Hi,
My thoughts below:

members should go through Linux kernel code to understand the kernel internals,
This is what you will be doing most of the time when doing device driver/kernel development in the Free/Libre/Open Source community.
If you have to be current in what is happening, you will have to interact with developers in the mailing lists and on IRC - not in classrooms.
Developers are from different parts of the world, so these are the most important means of communication/learning.
Nobody is going to teach you about recent patches updated to the kernel source tree. It is up to you to use the source and learn. Yes, it is challenging and not everybody's bread.
There is also documentation in the Linux kernel sources, Documentation/ directory.
And that is inevitable when the experts leave the organisation for more lucrative jobs! :)
You are still in a cathedral organizational work environment. You need to come out of that.
You can still contact developers for help/guidance on IRC and mailing lists. That is why I emphasize that you must first participate in the community, get to know how they work and learn.
Regards,
SK
