Printing problem on boss-linux

Hi, In my efforts to push FOSS in schools and colleges, I am distributing free and open source softwares in schools and colleges. All projects are uploaded on source forge. However I am facing some printing problem executing JAVA code on bosslinux. I usually print output directly on A4 paper and suppress print dialog. I wrote the program before I knew BOSS and was working nicely on windows. On BOSS, the program executes properly but the default output comes on letter size instead of A4. This trims some left, right, top and bottom content. I tried various code snippets to pro grammatically set the paper A4 but it does not work. I am using cups-pdf and the pdf print is also having the same problem. I thought first that it was a problem specific to boss but a friend of mine sent me this. =================== [Forwarded from Sanjay Patil] Yes, see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=88286#c12 The crucial information is the geographical location, i.e. the second part of a locale name, for example: en_GB is English for Great Britain => A4 paper en_US is English for United States => Letter paper I think that without an existing geographical location (in particular for "C" or "POSIX") it is just not possible to set another paper size than what is the default in the PPD. Or the fallback should be at least "A4" (if avialable in the PPD) because I think that A4 paper is more often used in the whole world than Letter. ============================== Has anybody come across this. Will you please run the following java code on any other linux version and let me know how it works or send me the pdf output ? I have already set the default data so just run the Java file and press the [Print Attendance] button. You will get 23 page document. Help required in installing Ubuntu alongside Windows 10

Hi, I have a Windows 10 PC with was installed in 'legacy' mode (not EFI). I shrunk my C: to create free space of 25Gb for Ubuntu. I created a 64 bit Ubuntu bootable USB pendrive. For booting from the pendrive, I select the boot mode at the BIOS splash screen I have tried both 'USB drive' and 'EFI-USB-drive'. I tried to install Ubuntu 15.1 but the free space is always marked 'unusable'. Before this I'd got a warning that the installation was started in EFI mode, but target installation is non-EFI, and if I force it I won't be able to switch OSs. But this warning is not appearing subsequently, only my freed partiton is showing 'unusable'. Is there a way install Ubuntu into the created free space in such a situation? WHY BOSS ? My Strategy may be wrong but ...

