Hello,
Our current domain name ``ilug-bom.org.in'' expires on <28-Feb-2006>, and will not be renued this time around, due to administrative problems with registration of .IN domain names.
A new domain called ``glug-bom.org'' has been registered, and will point to the same services with effect from this sunday. However, till the ``ilug-bom.org.in'' domain expires, both domains will continue to function.
It is a good idea to update your address books, email filters and bookmarks now, so that the transitiion will be smooth.

Unfortunately, we cannot tell the thousands of sites across the internet to update their links. Many of these links are in email archives, and companies have a no-update policy for these (I've tried getting links updated in the past).
All old data on ilug-bom will be lost.

What administrative problem?
there seems to be a deadwall on the office side. the email you send to get the domain transfer happens smoothly, after that there is a procedure to transfer the domains from ncst to a private party. ncst will do the trasfer only after the person who holds the domain sends a fax with some kind of a key (which they never send me despite reminders). I had several conversations with them. May be I am missing some thread. If any of you know clearly what to do, I could still get the transfer done before Dec 31st, last date for transfers. meanwhile we thought it is safe to have another domain to continue the work.

There really IS such a key. In most cases the registrar is supposed to issue you one as soon as you register or transfer the domain to some other registrar. Most do it while transfering.
I don't see any reason for forfeiting this domain because someone fouled up at NCST!

The Admin section of the WHOIS shows your name Dr Nagarjuna. If you could prove your identity to them over fax/person (Copy of Passport or any Govt Issued ID does), they should still be able to send you the key. Also make sure that you get all email directed to postmaster@mm.ilug-bom.org.in at least till the time the transfer take place successfully.

OK, It is good to have plan B. I really like the new domain, but breaking already existing links on the Web worries me. It will be nice if we could run on this domain itself.

ah

We have got quite a few company names moved from NCST to other registrars recently. There have been few cases where the companies had not received the Transfer key. We have been able to get NCST to resend the Key to them by post. I am sure NCST will resend the key to you. If you want me to assist in this, I will be happy to do so.

I too had a problem with a co.in domain name transfer dec 31st 2004. Domain expired but they had no policy in place to transfer to directi or similar. but they kept supporting it.
Now, in this case, the NCST office is pretty cooperative (atleast that girl was..). they are in the 8th floor of the Air India building. Maybe a personal visit in conjunction with talks with someone at directi or similar may resolve this?
At the very least, we can request those guys at NCST to extend the expiry date till this gets resolved. I know for a fact my co.in domain had expired in all records but it still worked till the new transfer policy took shape.

question = ( to ) ? be : ! be;
mixed emotions from everyone, i guess. But I feel its a great decision. NCST sucks at being professional. Their whois servers dont work at all. You have to use their web based whois. I am a terminal guy and I just hate it. Besides their servers aren't _that_ reliable.
I have one suggestion though. You can transition to the new domain right now but pursue this matter and see to it that the older domain is registered. Then you can setup a forwarder on the older domain and most websites will update their book mark within the year. Those who get left out, well I can say is tough luck.

Our's is one of the oldest glug mailing lists in india, we cannot afford to loose ilug-bom.org.in domain just like that. We are pursuing with ncst to get this issue resolved. Meanwhile those who have done such migration of domains, please get in touch with me and Nagarjuna at the earliset.
We also need to generate funds to pay for the domains for next two years.
Its just a matter of keeping ilug-bom.org.in domain registered with us, rest all settings in Apache and Exim remain unchanged.

there is some hope that we could have the old domain. After sending a third letter, which also informed them that this will be my last attempt, there is a response, a ticket number . I will call them on monday and try to do the needful. I will make all attempts to keep the old domain.
Also thanks for all the offers to contribute. I will update on the total expenses and then we can all share.

I'm also willing to pitch in
Will our email addresses be automatically subscribed to the new database / domain or would have to re-subscribe to the new list?
