problem with kernel compilation

JSP problem with Firefox

Hello All, I was filling out the online passport registration form and had problems with the date field. After the focus was moved to any other field, the last digit of the date would get cut. You can try it out on the link below. https://passport.gov.in/pms/OnlineRegistration.jsp Even reducing the date from 4 to 2 characters show the same result. Even in windows the same problem existed in firefox. The only way it worked was in IE7. (It may be working in IE6 too but I don't have it). Is there a work around for this? I am planning to write to the Delhi office that may be in charge of the website. You could write too. -- Regards, Rony.

GSoC/KDE-2007 and our lug member

Hi, I am sure most of us know about the annual event Google Summer Of Code. Like past years The KDE Project participated this year even. Actually I had posted about the event when it was kicked off this year. Anyways, results were declared sometime back and KDE got some 40[1] [2] slots from Google. But for me the bigger and happier news is that a lot of Indians participated this year and quite a few them submitted good proposals. There were 216 eligible proposals in all that were submitted to The KDE Project. And the news that is even more happier and bigger is that one of the chosen candidates is from our ``Amchi Mumbai" even - Sharan Rao. Some of us surely must have seen him / met him at LUG meets or otherwise. Sharan has been an occasional contributor to K3B since last year. Sharan's proposal about Umbrello was happily selected by mentors - I say this because I was present at the meeting and I noticed how proposals were judged strictly by core KDE devs. I think, I have mentioned before how being a ``actual" contributor helps in such cases because they already have seen your code. And more importantly, a good proposal does it job really well. Sharan's proposal was really good, more importantly something he thought all by himself and was completely out of the box and mentors didnot even put forth that in the stock ideas. All he did was found a cool application and found what it was lacking and made a good proposal around it. To be fair to other candidates, I must admit most of the 40 accepted proposals were just like that of Sharan. And all such proposals just passed with flying colours even if there was a discussion/debate on pros and cons of the proposals. If there were only disputes, it was due to certain conflicting proposals or duplicate proposals for the same idea, in which case the most suitable candidate was selected which ofcourse was measured by a scale called as - "who show most enthusiasm and maybe has submitted most patches or proposal was very very strong". It was taken care that proposal was worth atleast 30+ hours per week of work and was even informed to student if he had other ideas. Anything less and the candidate was questioned. I was sort of happy and pleasantly surprised watching mentors calling a spade a spade or some such metaphor. And since I have spoken to personally ( or heard about ) quite a few candidates this year, the common thing was their enthusiasm and willingness - be it Mike Authur, Marcus Hanwell or Sharan or anybody else. Anirudh Ramesh (based in Singapore) and Piyush Verma (Delhi based) are the other Indians in the list. Good luck to you both. Do well. Also heartiest congratulaltions to other members of the list who have been selected as well for other projects. Good wishes to all of you. Sharan, dude you rock! Congratulations and loads of good wishes. And one guy whom I really need to thank is our beloved admin - Anurag - who was instrumental in helping me get introduced to ( and meet ) Sharan ( - my favourite twit, is what I like to call him ) sometime Feb '06 or so. PXE Boot

Hello Friends, I configured ltsp for PXE Boot in Fedora 5 . But when i try to boot from Client pc through PXE Boot i got error message: Doing the pivot_root pivot_root: pivot_root: No such file or directory Mounting the devfs filesystem mount: Mounting /devfs on /dev failed: device or resource busy Running /sbin/init exec: /sbin/init: no such file or directory Kernel Panic : Attempted to kill init! Note:- My client pc have onboard LAN with Boot Rom supporting. Also my pc have in which i configured ltsp support Boot Rom. I also try with RHEL ES 4 but i face same problem. Do i need an external PXE Boot lan card for my client PC. Pls. help me & give me solution friends. Wireless free information system successfully setup.

Hello All, On Saturday 14th April 2007 we successfully setup the wireless mesh running the free information server. This time the OLSR protocol was also loaded into 2 laptops that acted as additional nodes. The server machine with Apache2 was loaded with CD and DVD isos in the /var/www/ folder and we could visit the machine through the mesh and access the web page with all the isos. So finally we were having tea in the canteen and downloading Linux isos on our laptops. The linux laptop got a speed of 1.2 Mbps to 800 Kbps and the windows laptop got abot 500 Kbps. We can work on the speed part. What a nice day to start the free information network. It was the 'Jayanti' of Dr. Ambedkar who wanted to empower the people with freedom and knowledge. Old distros cds! Interested?

