Alsamixer does not show all sliders.

Hi. Continuing with my sound woes with suse 10.1... My alsamixer does not show all controls. it shows only pcm and capture. There is no "main" control. I am not able to play sound at max volume. I think the hidden "main" slider is the reason for that. My sound card as detected by alsaconf is "snd-hda-intel". Any pointers? Regards, NMK.

As far as I remember, Fedora Core 5 managed just fine, but Ubuntu 6.06 had issues. This was solved using a program called 915resolution. It is there in the Ubuntu repositories, so one can use Synaptic to install it. There is a similar program called 855resolution meant for Intel 855 based boards. Is there any specific reason to use Ubuntu? If not then you can try http://www.pendrivelinux.com/, which has HOWTOs with Puppy Linux and Knoppix. For Fedora based systems, there is a tool called Kadischi which generates a customised live CD from a specified repository of RPMs. Kadischi is still in beta stage, but they are planning to make it capable of generating live USB devices and not only CDs. apache with local vhost files

hi, i have a server where numerous domains are served through apache virtual hosts. This is on debian sarge. So I make one file per domain in sites-available and symlink to sites-enabled. This is getting to be a bit of a bore. I would like the users to make their own vhost files and keep them in their home directories and to symlink from there to sites-enabled. This post is sent to three lists (GNU/Linux , FSF-EDU, FSF-FRIENDS) because I wanted to share this experience and also have a small question. I was asked to present a seminar on a topic assigned to me. The seminar topic doesn't have much relevance to this post, but there was something different that I tried. In a way, I have exposed "Free Software, Ubuntu LIVE CD" distro to my classmates and one of my professor. I didn't speak about GNU and Free Software, but I did mention about considering (GNU/Linux) as an alternative to Windows. One mistake I committed, was I being a bit bais to GNU/Linux and pin-pointing _only_ Microsoft to be responsible for proprietary software. The question that I have ask is this. We had a DLP Projector that could not synchronize with the hardware and the display always went out of Range for Ubuntu 6.06. hello all. I am putting this challenge with reference to my portable book reader project. I want a way to customise my basic ubuntu system and run it from a USB flash card that is put in mobiles or in cameras. or may be a pen drive? the system will be as follows. 1> a kernel having only those modules required to boot from a USB disk and having sound, display, and other necessary things. the kernel wont have network drivers or even ide drivers. no cd rom drivers. 2. I want to make such an OS on the computer and then port it to usb. 3. I know I wont be able to boot this small system from my hard disk after saying that I will exclude ide drivers. I want a way in which I can create a chroot jail in my existing ubuntu box and try things around a bit. then some how may be format the USB disk with ext2 and then put it on there. or may be make an iso image like what slax does and put it on the pen drive with the help of unionfs. any ideas? Get a file through FTP

Hi, i have some problem in FTPing a file, googling could not help around. I have a shell script wriiten on my linux machine(Server A) that get's a csv file from another server(Server B). Every minute , a csv file is updated on Server B and every 30 secs the Server A gets the file from B. hello every one. relax and just chil out with the following real joke that took place with me on 15th. at a school where I was advocating gnu/linux over m$ with one of the "naukars of MR bil dada". I was at a function for my falisitation from my own school in dadar. the guest of honour was some one from microsoft since they donated 100 computers with windows of captivity to the school. as usual I was explaining the authorities at my school why they should not teach windows to young students and do bad sanskars on them. actually one of the dignitories MR. Nitin Shah was also an associate of redhat linux. so I had one person to speek for me as well. the ms guy started to show me down by saying you un organised geeks don't even know what Information Technology means to people. and u can only develop academic toys for college students who want to know what is an OS like. your system can't offer any thing except a toy box. I told him "sir, there was a hindi film called divar just few years back, I just transfered one of its famous dylogs into IT" MR. Bil Gaits: "mere pas word hain, excel hain, access hain, power point hain, SQL server hain, tumhre pas kya hain bolo kya hain tumhare pas!" I say "mere pas freedom hain". this just came out sponteneously and out of the box. the entire staff was in throws of laughter. and it was then that they asked me what did I say that even some one from MS can't answer. the rest is not history but will be future. enjoy. hello, I have a requirement of pressed cds of debian or ubuntu server. actually I tried searching the shipit web site for ubuntu server cd but they don't ship server cd. is there a way to contact ubuntu and ask for server cd with printed cover? actually I have a project on my hands where I am going to implement an erp system. the customer even after reading the gpl is not convinced that the cd I am giving will hold the same value. the old man believes that as a director he can't take a risk on this. just like the ubuntu desktop cd I gave him, he feel that if the cd for server also has a similar make and the same printed cover, it will be licensed. now I am not finding ubuntu server cds like this. so may be I will choose debian cd set. by the way I want to try out debian installation. may be jtd will help me out with instructions for tellingthe installer to install 2.6 kernel and using priority as medium so that I get to choose which components I can install. (passport#, DL#, voter id# (for 18+), PAN# (for the few tax payers)).. why not have some biometric ID to make it really foolproof.. u can confidently say that ram ral, s/o shyam lal, living in pin code 100 020 (and with the given biometric ID details) has id 100 and has no criminal records or bad credit history.. so it is safe to lend money to him.. whereas ram lal s/o manmohan singh has defaulted on that previous loan paid to him.. in fact his current address is tihar jail.. but, then you can only design a technical framework to hold this data, and access/amend it. implementation details such as who enters and keeps on updating data would depend on sarkari babus sitting in the villages who are normally happier to exploit and harass the citizens than in serving them.

