fossconf update

Hi, Fossconf took place in Chennai on Feb 1 - 3 2008. There were around 100 talks, 40 demo stalls with student projects done in FOSS and tutorial sessions. The attendance was around 700 on the first day, 1500-2000 on the second day and around 600 on the third day. About 80% of the audience were engineering college students. Volunteers and student projects came from engineering colleges in Chennai as well as from colleges in Salem, Madurai, Vellore and Tirunelveli. Most of the speakers were first time speakers, and although the bulk of them were from Tamilnadu, we had speakers from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Goa, Trivandrum and Nellore. We also had a large number of speakers from the academic community who were participating in a FOSS event for the first time. The event was pretty chaotic at times since all of us were n00bs at conducting conferences. Many speakers had a rough time. In spite of the huge attendance, poor logistics lead to many talks having a very thin audience. But by and large, the feedback we have got has been positive. We thank those members of your LUG who helped out in the event and gave us support. Kubuntu Gutsy going to initramfs prompt

I have a completely updated Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10). Recently there have been some random problem. Sometimes when I try to boot there seems to be no activity on the splash screen and after a while it takes me to the initramfs prompt (Failure to mount root filesystem). But again sometimes it boots just fine with no problems whatsoever. I found that this was a bug. [1] The only solution to get around this problem was to append "all_generic_ide" to the root line in menu.lst. But I read in the bug report discussion that it may hamper the performance of my HDDs (which are already slow). Is there any other way to get around this problem? Fedora 8, proxy settings, some crashes in KDE and Super Grub Disk!

List, A little flashback. I had earlier posted a query about non-destructive resizing of NTFS partitions (where free space is not consolidated even after defragmentation) with gparted, for which there was no clear reply. Looking further, I found that ntfsresize, which is used by gparted, does not need free space consolidation. However, the only catch is that defragmentation should not leave any data near the end of the disk. OK, so partitioning done, I have installed Fedora 8 on my laptop with only KDE on it (space constraints). I want to add some packages not on the DVD, but I am facing some problems currently, as follows: 1. Environmental proxy settings: my internet connection goes through an open proxy that does not require any UID or password. I have manually configured firefox and konqueror's proxy settings and I can connect to the internet through them. However, yum / pup / pirut do not work. I have specified the proxy settings in the root bash profile, my (user) bash profile, and in the global profile under /etc/profile, but I cannot still connect. Any pointers? 2. Crashes: The network card control applets under KDE available as nm-applet or system-control-network crash when run. This happened even before I had specified any network settings. system-config-network works properly, methinks. Has anybody else faced this problem, and is there a solution? 3. Multimedia: Kaffeine, Amarok, etc. are unable to play even audio CDs. I wonder why. Is this what bleeding edge is supposed to be? Remember, my system is not updated, as yum doesn't work. Oh, and having installed grub on /dev/sda3 and not the MBR, I have found and started using Super Grub Disk (http://supergrub.forjamari.linex.org/) to boot Fedora. I have burnt its ISO to a CD/RW. It is really wonderful. I think all distros should offer it as a part of their live CD distributions. The ISO is just 3.5 MB, and a bz2 archive is only 500k odd in size.

If your network is fine and windows share name, user name and password are correct, then the following command should mount the shared folder on Windows server running on (say) 10.1.1.1 to /mnt on your Linux system. mount -t cifs -o user=winuser,password=winpass //10.1.1.1/sharename /mnt Be root to execute this command. If share name or password contains white spaces, then appropriate quotes needed to be added for your shell to treat them properly. Raghu

And, we traditionally only use either amd64 (AMD64 family) or i386 (Intel 32 bit processors) or powerpc (Mac is now on Intel processors). I am trying to make changes to the /etc/inputrc file ..... ( this file basically handles keyboard mapping for specific situations. see http://tldp.org/LDP/lfs/LFS-BOOK-6.1.1-HTML/chapter07/inputrc.html ) but not much info is given on how to edit the file as per one likes. How to configure 2 CPUs on Fedora

Hi, I have Xeon Quad core processor server. And I have attached one more same processor to that motherboard. So now I have two processors on one motherboard. I have already installed Fedora Core4 on that. But after attaching new processor instead of getting fast its getting slow. Specially when samba user connects samba share or nfs clients connect nfs share it takes 2-3 or more for them. Doing this is fairly simple. 1. Add the event to http://upcoming.yahoo.com if it is not already there 2. Tag the event with the two tags "foss" and "india" You can do the same for barcamp style events, but use the tag "unconference" instead of "foss". Creating opportunities for Linux imlementations

Friends, We have been making various attempts to create opportunities for Linux deployments and have met with mixed successes. Recently, thinking that RTI can be used as a tool for entering the Government sector, we used this tool and have stopped/postponed one implementation, where we feel Linux can be the option, whereas the user has opted for win$ only. We feel that a small group, what is also called a "special interest group" could be created that can take up this activity strongly. After the RTI is filed and the response received, there is need of a follow-up that would involve technical expertise, which the members of this group can provide and this activity can then move forward. If there is interest in it, please get in touch with me. I am at Delhi and the first case we have got is in delhi itself. Due to legal reasons, its good not to take the name here at this stage, but, this can be a very good beginning for Linux entering into areas that are kept away from it by the "smart fellows" (actually, we may better called them bribed fellows). This activity, can not only give a good name to the LUGs but also make a real difference in the environment. There may be soon the need of filing cases and taking the matter to a level where the decible level of sound about Linux can grow real big, for the environment to notice it in a very interesting manner. Mysql embedded with Qt.

