If you are talking about SEO, many of us may find the idea odious, as the free software gnu/linux movement depends on ethics.
Why do you consider SEO as a violation of ethics ? Anyone who has a website is putting it up not because he likes html coding, but because he (or she) wants others to see it.....the more the better. SEO is a process where the website is optimised and brought to the attention of search engines, without which the chance of anyone finding out about the website is slim.
Please tell why you feel Linux users should not use SEO techniques.
welcome back to the list - we were talking about you the other day and wondering where you were!
Quiet busy handling the information overload. Also on most of the topics, I do not have any value to add or the topic is too old by the time I see it. So, mostly I am lurking and reading what the gurus say.
Please dont reply directly to digests - put a meaningful subject line.
Actually, that was the subject on the previous mail I replied to. Will be more careful now.
I dont know if SEO is unethical, but since it belongs to the same category as snake-oil sales, crystal gazing, fortune telling and currency doubling, I wouldnt think sensible people would want to discuss it.
Most of SEO is not some mystic / unstable science. There are some very relevant things, some even basic stuff that people dont follow - eg. putting proper meta tags on web pages. I am not an SEO expert, so cant give an insight into it as such.
But if there is a software that will analyse a page and tell what problems are on it that will prevent the search engine from putting it in relevant search or from putting it on the top, then such a software will be useful to all who develop (or commission someone to develop) a website. If there is an open source software that does it, than it is better for that. Why would sensible people not discuss it.
Or have i misread the original query its self.
