---- Excerpts of the meeting After transforming Auxilium School wadala to Linux, ILUG BOM had an excellent meeting with teachers and students on 14th Oct 2017 at DBIT-Kurla. Though good number of teachers have registered for the meet but due to heavy rains many haven't dared to take risk and some due to personal reasons. No problem, there is always a second time. The meet started with the introduction of everyone including the new comers. few were completely new to Linux. They showed lot of interest in learning Linux. Mr. Joe Steve c ms and softwares, in short, why and what of Linux. He highlighted the need for FOSS and how it should be, in the reach of common man as it is community driven. Replying to Shashwat's (a student of 12th standard) question, the difference between hackers and crackers Joe narrated an interesting story on hackers and also mentioned why that word was coined. Mr. Rajeev unpacked his bundle of knowledge and explained the Linux Fedora starting from installation of the OS which is customized for schools and school teachers. He dealt with most of the applications which are useful to teachers such as tuxpaint, tuxmath, Unicode for devanagari script etc. Most interestingly he made an impeccable explanation of Libre office giving importance to Libre Writer, Libre calc and Libre impress which are far better than their counterpart softwares like Office word, Excel sheet and Power Point Presentation of MS Office. Mr. Rajeev cleared the doubts of teachers in a lucid language. At the end of his session Mr. Rajeev gifted everyone with a bootable DVD of Fedora. Next, Mr. Raghavendra Kamat a professional artist, perspicuously ( with clarity and lucidity ) explained GIMP ( GNU Image Manipulation Program ) to everyone's understanding. He emphasized on the tools that are available in GIMP starting from types of brushes of different thickness, different colors, different pallets etc. He demonstrated multilingual text usage in GIMP especially combination of two letters in Marathi or Hindi, to be precise Devanagari script. He beautifully showed with ease that how one can touch, cut, crop and change the complexion of the an image and also warned, public of it's misuse. Mrs. Sarita Mulay a representative of Shishuvan School of Matunga offered us a pleasant chance to meet the teachers of her School and demonstrate Linux starting from installation, to use of all applications which are beneficial to teachers but only when school reopens after Diwali Vacation. She also assured us of place in her School for our future meet ups. At the end all dispersed with a sense of gratitude and achieving some thing new. All of them ( new entrants ) showed interest in continuing with us in the journey of Linux and also to help us in our mission ..... Prahlad C

This years Focus is Free & Libre Software in Education. We have planned to Invite Teachers and students for a seminar , which will highlight the role of free software in education. Agenda: 1. Event Summary for the 9th September 2017 ILUG-BOM Meetup

