After reading the above, I would like to know what _your_ understanding of SEO is. The above is what SEO-ers do!

because sensible people do the above and so do not need to discuss SEO
Just like many confuse between hackers and the (unethical) crackers as hackers, you are brushing all SEO-ers with the same unethical hue! It isn't so. SEO exists as a well-defined discipline because the stuff you point above as common sense stuff isn't common sense for many.
Link-buying, spam-links - that's not what SEO is all about! :)
