Kubuntu 6.10 Problem with shared printing

Hello All, I am using Kubuntu 6.10 as my local printing machine and its cupsd.conf is as below. However, my laptop Kubuntu 6.06 connected through wired lan is not able to 'see' this printer. I uninstalled the firestarter firewall but still no result. Lpstat -a on server shows this....."HP610C accepting requests since Sat 21 Apr 2007 12:03:19 PM IST" Where could the problem be? What commands could I try in the client machines to 'see' the printer? In the client's browser, 'server_ip_address:631' shows the printer. Any packages I could be missing? In Sarge I followed online instructions from some site and was able to print from the laptop. But no other distro after that could duplicate the same. I manually added the shared printer in the client machine but it does not pass on print jobs to the server. This is my cupsd.conf Any help will be appreciated. It seems my kid brother had played around with group and membership settings I saw following in log kdm: :0[3833]: saving groups failed: Invalid argument kdm: :0[3833]: Client start failed kdm: :0[3833]: restoring groups failed: Invalid argument Then I just casually checked in users and groups configuration and found the problem. raspppoe - alternative? Intel 810 - Ubuntu?

List, I tried Ubuntu 6.06 on one of my friend's computer. His comptuer's specs are Intel Pentium III 866 MHz Intel 810 - Motherboard 256 MB of RAM 120 GB Hdd (80 + 20) HP monitor Peripherals (essentail kbd, mouse, samsung CD-RW drive) Though the Live CD worked well without problems, I actually couldn't connect to internet. This is because, his ISP is Exatt Net and the provider uses raspppoe (for authentication, I guess. I don't know what sort of internet connection this is). Assuming that this connection was pppoe, I tried running pppoe on the Live CD, and found that it isn't available in the Live CD. (Is this what I was supposed to do? ) Tried Knoppix for the same, but Knoppix couldn't figure out the monitor and the screen was showing a series of varied color horizontal lines, after bootup. Is there any other Live CD, that would have pppoe on its Live CD to try and connect to his internet. [ANN] NRC-FOSS node in mumbai

hi, we have finalised arrangements to host the NRC-FOSS node in mumbai at VJTI. VJTI is giving us a lab with 30 machines and space for holding meetings, seminars, classes etc as well as an office. The node will be coordinated by Professor Jitendra Shah from the VJTI end and Mrugesh Karnik from the community end. Mrugesh is currently working along with Pradeepto, Vihan and Anurag on this. We are sure that many more community people will come forward to support this. The facilities will be available for any foss activity including lug, fsug meetings, seminars, course etc etc. The node will also help coordinate spreading of FOSS in colleges and schools in the state as well as help NRC-FOSS in it's task of getting FOSS into the curriculum of engineering colleges in the state. KDM Login Problem

I am using FC5. I have upgraded to latest version of kdebase and kdebase-kdm, from kde-redhat rpms. The problem when I enter my username and password in KDM , it just drops me back to the same KDM screen , instead of my KDE desktop. Root can login , and also a new test user I created was able to login. With GDM , I can login to both KDE and Gnome. WIth KDM i cant login to anything. I have following version of kdebase and other rpms.. kdebase-3.5.6-3.fc5 kdebase-kdm-3.5.6-3.fc5 kde-settings-3.5-18.fc5 kde-settings-kdm-3.5-18.fc5 Please help....calling all linux experts.. -- The Future is Open...The Future is LINUX

GCC 4.0 (C Compiler) on Kubuntu 6.06

List, I had to install GCC C compiler in Kubuntu 6.06, and found that it isn't installed with the default setup. I found out that GCC 4.0 base system (whatever that is) is installed. I used Adept to install GCC C compiler, assuming it would setup everything that I need to run C programs. You can run the command (sudo apt-get install gcc-4.0) to install GNU C compiler. Assuming that the installation of the compiler is with all the essential parts to run C programs, I wrote the traditional "HelloWorld" program and compiled it, also passing a parameter to generate a specific output file. The result: "Error: error: stdio.h: No such file or directory" Logged on to the #gcc channel on IRC and I was told to install libc6-dev. (sudo apt-get install libc6-dev) Now, this is just the C libraries. There are few other packages that would have to be installed for additional support of programming languages. What next? Compiled and Executed the HelloWorld Program. Hope this experience helps, newbies like me. :) For C++, I guess one needs libstdc++6-4.0-dev. For those with loads of data transfer capabilites (no caps) can use the following command sudo apt-get install build-essentail. Ubuntu update-manager makes system unresponsive for large updates

Hi all, I am running on ubuntu gutsy without any problems for a while. One of the things i encountered, was the heavy load the update process can put onto your system making it almost freeze. Well for now I do this via cli - sudo nice -n 19 apt-get update sudo nice -n 19 apt-get dist-upgrade This leaves my system upgraded and usable in the time when its upgrading. Any thoughts on how I can make the update-manager from ubuntu play nice ? C