Hi all, My strategy may not be acceptable to IT experts. May be because I am a teacher and not a software professional. But I have realized how we are being exploited by proprietary giants. I would think promoting FOSS is not my cup of tea. So I waited several years with the hope that FOSS will be everywhere soon. But that was a mistake. I thought there were experts all from IIT, TIFR and IISC. They are all capable of bringing FOSS and will make our country proud and digitally independent. But my observation taught me that linux has become a style statement. Working on terminal was considered as difficult and something that a common man should not do and stick to Windows. All young experts (few exceptions) are now looking for Google, Oracle packages rather than working in villages and teaching poor people. The fight now has come to a common man like me who cannot speak in technical jargons like you but works little bit on computers. The problem seemed political and not which linux is good or bad. It is a political fight and not technical so your question which is better seems irrelevant to me. How we can attack those hard skin politicians is my problem. You take a round in Mantralaya and you will observe that almost everyone is paid by Mircrosoft. In a FOSS workshop in IIT, I saw a FOSS expert (fed by government and Microsoft) giving polished lectures and saying that today we can write an operating system in a couple of days. A student asked, sir how many OS's have you written ? That was quite an embarrassing question for him ! I heard about BOSS on 31 Jan 2015. I searched on internet and was shocked ! It was 2006 when BOSS started. I saw government itself fooling people by praising BOSS everywhere but in small news papers and also not willing to implement it. The name BHARAT is a magical name. So on 31 Jan 15, I decided to exploit it. Perhaps that is the strongest point of my activity. I just checked that BOSS is workable. I am a common man and I have been using BOSS 5.0 (Anokha) straight 10 months without touching windows, doing all the work and little programing. Of course without anti virus. So I can show bharat proudly on my laptop or desktop at my home and in my workplace (SIWS college) doing all regular work. Showing Tiranga waving on it ! It is a child of our motherland (don't be upset, I know it is not fully Indian but for a common man I do say it). Even if her child is ugly, mother still loves it. Mother will never discard her child but nourish it accepting as it is. That is my simple view and surprisingly it works as I expected. If you give thousand lectures on FOSS. People will clap and give you flowers and thats all. If there are only lectures, Microsoft will arrange parties one after the other. They are not at all worried. But I am doing installations and that is too in education institutes It is something that Microsoft won't like. See my condition - Use free Result software only after installing BOSS in your school or college on at least two computers and also work is to be done on BOSS only. We have already tested the whole result process on BOSS. (Also for other linux versions, there is a chance that school/college heads may refuse installing other OS. But Bharat as an official government OS and also recommended for schools, they cannot openly resist it, if teachers demand) We cannot install BOSS on all PC's simply because Microsoft product names are there in syllabus. So on the other hand, my PIL exactly prays that - remove proprietary names from curriculum. Government will try to prolong the PIL. But I am prepared for that also. I am waiting for politicians to pronounce BHARAT, they have to do it (reluctantly) because it is a part of "make in india". I have done correspondence with PMO requesting to advertise BOSS on television since BOSS is a part of "Make in India". They are not responding and also not denying my request ! Another RTI is ready to be filed in a couple of weeks to PMO as a part of my fight. Note that I can collect important government documents supporting BOSS. Which is not possible for other linux flavors. Now that government has official support for boss, said that it is perfect, (I have official letters from government) so that will work nicely in court not the reality. If I fight for Ubuntu or FOSS in general, I am not going to win. For example, they will bring thousand ( paid) experts claiming in court that Ubuntu is inferior to Windows. They will not dare to say Bharat is bad and Microsoft is good in public, it will affect their political TRP ! Also their own documents (incorrectly !) say that BHARAT is the best system in the world ! But it is going to work in the court. Our legal system is like that. I think I am going to trap them in their own net. My lawyer Shree V P Patil is a retired justice (72). He is a great person. At this age he is working with me day and night without charging any fees. When he says that we are surely going to win, certainly that makes some sense ! My aim is clear. Removing proprietary software from this country, literally by any means, boss or otherwise. After that we will discuss which linux flavour to use or use different falvors for different work etc. You people can decide better than me. I am just unable to answer your technical questions. Your suggestions may not be in accordance with my plan, implement them in your own way. I am really happy. If you believe in my path, please do join us. For the time being, BOSS is a perfect partner for me and may be to a common man like me. I am going to fight. I am just doing my duty as a teacher, nothing else. There are forks and we all are free to choose any. regards and best of luck. Milind

Hello everyone, Jordan Hubbard (co-creator) of FreeBSD was here couple of weeks ago to talk on open source. He had lots of wisdom + pragmatic advice on open source. What really got me was the fact that he was reading and writing thousands of emails a day at the peak of his involvement. We always tend to under-estimate the amount of energy put in by the founding members / core teams of successful projects. what does ilug-bom stand for?

hello, me being one of the founding members of the ilug-bom group find it difficult to imagine that there needs to be a separate group to manage meetups for gnu/linux activities. we started ilug-bom under the able leadership of dr. nagarjuna with the explicit goal of unifying all efforts conducted towards discussion and advocacy of gnu/linux in and around mumbai. i believe we as a group have been in existence since 1997~98 and have had a great term in the earlier years, just can't understand why it has slacked off big time now. is it because of an over abundance of material available via a simple google search? or is it because someone did something terribly wrong along the way that youngsters found it necessary to diverge and form newer, independent groups? personally, i have been away for a really long time due to health issues, and then, when i did return around 1.5~2 years back, everything seemed so weird and desolate that i could not figure out the reasons. hope we all can regroup and move forward as a single unit and clear goal of doing what we are going to do here-on. perhaps, as dinesh shah had once mentioned, we lack a formal vision and mission statement for our existance. looking forward to more activity in a focused manner. best regards, ~mayuresh

