Folks, (Yeah, I know I should have used a more "meaningful subject" '-)
My 2 HDD's have got some strange ailment (power surge?) and are in their death throes. Soon I may be left up the room without the paddle... err the PC. What I want to know is, is it possible to have a bootable CD with linux which I can use when them spinners die on me. I have already begged and borrowed these two from my friends, I have no hope for other. All I need is a minimal system which runs CMUCL + Emacs (+ ilisp). If I can have X running with a browser it will be truly wonderful. But how does one deal with all the files which get written automatically? the error records, the /var files, etc? RAMDisk? Can any (good Samaritan) with a CD-Writer, do me a huge favour and create this CD for me? And if the good Samaritan with the CD-Writer does not know how to do it, can other good Samaritans without CD-Writers help him (and me) out?
The other option would be a bootable floppy. What OS would it be? and how much stuff of the above be accommodated on it?

Prakash Shetty has been working on just such a CD ... he had mentioned it quite some time ago, even I would be interested to try it out - the doubt that I have, is how does the CD handle diverse multimedia hardware?

QNX?

The entire QNX demo is on a floppy, and yes, it contains GUI, file manager and web browser, with auto network detection. Didn't detect my network though. eepro100

Errr ... did I confuse some name here? I thought he is a member of this mailing list??

Never used it, but I think it is supposed to have a GUI, a mail client and a browser on a single floppy ...

DemoLinux. Some people on the lug may have it. Full with X and everything. You'll have to pass kernel parameters on the command line to recognise more than 64MB RAM.

Is it possible to have a customised copy of DemoLinux? I have to have a few software in it. Are you sure it does not use the HDD for writing some temp stuff. Is it possible that it uses the FAT or FAT32 for the temp files? I want one to run on diskless (my poor PC so degraded.. :( ) machines.
