick checkup with friends in Chennai, they says it is an event Organised by Communist Party of India (Marxist) . Thats why the secrecy. I don't have a problem in a political party supporting free software cause. But If it is the case i am very suspicious on following points 1. The exclusion of the Free Software Movement in Chennai in Organising it, 2. Creating a body with power structure before Contributing anything . I dont think a free software Foundation is not needed for releasing a Localised GNU/Linux Distribution 3. I am using Firefox 3.0.1 on CentOS 5.2 Whenever I enter wrong url in address bar it redirects me to http://searchportal.information.com/ I didn't find any info on google regarding how to stop this. I used to get orkut login page upon entering just "orkut" in address bar and pressing enter, when I was using Firefox 2. But it now redirects to searchportal What's the exact problem? and how to get rid of this? Is this a DNS issue? I use MTNL Broadband, so both the DNS listed in router are DNS IPs provided by MTNL. The development requires people to have a GPS enabled phone, (external or internal GPS) and a small utility that sits on the phone and updates location to the server. On the NREGA ICT infrastructure page - http://nrega.nic.in/ictinfrastructure.htm I found this --> http://nrega.nic.in/ict/ict3.asp check the columns titled - No. of Applications Running and it shows number of 'applications' running on Microsoft platforms and those running on 'open source' platforms. Not too sure what this means. Why would for e.g some state have 450 s/w applications ??and why would they be all different? Does anybody know what exactly this means? I'm guessing they mean number of machines running on MS or open source. Whatever it is, the fact that open source has a count of 0 in most states is something worth looking into. Thunderbird 2 bug?

Hello, There is Kubuntu 8.04 KDE4 on a PC and it has been upgraded to the latest apt packages. Thunderbird 2 was installed from apt packages. A gmail account was setup but it fails to authenticate the password and returns a normal wrong password error. After wasting a lot of time rechecking and suspecting the keyboard, I setup the account in Kmail and it worked fine. So there appears to be a bug in that Thunderbird package. I would also like to add that KDE4 does not allow editing of its menus and Kmail's icon which was missing from the 'Internet' sub-menu, could not be added manually. Some people on the net appear to have similar problems. Even creating a new application shortcut on the desktop as well as task bar is not possible with a right click as that option itself is missing. KDE4 is still a little 'nangu'. -- Regards, Rony. G.I.S.S. is an open infrastructure for giving voice to alternative, minoritarian and non-commercial voices in the official media landscape. we ( lluis gomez i bigorda and me, yves degoyon ) have been developping open source technologies since many years now... and have been to brasil, palestina to make workshops before.. we will be in india from the 15th of September to the 15th of October. our original plan was to make a free media workshop in Dahanu near Mumbai with Nomad India ( http://nomadindia.net ), that i first met in brasil in the World Social Forum. yesterday, Hemant from nomad india sent us a notice that they won't be able to organize this workshop, as they are helping people victims of the flood in the region of Bihar ( Nepal ), as you must know... all the original plan is documented here: http://giss.tv/wiki/index.php/Workshop_India including the program of the workshop. so we are looking for other possibilities of meeting people working in open-source and free media. we could organize a short presentation, some workshop or even an informal meeting with people interested in these subjects. we have some funding from NL Net foundation to cover our travel and hosting expenses, so this is not a request for funding ). we could travel within this month across the country to Bangalore or New Delhi for example... so, let us know what would be possible to organize in these dates, knowing that we have to reorganize our activities in a short period of time, it can be some informal meetings ( in a hacklab for example, we like that ) ). hope all the situation will get back to normal in Nepal too.. He may have forgotten to mention that it was an external drive. This is an interesting statement reproduced. Md5sum Input/Output Errors Crash System

Hello, I have downloaded the first 10 Debian Etch CDs and out of 10 ISOs, 2 or 3 had an md5sum problem. While the good md5 returns a proper checksum value, the bad ones return an Input/Output error. The problem is that when this error occurs, the link between the system and HDD is lost and no further commands are accepted as they need to be picked up from the HDD. The system blanks out and I have to force shutdown and reboot it. Yesterday I kept the Lenny live CD for download and its md5sum gave the same problem today morning. I had mentioned this problem earlier too and the HDD was suspected. However for the good ISO checksums there is no problem whatsoever. Translate by pressing "Suggest" button after putting the corresponding text. The suggestions will be moderated by the admin, which is currently me for Hindi, and will merge it to the main file. The FLOSS programme at Sarai is involved primarily in Indian language computing, and one of the focal points of the work this year will be (a) putting together customised versions of popular Linux distributions like Debian, Fedora, and Ubuntu that are specialised to Indian language computing, and (b) organising documentation to cover the installation, and usage of applications on these distributions in Indian languages. The goal is to have Indian language computing on free operating systems become at least as easy as it is with English. Besides, we also work on various open-source technologies including mobile computing (especially, the use of Indian languages on mobiles), GPS, GIS, electronics, embedded devices, and robotics. The successful candidate is also strongly encouraged to have open-source interests of their own, and they can be allocated time to work on these. A brief description of the responsibilities of the position include: o Coordinating with major Linux distributions for ensuring up-to-date Indian language packages for fonts, input methods, etc. o Coordination with major applications like OpenOffice, Mozilla, and Scribus for incorporation of Indian language packs, and the building of releases. o Facilitating development work in Indian language computing by working with various external developers such as Scribus, aspell, desktop publishing, and semantic analysis folk, etc. o Driving documentation by making an outline of the documents needed for installing and using Indian languages on FLOSS operating systems and applications. o Keeping abreast of new technology, and facilitating the development of cutting-edge technologies for Indian languages, such as speech-to-text, optical character recognition, etc. o FLOSS Evangelism, and support for people seeking to deploy FLOSS Indian language solutions. Besides this, the person will also be expected to take up part of the managerial tasks associated with the current FLOSSINCLUDE projects, and other ongoing FLOSS projects at Sarai. Some infrastructural, and travel funds will also be made available. It is possible for the selected candidate to work largely from outside the physical environs of Sarai, though someone from the Delhi NCR region would be strongly preferred. Freedom Toaster launched in India!!!

Hey, September first was that amazing day, when the first freedom toaster was launched in India. Please check <http://www.zyxware.com/articles/2008/09/01/zyxware-announces-launch-of-indi…> We are conducting GNU/Linux install fest at technopark, trivandrum and it will be there till 5th september. The GNU/Linux users group, trivandrum is organizing the fest. it was inaugurated on 1st sept, at the technopark by the Kerala State IT Mission Director, Mr. Kelkar. The Freedom Toaster was also unveiled during the same time. If any of your friends are working at the Technopark, Trivandrum, kindly encourage them to visit the fest and take advantage of it.