Hi Everyone, The meeting on the 9th of September 2017 started off by 3 pm, with a small group of regulars(Including milind and raghu) and a few students from DBIT coming together for a round of introductions. We also got a mini intro from our speaker for the day, Achilles. We waited a short while as the logistics of projection and access to the relevant github accounts were being sorted, allowing a few more participants to troop into the room. We then started on a fascinating look into a FOSS developer's mindset, and watched how software would evolve through the prism of the various projects that Achilles has been involved with. We started off with Achilles professing his deep love for python and clean code, and graduated to the importance of simple and neat API's, where he used the versatile python Request library as an example of how to build a powerful but still clean API interface. We then learnt how Readme Driven Development(RDD) is one of the various paradigms that can be used to drive development of a FOSS project, and that it is ideally suited to managing small to mid sized projects, generally centred around one primary author + maintainer. The session was peppered with a lot of interesting detours into a variety of topics, ranging from a discussion of the importance of open data sets, and the state of software in the bioinformatics domain. The participants then got involved, with Achilles throwing the floor open to all types of questions, especially from the DBIT student participants. In fact, with the lively Q&A session that followed Achilles's talk, Milind had to step in and remind both the speaker and the audience that we had run out of time. The action then shifted to the 2 guest foundations that were present at the meeting. First up was the Digital Freedom Foundation(DFF), represented by its founder, Mr Krishnakant Mane, also an ilug-bom old timer whom we were glad welcome back after an extended break. His talk, covering a range of topics, centred on the importance of FOSS in education, also drew a lot of parallels with our recently concluded outreach activity at St. Mary's, and highlighted a number of avenues where the DFF and ILUG-BOM could collaborate in this sphere. Next, we had representatives of the Free Software Movement of Maharashtra(FSMM) step up and take the stage, drawing the audience's attention towards the more intangible aspects of "Freedom" as it applies in a digital world. Using a variety of examples like Facebook's thankfully-failed FreeBasics Initiative, they explained how the importance of Freedom reaches far beyond just the ability to study and modify the code of the software that we may run(or in some cases, likely runs us). They also touched on the rather depressing statistics showing that India's high rate of female engineering enrolment does not translate to a corresponding rate of involvement in the IT world, with barely 30% of the internet user-base being women. Such issues are deep, social questions with a lot to be said on all sides, and while they aren't necessarily technical issues, but technology and especially FOSS can play a part in evolving solutions for them. KK from DFF then threw in an interesting counter-example, where almost 90% of the contributors to GNUKhatha, the financial accounting system being developed as a tally alternative, were women. The meeting ended with the audience breaking up to partake in refreshments, but the discussions did not. The tea session saw lively discussion on the various topics raised during the meeting, and also a lot of planning on how to take some of the ideas forward, especially with identifying avenues for collaboration between ILUG-BOM, DFF and FSMM. We even had a interesting side discussion on the importance of software documentation, with Achilles advocating a moderate approach to encouraging developers to write documentation and KK advocating that developers who didn't write docs should get their pay docked ;-D All in all, a most engaging meeting, full of knowledge exchange and transfer of ideas, and loads of audience interaction. This summary, by its very nature has to leave out a lot of what happened, but i hope that i have touched on the most important and interesting bits of the meet. As always, please feel free to add in any bit that i may have missed and that you feel is important and needs to be placed in the record. P.S. : I believe that after i left, there was another round-chair discussion with a focus on the activities leading up to the Software Freedom Day, and since i wasn't there, i am pasting below, verbatim, Milind's excellent synopsis of the post-meet. -- Milind's Post After the meeting we had an informal discussion about how ILUG-BOM,DFF,FSMM and DBIT can join hands and make free software movement even stronger. It was decided to meet often as the activities was to be done on large scale basis. The primary goal would be reaching schools and colleges of Mumbai and migrate them to free software. There was a discussion on preparation of lab mauals, text books and other open resources in digital form and distributing them to schools. Krishnakant agreed to offer help in accounts and CAD content. Raghu informed everyone about Rushabh's proposal of organizing a workshop for teachers on Software Freedom Day (16th Sept 2017) and take this opportunity to inform about GNULinux and FOSS. Also make them aware about the Migration, why it was important and how the four organizations unitedly willing to help them as a social mission. Everyone supported the proposal. Raghu agreed to make poster and the content would be provided by Siddharth. A quick distribution of other work would be done on separate group made for this workshop where the volunteers would be added. Monthly Meeting Summary - 12th August 2017 The meeting started with Gimp talk by Raghavendra Kamat. In fact everyone wants to play with shapes and colors right from childhood days. Apart from that, basic image processing is everyday need of Digital Age. We often need to work with Image formats and their conversion. Uploading i card size photos in applications, résumé etc. Without appropriate tools and proper guidance this can be too difficult or even impossible for avarage user. Fortunately we had more student attendees. They certainly enjoyed the expert's tips. It is true that anyone can practice and teach elementary gimp usage. But learning basics from a professional artist is really a different experience. We felt this difference when Raghu started experimenting with sample images. He showed how to colorize original black and white image with various color tools. He finally gave a demonstration of masking, where he changed the face of a person in image, keeping the same body. The transformation was so homogeneous that it was impossible to suspect any manipulation. Of course he warned the students not to misuse this skill. In the next session, Joe put a propsal of celebrating Software Freedom Day (16 September). He suggested to arrange an install festival, a hackathon and FOSS exhibition in DBIT. The idea was to invite students and teachers of schools and colleges of Mumbai. Although the idea was welcome by DBIT Profs and students, it could be difficult to arrange everything in a short amount of time. So we put the proposal to DBIT for further discussion. In the last session, Nilesh showed the lab manuals that he has prepared with the help of students. Nilesh and his students team have made a wonderful job. The students had even gone to a few schools. But the principals of junior colleges are not yet confident to migrate. As per his teams feedback, the only problem they faced was Tally and .net. We need to study alternatives to these softwares further. As far as schools are concerned there seems no problem in State or CBSE board. - Milind