How do you propose to implement identity verification for any such facility requiring "authorized access"? Why dont you suggest an alternative system that we can compare against? Remember, such systems are already in place in many countries. The society in these countries is doing just fine. It helps prevent identity theft, money laundering, tracks credit frauds, promotes easy financing, easy access to a lot of government services.. etc etc etc.

C) what NEEDS TO be made available, perhaps some of it to specific agencies only, and not the public directly (loan defaults... criminal records? although one can argue that it can unnecessarily prejudice people against a "reformed" criminal ?) (if marital status/age are chosen to be "public" details)

Maximum volume on OpenSuse 10.1

Hi. Following the suggestions given by list members, I installed OpenSuse 10.1 on my HP Compaq v5000 laptop. Everything is detected nicely. Just one major problem. I am not able to get maximum volume whem I play music. All sliders on alsamixer and the speaker volume applet on the desktop next to the clock are set to maximum, but the the sound plays at say 50% of the max. Any suggestions? Its a built in Intel soundcard with Altec Lansing speakers. Regards, NMK.

Hello All, I got Mandriva 2006 and while everything is fine, since many days I notice that whenever I use thunderbird, it shows a lot of HDD activity and opening new messages and moving to the next ones is too slow, as the HDD shows busy activity. The /log/messages show the following report below as the activity takes place. I even downgraded from Thunderbird 1.5 to 1.0.6 but still same problem. Browsing is no problem. I even uninstalled clamv in case it was scanning mail but still same problem. Has my system got a linix based spyware? ( Calm down guys! ) What is the net activity below? I have set the mailbox to manual mail download only. Below is the log. Is this anything to do with the reiserfs? Hi All, This is a proposal based on the idea 1st proposed by Rony and discussed on the list. This is very important and useful idea and we must develop this idea further by the FOSS process of collective wisdom. Here is the out-line. I will put more info over a period of time. Citizen Information System (CIS): A FOSS Model Today India faces a serious challenge of identifying her citizens and her citizens have to struggle to establish their positive identities. Due to the lack of unique and verified/verifiable citizen identity the State has to face the challenges of internal and external security, leakage in revenues and wasteful expenditures, improper and/or inappropriate planing for the welfare of her citizens. At the same time, due to the lack of unique, verifiable an positive identity citizens have to cope with acquiring and managing and establishing his or her identity which leads to waste of valuable resources and seriously hampers his/her rights to enjoy the state welfare schemes and plans and impair him/her in carry out his/her duties. An unique and verifiable identity can help the country in - Securing her citizens for internal and external threats - Secure proper revenue collections and control expenditures - Can make the citizen welfare plans more effective - Can improve the law and order in the country - Can empower her citizens to enjoy their democratic rights and help Carry out their duties. An unique and verifiable identity can help the citizens in - Enjoying their constitutional and democratic rights - Empower them to fulfill their duties - Help them fully enjoy the ownership of movable and immovable properties - Reduction / elimination of harassment by various authorities - Improved state provided security - Better rewards from the country's citizen welfare plans Considering the tremendous advantages of the Citizen Identification/Information System (CIS), I would like to propose a FOSS model for developing and implementing such a system. hello, with a lot of accessibility related talk going out on this list, I just discovered that some thing is yet to be done. there is a big hole in the accessibility of gnu/linux desktop. while the gnome desktop is getting more and more accessible slowly, there is nothing but an un organised start made on the k desktop side. there is a speach front end for the k desktop it is called ktts. the link was given to me by roni it is http://accessibility.kde.org/developer/kttsd/index.php if any one want to have a look. so we will not be re inventing the wheal but use the wheal to build up a car. + we have the engine of the car also. I am refering to festival speach synthesizer. the mattter of fact is that it will be easiest to convert blind computer users to k desktop and thus linux, if we can provide a good screen reader. there are applications on the k desktop which make transition from windows to gnu/linux much easy as compared to gnome. and then the programmers or any one interested can be gathered together for this kind of an organisation. and the finansial aspect is that we can earn by providing this service to blind people. they can and will happily give out a few thousand rs for this service as compared to rs. 80000 + for some screen reader on windows. thanks all waiting for feedback. hello all, just a few minutes back I tried to compile a kernel by using make menuconfig. it is giving so many errors that I can't even post on this list. what could be the problem? am I missing some packages on my ubuntu 6.06 server? I have the build-esssential package installed which probably has installed glib libc 6 etc along with gcc 4 and make. now I want to knwo what else is remaining? it appears to me that even ncursis is also installed although I am not quite sure of the same. I have linux2.6.16.18 kernel source which I downloaded from kernel.org since I needed a vanila kernel. any suggestions? Krishnakant.