We had one 3D Printer, power and hand tools that were donated by well-wishers. We had a handful of members that gathered to build tables, simple machines and toyed around with electronics. People started to share knowledge and materials to build projects together." Challenges The good part is that we’ve ignited the Maker Movement in India. The bad part — we’ve lost the space we’ve called home for the last six months. The design school that let us use a portion of their cafeteria for our activities needs us to vacate. We have till August 31. In order to continue feeding the hungry community of Makers, we need to find a new space to rent, and soon! Hi, I've been mostly with laptops and AiOs till date, all failed prematurely (actually, soon after the warranty period). Environmental conditions in my area (highly corrosive air; as I live right next to a creek) lead to internals being damaged faster than expected. Have decided to not waste a lot of money any more, would prefer to go for lower costing assembled desktops in the range of INR. 20 ~ 25 thousand. I solicit suggestions and recommendations for a good hardware configuration. Line of work is mostly Web software (primarily JavaScript), using multiple browsers (Firefox, Chrome) and SublimeText. Changed router, now Static IP configured raspberry pi not connecting.

Hi, I have a raspberry pi, configured with a static IP address, that was working well with my older (ADSL)router (supplied by my ISP, MTNL). Yesterday I replaced my router with a D-Link DSL-2750U. I could configure it so that my PCs got connected to the Internet over LAN and Wi-Fi. But when I connected the raspberry pi (wired RJ45) it does not show up on the network. The router web page also does not list it. (I think only DHCP clients are shown anyway). I also used a windows program called ipscan24, but the pi does not show up there too. It's a headless pi, with no keyboard or display connected Both routers have the same gateway and basic IP address structure (192.168.1.xx). Is there anything I could do at the router end to get the pi to connect, or is re-flashing the SD card the only option? Thanks!

India announces open source policy- Big win for FOSS

The government has announced open source policy which is applicable to all Government organizations under the Central Governments and those State Governments. Key highlights of government’s open source policy include: – All future Requests for Proposals (RFPs) of eGovernance projects shall include a mandatory clause for considering Open Source Software (OSS) as a preferred option in comparison to Closed Source Software (CSS). Suppliers shall provide justification for exclusion of OSS in their response. - Government Organizations shall ensure compliance with this requirement and decide by comparing both OSS and CSS options with respect to capability, strategic control, scalability,security, life time costs and support requirements. – GoI shall establish suitable support mechanism for the available OSS that includes Institutional Mechanism, Partnership with Industry, Academia and OSS Community. ARDUINO as analog to digital converter for signal acquisition module, transmit digital signal via Bluetooth to the computer for further processing by Pravin Shende 4. Controlling of the robotic limb by MATLAB via Bluetooth. Image processing for detecting the human hand and its movement which then control the robotic limb by Pankaj Lengare 5. WAND (Wound Analysis Device) is a low cost portable, non invasive perfusion measurement device which produces blood flow maps by imaging the wound by Indranil Chandra 6. Badminton playing ROBOT Arduino is used to Drive the motor (wheel) of robot and it is also used to control the pnuematic control of bot. Two bots are created to play the game of Badminton in Robocon game by Prashant Upadhyay KULLY 7. Vehicle Data logger cum tracker with help of arduino, gps receiver and GMS shield. With just a miss call any one can track their respective vehicle. It can be also used in public transport tracking (especially bus). Can be also used to track logistics by Swanand Sapre 8. Interfacing the arduino to an android phone via Bluetooth using the hc05 Bluetooth module, thereby enabling a remote robot to be controlled via your phone. Accelerometer from the phone to send real time orientation to the arduino, thereby enabling to control the robot using only phone tilts by Swapneel Datta 9. A bot which moves in any directions using android phone's bluetooth technology.The bot had Arduino DUE mounted on it which along with HC 05 and a motor driver circuit which made it a car which can be controlled by any andriod phone having Sensoduino App installed in it.