Hey, I have a few old Kubuntu CDs and few new ones even lying around. Where old = 5.10 and new = 6.10. I have some ed/ubuntu - 6.10 as well. Now if anybody is interested please ping me offlist, we can arrange a meeting or meet during a lug meet or some such and I can give you the cds then. And before somebody says - ohhhh those are old, why would I need those? Umm, you think. maybe old hardware or whatever. I am sure there might be some use other than distributing those to autorickshaw drivers in Panvel. Btw, those 5.10 Kubuntu CDs, were sent directly by Jonathan Riddell because those days there was no shipit for kubuntu or whatever. Cheers! Wireless Mesh - Progress and success

However, if we (GLUG-BOM members) do plan to meet up, I'll request you to come up with resources (GNU/Linux, Free documents etc.) that can be shared across the mesh network and accessible to those who want them. (atleast indirectly). We had two mesh clients (if that is the correct terminology, technically) as Sabayon Linux on one laptop and Microsoft Windows XP on another and tried downloading distros (600 MB and above) with speeds ranging from 300 KiloBytes / second - 700 KB / second. Hidden bots in GLUG-BOM Wiki?

Hello List, Apparently, I have been notified of changes to wiki pages constantly by some unknown / unregistered usernames who don't seem to change anything on the page (according to the page history). Does this indicate that there are hidden bots attacking the wiki or is it simply something else that I am unaware of? Any wikipedian (on this list) aware of what it could be? wireless mesh at hbcse successfully done

Hi all, particularly those who attended the workshop on 31st March and 1st April, and last saturday Rony, Jtd resumed the work. Status: Last saturday we successfully managed to get the mesh working. Actually the mesh works out of the box like a charm. We only used several of our legacy skills and actually wasted lot of time. But at the end every moment spent was useful. We now know exactly what to communicate to others who wish to setup such a mesh (mess ;-) successfully. The dhcp on wireless was not working as of Saturday, but today afternoon I tried based on a reply from the olsr-users mailing list. Again it worked out of the box. What I did: installed a package called 'freifunk-dnsmasq', restarted it. Now we see an additional parameter on the web interface called OLSR-DHCP: This is where we give the DHCP share of the mesh network (not the lan network). thats it. Now we have a working mesh in the campus. I will write documentation here: http://fci.wikia.com/wiki/WirelessMesh. Please add to everything I missed out. I will also upload few screen shots so that new teams setting it up will find it useful. Next step: Prepare a server (Rony contributed a server) and dump useful resources there for community use. Next time, gluggers can walk into our campus and sit in our lounge with a laptop and takeaway what the server has. If we get a list of goodies that the community needs we will begin archiving them. So send such a request to glab(a)hbcse.tifr.res.in. we will download them during the night time and leave it one the server. Nagarjuna

browser cant resolve domain names .....

Hi list , I have a Fedora Core 6 on my machine. I have a DSL 502T and a 'Realtek ' ethernet card , When I connect to the DSL router via DHCP , I can ping any domain name . however I am not able to browse the web through any of web-browsers .I have to put in IP addresses explicitly into the browser.No domain names are getting resolved. Debian Etch DVD Set

Vihan, I currently have it being downloaded, maybe you can do dvd 2 / dvd 3. Its 38% percent done since last night when I started. I think I should have it in the next 2 days odd. I could send you a copy if you want. So i strongly suggest you work on disc 2 first. I am trying to get one of my friends to pitch in and do disc 3 if possible. Once I have all the discs, I can send 1 copy to nagarjuna as well, so he can directly dump it on the server. TIFR is like 10 mins away for me, else courier zindabad. As of the site, I dont think I have seen it since maybe 3-4 years, if not more. I know it has errors, it was written for php3 maybe the beginning of php4. Just running out of time of updating my own stuff. As mentioned, it was for IE5.5, thats pretty old. Regards, Satish

All assignments are permanent, full time and come with the govt requirements for benefits etc. Location: We are looking for people based in Pune, Delhi and Chennai as a base. Auto-enable usbnet device on link startup

Hi, This is something I noticed while I was playing around with my Triband connection on USB. If I start (or reboot) my router after my computer has started, the network interface for the USB connection is detected but not enabled automatically. I have to manually up the interface. I guess this behaviour is expected under debian since network configuration (upping of interfaces) takes place only at startup through /etc/init.d/networking. Any network devices detected after startup will be configured but not enabled. Shouldn't default behaviour be to simply enable the interface if it is defined as auto in /etc/network/interfaces? -- Siddhesh Poyarekar http://siddhesh.tk

