Error running SERVLET program.

hi, all linuxers........ i have installed sun-java6 and all other required packages required to run java programs, everything compiles and runs fine.For running servlet and JSP i was installing TOMCAT from aptitude package manager which worked succesfully....... but it dint work,i had to manually download tarballs and had to do the installation manually as google is the friend..... but wen i go ahead compiling a servlet program i get "The import javax.servlet cannot be resolved" error, which means that the servlet package are missin, Hope i get some help here, i suspect some servlet API must b required. -- HaVe A Gr8 TiMe, Take Care, Я เรђ เ.

confusing results with off line package installation in ubuntu.

hello every one. I according to some suggestions on this list, tried apt on cd and was very much happy with its results. I even wrote a testifying email a few days back. but now I got a strange result which has confused me. I did try my new "ubuntu extra softwares " as I call it cd on another newly installed machine. I had created this cd using apton cd from my computer. configurations of both the machines are same. now when I added the cd into the apt list with sudo apt-cdrom add, it took it happily. but when I said sudo apt-get update the updates did not happen. the error was "some index files failed to download, ignoring or using the older ones". and then I tried sudo apt-get upgrade which some how went fine. some packages were replaced for sure. I then again did sudo apt-get upgrade just to make sure that all is fine. this time I got a list of few packages which were held back. in the list there was the generic kernel headers and modules. this is very surprising for me as it should have taken these packages for the update/ upgrade as well. I just created the cd yesterday and tried it on a very newly installed machine which did not take any updates from internet. the first update ever on that newly installed machine was from my cd. this further surprised me as there should be no clashing packages. the next stunning hitback I got on my face was when I said sudo apt-get install inkscape. here the message was a streight "borken package ". now I know that it is the same inkscape that runs on my machine and I had tried an older apt on cd made disk on another machine where inkscape was happily installed through the cd. but this new cd gives errors of borken package for all the packages. how can this happen. any idea what must be going wrong? one pointer is that when I create the disk using apt on cd, it excludes some packages may be because they are older updates? not sure though. kindly explain. regards, Krishnakant.

Multimedia Packages CD

All, Most of us install software on our distro (specifically *buntu) using the internet There are odd times, when the hard disk may crash (physical). (or the hdd may blow up due to power surges etc.) For a typical Microsoft Windows user, for freewares, one can ask for setup files from friends and install them back again, after buying a new hard disk ` For *buntu, one would have to download it again from the internet consuming data bytes, for something that was previously downloaded. Therefore, there are several options to it, with one of them suggested by one of my friend. The .deb files of those packages (specifically multimedia ones) could be downloaded for once (from where?) and copied onto a CD. This CD could be used again and again at different places. However, there are few more questions related to this. 1. Apt will and does resolve dependency while downloading / installing packages from the internet. Would there be dependency issues while installing it from CD. If yes, how could this be solved (by copying the required files / libs on to the CD) 2. Does the DVD of *buntu distros have enough multimedia packages which can be installed without the dependency problem? hello all, off late I am finding that good listers who keep on posting interesting material including links are being constantly bashed and discouraged. I am refering particularly to the latest email sent by roni and the subsiquent bashing and flaiming by other lister. look, keep your personal "dis interests " to your self. I remember including myself, many have problems with broadcom devices. recently I had raised an issue about the latest kernel updates that pleasingly surprised me. after this roni sent a link or 2 about the same information so that people on this list facing similar problems could benifit. I think this list is very much for sharing knowledge about gnu/linux and roni did not send any non-interesting stuff just because the flaimer feels so. I believe such kind of responses sends a bad signal to those who like to help others. pleasingly surprised with vifi on compaq nx7300

hello all and roni in particular. roni, if you remember we tried hard to get the vifi working on my compaq laptop at your house. today after I updated ubuntu feisty I find it perfectly working out of the box! now my only question is that if I happen to format the laptop any time, wil just the updates help me or will I also need to install that broad com driver the way we both did? I want to know from any one who has tried broadcom if linux comes with free modules in the latest kernel? what I am really confused is the fact that just an update fixt my vifi problem. so is this a pure linux driver that has done the trick or is it a combination of the firmware and the kernel? can some one answer this? by the way in the updates list I found that the kernel modules were included and this time around the system demanded a reboot after the updates were applied. this implies that it was not a software update but a serious change to the kernel. regards, Krishnakant.