Hi, I am currently trying to make a small portfolio managing application using Qt4.3.3 + mysql-5.1. I wanted to use Mysql embedded rather then full server. I recompiled the qt mysql driver for using mysql embedded as explained in the Qt manual (qassistant) and the driver compiled successfully. I installed the newly compiled driver at its appropriate location. Now when I start my application, I get the following error...... 080201 14:10:06 InnoDB: Operating system error number 13 in a file operation. InnoDB: The error means mysqld does not have the access rights to InnoDB: the directory. InnoDB: File name /var/lib/mysql/ibdata1 InnoDB: File operation call: 'open'. InnoDB: Cannot continue operation. Actually I don't know how to use this driver.... or rather I should say that how to use the embedded MySQL system. Am I supposed to copy the any files within my application project directory. I tried to search on the net, but couldn't find much to continue. In my main.cpp (where I initialise the mysql server connection), I commented the connection parameters that are used when using the mysql server. Linuxers, We are pleased to inform you that National Institute of Technology, Calicut will be hosting its annual free and open source software conference, namely FOSS Meet @ NITC 2008, on 28th, 29th and 30th of March 2008. This time the focus of the event is to get more students actively involved in FOSS. In addition to that, this year, we are starting a contest called FOSSDev, to promote student participation in and contribution to FOSS. The project will involve creating tools for the visualization of atmospheric weather data using Mayavi. Mayavi is an open source, interactive, 3D visualization tool written in Python. Hello List, A social movement wants to build a dynamic website with the following features : 1. The site designing will be done once and will remain the same for quiet some time; Further on, there will be a lot of content added/modified on regular basis and the need is for any of their members to be able to do it (like, I think it happens with the CMS like Joomla, Drupal among others); 2. Polling on various issues, Creation of electronic Newsletters to be emailed to subscribers, based on information existing on the site; 3. Separate areas for separate levels of visitors; 4. Discussion forum; 5. Search through the site for terms, words; 6. Adding links of other sites similar to theirs; 7. Giving links to various issues and grouping them under issues (subjects); perhaps there can be many more things through which they can link their activities happening across the country and they are working on these. they would like to have a site that will give room for adding more features as they develop the web-based way of working further. One main concern is that if the management of such a site needs a technical specialist, it will be a problem. They want to train some of their members form a team, learn this and manage the site. Weird video playback issues

Hi all, i use ubuntu 7.10. i'm very happy with it but off late i have this weird problem. The Video playback gets Black and white all of a sudden and once it is that way it remains that way only. The only remedy to this is that i have to make a new account and then view the same video again. It works fine!!!!! i'm pretty new to ubuntu and i am just a basic user. Can anybody help i have installed gstreamer plugins ( all non-free codecs too). even the audio visualisation in totem or vlc gets black and white..... -- Joel Solomon -- Joel Solomon

[OT] Mild, insidious FUD: Cheap laptops

Today's Business Standard features an article on the front page on cheap laptops on the market, being offered with Linux pre-installed. You can read it here: http://www.businessstandard.com/common/news_article.php?leftnm=8&subLeft=3&… The article's tone seems to be to downplay the emergence of the GNU/Linux OS and software package as a strong alternative to Windows and MS Office, requiring modest hardware to run, and the increasing ease of usage. Instead, it quotes the disadvantage of having to pay Redhat or Novell for support as compared to installing proprietary software from Microsoft. There is no mention of the fact that hardly any home user of Microsoft Windows ever reads up Microsoft Knowledge Base articles or calls Microsoft for support, at least in India. There is no mention of the fact that Ubuntu, which is usually pre-installed on laptops, is available with long term support pledges, that it is very easy to keep a GNU/Linux installation updated, much more so than in case of Microsoft's offerings, which anyway cost you heavily for each upgrade. Similarly, it also conveniently ignores the fact that apart from an office suite and the basic operating system, GNU/Linux distributions also feature a huge variety of other Free software packages, the Windows equivalents of which will see you bankrupting yourself over a period of, say, two years, considering installation and upgrades. In fact, in the print version, there is a big box comparing the prices of software on 'cheap laptops' with Microsoft offerings, where it mentions, as an alternative to MS Office, Google Docs! OpenOffice is mentioned in the article, but only briefly. It seems there is an attempt to suggest that even though the laptop may be cheap, if you want to use serious software, you will have to pay a large sum of money or buy a costlier laptop. Oh, and the aspect of Windows' vulnerability is also blithely ignored. All in all, considering that IDC has been quoted in the study, the bogeyman of piracy is brought forth, and there is a quote from Microsoft saying that the OEM versions of Windows and MS Office are cheaper than off-the-shelf purchases, this seems a direct and concerted, but veiled effort to cast aspersions on the opportunity offered by products such as MiLeap etc. Gentlemen, I call FUD. I am also posting this mail as a comment to the article. You are encouraged to add your comments likewise.

hi, just an update on fossconf chennai - we have a good list of speakers - most of them new and speaking for the first time. We have also been able to attract quite a few people from academia. Also a few student groups doing their projects in foss.