I have had experience using a 'gateway' which never forwarded anything, so make sure that the sysadmin is not lying and the gateway is actually forwarding the traffic. Checking this is a bit dicey, and depends if there is any firewall that is blocking traffic bound to specific ports and so on. Here are a few things you can try: 1. $ ping google.com 2. Try using an email client like Mutt, Thunderbird, KMail and see if you can send and receive mail or not. If the SMTP and/or POP3 traffic is blocked this would not work. 3. Disable the proxy in the Web browser (eg., Firefox), and try to visit any site. Again if port 80 or 443 traffic is being blocked or not forwarded, this would not work. 4. Try using Gaim. Do not set any proxy, and try to log into Yahoo!, Jabber, or IRC. 5. Try SSH, without using any HTTP proxy tunnelling tool (like Corkscrew). If you have not heard about tunnelling, then most likely you do not have a any such tool. Just do something like: $ ssh foo(a)external.server Knowing your ultimate aim would have been helpful. Protecting ubuntu against fork bombs

Hi all, An old article caught my eye - http://www.securityfocus.com/columnists/308 It talks about the way linux systems react to a fork bomb and surprisingly it is by freezing stiff. Sadly most distros seem to freeze as the limits are meant to maximize performance and not make it secure, even Ubuntu. Can someone shed light on what knobs/limits to tweak to deal with this "problem" ? regards, C

The above video demonstrates that .ani files used in Vista for animated cursors can be exploited by a remote server (when a URL is visited). (exploited for remote access to files) For Internet Explorer 7 (default installation with Vista), a connection is established, but since Internet Explorer is in protected mode, it won't allow harfmful priveleges on system files. However, a higher concern is for Firefox users, because it uses the same windows component to process this request, but doesn't have a defined modes of access. (No modes like the ones in IE7). I *haven't* tried this, nor do I know how a TCP packet is used in the above connection, (and what sort of packet) for this attack. So, does Firefox need some enhancements of functioning independently of Windows components? OLSR @ HBCSE

Hello guys, I thought of a few issues on my way back home. Firstly, if you want to edit stuff like nvram settings or anything else not available in the GUI, its apparently done via the /etc/local.* files. The DHCP server configuration for example, was done in /etc/local.udhcpd.conf or something similar. Just something to keep in mind before hacking the init scripts. Secondly, I read this: http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3626#page-51 The cron script that was edited to prevent the default gw route loss (/usr/sbin/cron.minutely original at /usr/sbin/cron.minutely.orig) could have been trying to achieve this: http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3626#page-54 Please run a diff to make sure. But I don't think it should be kept the way it is in the original file either. Another thing. If it is necessary to find out exactly which node assigned the ip to the client, in case of multiple DHCP servers, maybe interface aliases can be used to define two different subnets. Run DHCP server on the aliases to lease ips in two different subnets. Also, apparently OLSR traffic happens on UDP port 698. Hi, I have RHEL 4, httpd 2.0.52-9.ent. I have setup local webserver. When I am opening any .html page, the error log is showing "Directory index forbidden by rule: /var/www/" and when I am trying to open .php pages, the error log is showing "child pid 10500 exit signal Segmentation fault" and the blank page is displayed. Wireless Workshop at HBCSE

Hello All, I had a talk with Dr. Nagarjuna about the wireless gnu/linux download idea and it was decided that it should not be restricted to downloads of CD isos alone but it should be a wireless resource hub that will allow anyone to freely access the knowledge base with no internet restrictions. It should be installed in schools, colleges and other public places in the villages and towns all over India. It will act as a free knowledge and information hub. People can simply access whatever information they are looking for and for those who don't have laptops, they can simply walk into a knowledge cafe and save their required data on a recording media. As a technology demonstrator, at the HBCSE, the plan is to setup a local wireless mesh of multiple APs that will provide a wide access range and then install the server that will provide the data to be freely downloaded. The process will be documented so that it can be emulated in other schools and colleges. The day for setup will be a Saturday and timing will be after 5.30 pm, next week. So we need 2 to 3 people to help in setting it up. Once it is setup, we can have a session where everyone bring their laptops to do the downloads. Those who don't want to bring a laptop can bring blank cds that can be recorded during the session.