There have also been ubiquitous wikipedia links all over the place about POSIX, microkernels etc etc etc. All of which led me to sit a give the entire microkernel concept an another look. Hello All, The recent war of distros on our list made me wonder if the Ubuntu OS available with all desktops, like a complete selective installation just like Mandriva or Fedora? I must say Mandriva's installer is very good as it allows fine tuning devices before the installation begins. U, Ku, Edu and X makers could come together to make this complete distro. Call for proposals: RGF-Sarai, CSDS, short-term FLOSS fellowships 1 Introduction The Sarai programme of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi (http://www.sarai. net) is pleased to announce fellowships for projects related to Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) activities. This year, we have partnered with the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) who are providing support for work in the specific area of computing, and localisation in five Indian languages, namely, Assamese, Hindi, Kashmiri, Oriya, and Urdu. We also invite proposals from projects in other FLOSS areas, especially ones that are relevant to educational, social, and community needs. Any project that meets the criteria given below is eligible for the fellowships, but we are particularly interested in: o Indian language computing, including work on fonts, rendering, locales, input methods, spell-checking, etc., as well as in advanced technologies like OCR, handwriting recognition, and speech-to-text. o Localisation into Indian languages of user interfaces, and translation of help documents for FLOSS applications. o In the interest of sustained development, we would like to see the enhancement of, and extensions for projects funded as part of past Sarai FLOSS fellowships. In particular, we draw attention to NewsRack (http://newsrack.in), Hindawi (http://www.indicybers.com), and ApnaOpus (http://apnaopus.var.cc). o Documentation for users of FLOSS tools, particularly in the area of Indian language computing. The production of video tutorials would be welcome. o Development of graphics, multimedia, and publishing tools. This would include applications for audio/video editing, animation, and desktop publishing. Enhancement of existing FLOSS tools is especially encouraged. o Putting together, distributing, and supporting a complete Indian language distribution, using FLOSS operating systems, and tools. o Collaboration software, and groupware solutions. o Writing Linux device drivers, and front-ends for common hardware, such as wireless cards, graphics cards, scanners, and printers. The other significant difference from past practice is that we will be asking for more of a collaborative approach from the fellows, both among one another, and with people at Sarai. The collaboration need not be in the actual development, but can consist of an ongoing conversation about one's work, its direction, and current status. While this has been an implicit expectation in the past, this time we are making the requirement explicit. The exact details of these will be worked out with the selected fellows, but will include things like discussions over IRC, email, and postings on the Sarai Project Resource Centre (PRC) mailing list. Fellows will also be asked to prepare a timeline for the projects, with intermediate milestones, and will be expected to adhere to them. 2 Applying for the fellowships We invite students, developers, researchers, and practitioners interested in the FLOSS arena to apply for the fellowships. While there is no prescribed format for the applications, we expect them to be in sufficient detail for a reviewer to sensibly evaluate them. Attention to details, such as a plan of work that addresses what is possible to accomplish within the limited project period, a projection of how the work might be continued after that, and a discussion of the possible impact of the project, is strongly recommended. In particular, we will look favourably on projects aimed at eventual deployment, rather than development per se. Please mail your application, along with a resume, to floss at sarai.net , with the subject line of "RGF-Sarai FLOSS fellowships". As this information is intended to be public, also subscribe to the PRC mailing list at https://mail.sarai.net/mailman/listinfo/prc, and post a copy there, failing which your final proposal will be forwarded there by one of us. install ubuntu without cdrom

hi i need to install ubuntu on a PIII laptop of which the cdrom drive is bad the laptop does not support booting from external usb cdroms in windows world i would have removed the laptop hard disk and connected it to other pc make it bootable and transfer the setup cab files on to it , put it back on the laptop and run setup but i a dont know how it can be done in linux can i connect this hard disk to some other machine install ubuntu and then put it back in the laptop and then would ubuntu re-detect all the hardware or any other idea help ?? thanks regards

Third time loss of luser account

Hi, I have had a prety bad experience with Mandriva 07.I have lost THREE luser accounts and all my docs,pics and music twice coz the third time today,I used a Knoppix 5.0 live CD.The typical error message is that the $HOME/._dmrc file or something like that is being ignored coz either i either don't own my HOME or it does not exist at all! Another paradox is that when I login to mandriva with root (/root) as my home directory,my /home is empty except for an empty lost+found folder but when I browse to the same location thru the Knoppix live CD,it showed me my stuff though it was inaccessible to me.I 'su'ed to root in Konsole in live CD,chowned the Home folder,umounted the D: partition and mounted it with - w.Though I now have all my stuff safely burned onto a CD,can someone please help me out of this repetitive problem?Also,can someone help with a proper and complete installation of Mandriva on my system(personal presence would be preferred ;-)). Yes their primary goal is giving GNU/Linux to the masses and yes they do make freedom secondary. Only making freedom secondary does NOT imply that they ignore it all together. You cannot compare them to a M$. - "Ubuntu is and always will be free of charge." there is no guarantee that it will remain Free Software After the M$ Novell deal and a not fully ready GPL v3 yet, how many projects can guarantee that they will remain Free Software? - On the contrary, they have clearly stated their willingness to include non-free softwares in their distribution. They do include proprietary drivers so new users can use the system, but other than that what other non free software are they packaging into Ubuntu? - They don't believe in Free Software.
