For the average joe,
Speed - Programs on Linux seem to run faster than their Windows counterparts.
Stability - Your computer won't "crash" on you just when you're almost done typing that important document. [Win2k is stable.]
Variety - You can choose from several of the Linux's, Linux-based web browsers, email clients, word processors, etc. On Windows, you don't have as much choice, hence you're stuck with IE, OE, Word, etc.
Community - Linux has a small but friendly user community that will be ready to help you out with your needs. Can't say that about Windows.
Price - Linux is almost free-of-cost. It's better than your usual pirated copy of Windows.
Also, you can show aj a demo of KDE 2 or Ximian GNOME. That should be enough to lure anyone, my guess.
DON'T tell aj about the command line, pipes, fifos, POSIX compliance, the UNIX philosophy, mail/news/web servers, etc. You'll scare him away.