Inherit Ownership and Permissions

Dear Friends, In Linux is there a way in which new files or folders created in a directory will inherit the directory's owner and group with the same permissions too? The new files or folders are currently getting created with the user and group of the user who created them. I want all the new data to have user:group and permissions of the parent directory. I have tried different things like suid sgid sticky bit and even mounting the folder with a certain uid, gid and umask but new data does not inherit the same. Thanks and Regards, Rony.

Summary of July 2017 Meetup

Hey linuxers We had an awesome meetup last saturday, here is a brief summary of the meet. Rushabh took a session on frappe framework which is used in Erpnext application. It has all the details and screenshots of the applications UI. Rushabh began by explaining what a web framework is and why they started building a framework instead of using an existing one. You can also read the full story here [https://frappe.io/story] Rushabh explained what is included in the full stack framework and then talked about the UI aspect of the framework, it includes a lot of functionality and one can say it follows the “batteries included” approach of python. It has features such as List views Form views, invoices, mail integration, its own scheduler and background process handler, resource & user managment, kanban style cards similar to trello, calendar, storage like google drive, anything that you can think of which aids ERP. Collaboration is also easy and it has a very granular level of permision settings. Rushabh said that their future goal is making erpnext a standalone application with the help of electron framework. They are also trying to swith to pure javascript and less python. The second part of the meet was discussion with the faculty members about promoting FOSS more in junior colleges. The teachers expressed concerns about training required for migration. There was a lengthy discussion about how to tackle the problem. They also provided us with the existing journals and syllabus. Teachers informed us that the online exams use a tool built on .net and wanted to know how that can be migrated. Riot app and matrix standard for instant messaging, voice & video calling: Free Software, standards based and decentralized replacement for services like WhatsApp, Telegram and Skype. It has one to one or group messaging with end to end encryption for better privacy. Even though WhatsApp claims they do the same, their app being proprietary, we cannot verify their claim. Riot app is Free Software and its source code is available for anyone to verify the claim. Its audited by NCC Group, a professional security research company. With end to end encryption, only the people you share can see your information, the service provider will only see encrypted data, which they can't decrypt without encryption keys. Its like you press the button and lock a car's door, anyone can lock the door, but once locked only the person with the key can open it. Brute forcing would require huge computing power making it practically not possible. We are forced to use WhatsApp even if we don't like it because our friends are on WhatsApp and we are locked to it. With matrix free standard, we can use any app, service or even run our own server. People who try to bridge it to other services or use Free Software clients gets banned by WhatsApp. Imagine this situation, if BSNL were the only mobile service provider and Jio customers could not talk to BSNL customers, would Jio be this popular? Would BSNL and other providers be forced to match Jio offers? We as customers benefited because GSM is a Free Standard and anyone can compete with better services. We can switch providers without losing our contacts. In case of WhatsApp, even if you like Telegram, and use it, you cannot talk to WhatsApp users using Telegram. So it appears who have a choice of apps, in practice that choice is meaningless. Matrix is like GSM standard. You can get a matrix account from any service provider like diasp.in, disroot.org or matrix.org like you can buy your sim card from any provider like BSNL, Airtel, Idea etc You can choose any app, your sim is not locked to a phone model. The most feature rich app is riot, which you can install from riot.im for android, iOS and ant desktop (GNU/Linux, Windows and Mac). There are command line apps like Weechat (with plugin). Pidgin also has some basic support for matrix. Anyone can create a app for matrix standard with better features. Same for the server, anyone can write a server software with better features and performance than the current synapse software. Anyone can take these software and run a matrix server and host it in any country. We have hosted diasp.in in Noida. There are servers located in countries with better privacy laws like Germany. Once you create a matrix account and install riot app, you can join #ilug-bom:matrix.org room. https://matrix.to/#/#ilug-bom:matrix.org Some matrix servers like diasp.in, disroot.org allow registering from their website. Servers like matrix.org and tchncs.de allows registering directly from riot app. You can enter your matrix server in riot app when you login.

