I went to www.openoffice.org and clicked the download link but did not find any thing except the snapshot builds.
You didn't find this, I guess: http://download.openoffice.org/common/instructions.html#other_linux
You could use your distro package manager to install too, if they have updated their release to the latest openoffice.