Like many users, Jim Klein realized in 2003 that NetWare was a "dead-end street" and was looking for alternatives. List, I have added a small How-To on the wiki about composing / viewing plain text emails using Web Based Yahoo! Mail. http://db.glug-bom.org/wiki/index.php/Plaintext_Emails This may not be useful for many (active) on the list, because, I assume most use a email client! However, I believe, there are newbies entering the world of GNU/Linux everyday, and finding out these mailing lists and sending off emails to the list. Unknowingly, the send HTML emails, which are blocked for obvious reasons. Therefore, this How-To is aimed at newbies to send plain text emails to the list. On the train two days back, I met an MTNL staffer who was very loyal and vociferous about MTNL standards. He told me that I should apply for a very cheap Garuda CDMA, Rs 1,000 for two year rent free service and Rs 1,000 free talktime, excellent connectivity (he said). Hello List, Logged on to Triband's home page today, and the marquee scrolling on their page (just below the flash animation) says, "For best Triband Usage ... Linux O. S. with LAN port..." (Did someone notice this before me?) So, their department (dealing with Triband) realizes that there are individuals who use Triband with a Linux distro! All that they have to do now, is introduce Unlimited plans at more reasonable rates (read 'lower') for users. (hehe, this must be on so many wishlists ;) ) But I wonder, what sort of a support will they provide for GNU/Linux users? Distro-specific or will they ask users to do "command-line" tasks for configuring, in case the user decides to switch to manual configuration. Shell Script for resizing an array of images

Hello List, I had a task of resizing more than 30 images one by one (of sizes as large as 3000 x 2000 pixels or a little lesser than that) to a size 640 x 480 pixels. I'm sure, a lot of you click high quality photos (images of size > than 1 MB) and want to resize them to send it through email, say as a zip file (if the receiver wants a copy of the photos). One can upload the photographs to a photo-sharing website, but one wouldn't have to log on everytime to view / show the photos. I used the command line tool called "convert " (by ImageMagick) to convert them. Though I knew, I could play with files in shell scripts I didn't know anything about the syntax. So, I searched and found this document http://tldp.org/linuxfocus/English/July2001/article211.shtml Understood the syntax on the page, and wrote a script to complete the above mentioned task. #!/bin/sh for f in $*; do convert -resize 640x480 $f t-$f done I have one question. Is the $* is for argument number (or its type) for the file that would have to be converted? There's one thing that I noted while this script was executing. The processor usage was around 93-100 % and the memory usage was jumping up and down. screen resolution drops down to 640 * 480 after monitor change

hi after installation if i change my monitor on ubuntu 7.04 it does not take the resolution higher than 640 * 480 but the monitor is capable of higher resolutions if i switch back to the original monitor on which the installation was done then it allows me to increase the resolution please help , how do i tell ubuntu desktop to ignore the monitor regards kamal

[OT] Airtel Broadband. Demand ADSL with router.

Hello All, A client of mine subscribed to Airtel Broadband. I told the client to insist on an ADSL modem with router. This is like the self contained MTNL modem. Its advantage over the regular Airtel modems is that it does not need a pc to dial pppoe. The router ensures that the pcs are not directly exposed to the net and no pc needs to be dedicated as a server. The Airtel guy who came to install did not understand the idea first and after some beating about the bush, said that he will have to contact his tech. guys. Next day, they installed the wanted unit. So if you are using Airtel, you can insist on the independent modem cum dialer. If your net is down, at least they won't blame your pc or its interfaces. -- Regards, Rony. Knock Knock Who's There? Mandrake 2007

Hello All, Having heard a lot about Mandriva 2007, I decided to try it out on my laptop. It loaded well. Before actual install, some device configurations were necessary to be done like display driver, boot manager (changing lilo to grub), and some minor settings. Installation was smooth. It detected everything except my wireless card but it gave a message with a url to download certain firmware packages and they (*.fw) were downloaded and saved to the /lib/firmware directory. However wireless setup was a Pain..ITA. There was no direct link to up/down the interface and its a long route via 'configure your computer'. The kde wireless manager is lousy compared to the one in Kubuntu. At one time I had to use command line to control the interface. However even though verything was setup in the ifcfg-eth1 file, sometimes the sudo ifup eth1 command would not work properly. The software updater cannot find any repo site. On the web too I found some mirror sites but no description to manually add them to the package manager. I have yet to try out multimedia. In short, Kubuntu is much easier to configure and setup compared to Mandriva. "And the first prize goes to ....Kubuntu". Yeeaay. hello all, I am doing an installation of a few computers with orca (the screen reader) for blind people. it is at a very remote village where internet is not very strong. I have to do a apt-get install for gnome-common and also apt-get build-dep gnome-orca. both this commands connect to the internet and need to download the packages. now what I am trying to understand is whether dvd is worth the download? will gnome-common be available on the dvd? I am aware that orca is indeed available so no worrys. I am only worried about the dependencies which apt-get downloads from internet. if dvd has most of what is on the web based repositories, then my requirements will be fulfilled and to make the computers accessible, I wont need internet. regards, Krishnakant.

hi i want to install kde on about 25 hosts on which ubuntu 7.04 is already installed i use apt-get install kubuntu-desktop to install kde it is a 198 mb download i dont want to download 198 mb on each host can i download on one location and use it to install kubuntu on all desktops regards kamal