video recording on ubuntu

Aim: To be able to record video on Ubuntu. Apparatus: a) China make Wireless camera and receiver. b) Receiver A/V can directly be plugged into a VCR (or any recording device). c) However, I would like to record on the PC. Currently running Ubuntu Dapper Drake. d) Have an external TV tuner Card. The receiver can be plugged in here. Procedure? I didnt see any relevant software in ubuntu that will allow me to do this. Hi, I am currently undergoing training for my company in Coimbatore. We have many courses to complete in the two month period, one of them labeled as "Linux". That course happened yesterday. It was something really new for me as I got to know some very new things about GNU/Linux Systems: => Stallman and Linus came together to make Linux => Linus was developing on Minix and then he had an idea to create Linux, which he shared with others on a mailing list and all of them started working on Linux together (rather than him announcing the first prototype on usenet). => The default Linux installation is as a server attached to dumb terminals. => The shell, etc for Linux was created after the kernel. => The default is only console. If you want GUI with Unix, you need to *buy* X-Windows. => symlinks are exactly like windows shortcuts and much more. My point is not to make fun of the professor as I believe many do not really even make an attempt to understand the history of anything, leave alone GNU/Linux. That said, trainers and teachers should be fairly accurate in all that they give to their audience. All I said above doesn't simply apply to the trainer I experienced yesterday. Everyone using GNU/Linux in the mainstream only know that they're using "Linux" and that it's simply another Unix that can be only used in servers. It actually reminds me of a comment by a very senior person in my firm -- "Linux? Why? Doesn't it require, like, expensive hardware or something?" Is it possible for FSF to take some initiative in starting a Training Certification program which will ensure that the trainers themselves are well trained? FSF would be the best choice to design such a course as it would more or less ensure that the trainer training is not Distro-centric. I understand deficiency of funds would be the first problem though. Dear Iluggers, PC configuration : P4 3.06GHz with 915 intel original motherboard of 102GCc type with 512MB RAM and 80GB SATA hard disk I'm trying to install Red Hat Linux 9.0 when Im inserting the bootable linux cd i get this warning..... "no hard drives have been found.You probably need to manually choose device drivers for the installation to succeed.Would u like to select drivers now? YES NO if YES then it goes into asking for the driver if NO then it goes on with linux installation aftr selection of mouse it asks for manually or automatic partition to which i select manually with disk druid to which i get the warning as "An error has occured-----no valid devices were found on which to create new file systems.Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem..."