June 2017 meeting minutes

Hi linuxers, As per our usual schedule we had a small meetup on 10th June at Don Bosco Institute of Technology. This week Rajeev gave a talk on "How to build a Fedora Workstation Live install media". This was the same method that was used to create a custom image for St. Mary's Schools linux install fest. This time there were fewer attendees due to some members opting out due to work related and personal commitments. We reached D.B.I.T around 2.45 pm, Tayyab Sir was already present and arranged a Lab for us. While Rajeev was busy setting up his laptop, which we nicknamed "Survival Kit", rest of us were having some casual discussion about the install-fest and other happenings in Linux world. Rajeev began the talk by explaining the setup required to build a custom image in fedora. He introduced us to a utility called Mock [1], which is like an evolution of chroot and is used to build live images of Fedora, Centos, Mageia, RHEL & Openstack images. There are various mock config files templates available targeting the above mentioned platforms that we can edit and customize to build our live images. One important thing to note is that the release of fedora image that you are trying to create should match the release that you are running. Rajeev also explained to us the new strategy that fedora uses to provide a faster installation and deployment. Fedora live images are nothing but compressed system images, which are then copied to the target machine, instead of installing the application on the target machine the installation and setup is run while creating the live image itself and the actual install process, which is now handled by the utility called "liveinst", is uncompressing this system image and copying it to the target file system. Inside the mock chroot, the instruction for the install process and system image creation is provided by something called kickstart files [2], which in addition to bash commands has it's own set of syntax. All the instructions such as, name of the user, file system size, repositories to add, name of the applications to include, any custom packages, and post and pre-install scripts that needs to be run is specified in this kickstart file. Based on the instruction of the kickstart file, anaconda (fedora's install utility) installs the packages for you. The livemedia-creator utility is used to combine the all these actions and create a bootable live disk image. Rajeev also showed us how he created the custom plymouth boot animation for using the schools logo. Although what we have reported here is just a quick overview of the session (and may be slightly out of order), Rajeev explained the process very nicely and in a in-depth manner. The session had various casual discussions, which included topics like firewalld, iptables, apt vs dnf for caching updates locally, a bit of emacs vs vim, Flash, DRM and W3C's inability to curtail them :) Overall it was a fun session. Also we thank for D.B.I.T for the space and providing tea and coffee for us. Self hosting Git, IM, VoIP and Screen share

Recently I came across a project https://yunohost.org, It's a FOSS app like cpanel, uses letsencrypt certificates and is extendable by installing apps. I've setup a vps and it's working great! Our server hosts Gogs for git, Baikal for Card/CalDAV and Rainloop as webmail. It comes with many free services installed, includes MetronomeIM ( https://lightwitch.org/metronome) as xmpp server and Mail server (postfix/dovecot). LDAP service is also configured for all apps installed and a single sign on system is also available across hosted services. I was able to login to this self hosted xmpp server using Empathy, Pidgin, AstraChat (Android with VoiP), Conversations (Android) There are xmpp multi user chatrooms (groups) possible. The main practical benefit I see in using MetronomeIM and Empathy is screen sharing. We are able to do free, unlimited screen shares! Revant

Hi everybody, Now that we are having the meetings on every second Saturday. I think we should have a central place to post updates, announcements pictures recorded sessions etc for archiving purpose and also for convenience of others in the group. Do we have a website? I searched but I couldn't find it. I think we have the domain http://ilug-bom.org.in/ which has a note pointing to the mailing list. What do you guys think about creating a website? It can be static, generated via Jekyll or pelican. Rushabh had an idea of hosting from GitHub pages, I think it is good idea if hosting space is a problem. In my opinion having a website will surely help newcomers, to know what kind activities happen in the group, before they subscribe to the mailing list. I also noticed that there is a twitter handle - @ilugbom, although it seems dormant now. Do we know who has the access to this account?
