Just to add to what Nagarjuna states. As far as the open source movement is concerned, it is okay to use some amounts of closed source software. It is also okay to distribute open source software that the user is not allowed to modify.
Take Imici for example. It comes with the source code, but the user is not allowed to read, modify or redistribute modified versions. The source is provided only so that you can compile it on unsupported systems.
That is not something we want to promote, and that is one of the reasons I don't use Imici, even though it is more stable than any of the GPLed messengers. (The other reason is that it has a crappy interface).
