Check to see if parallel port support and parallel port printer support is compiled into your kernel. Looks like it's missing - the same thing happened to me some time back.

I have recently re-installed Red Hat 7.1 on my machine. Everything works fine, except for printing. A HP LaserJet 4550 Colour printer is connect to my machine, via parallel port. I also use a remote laser printer (HP Laserjet 4050) for printing. However, after configuring the printers in the printtool, I get the following error message, after saving the printing configuration and restarting lpd, selecting a Test page for printing:
