Dear Linuxers,
I have created an online petition with an aim to persuade HDFC bank and its associate www.hdfcsec.com to become more receptable to open source software.
At present HDFC's tradiing site- www.hdfcsec.com can only be accessed by Internet Explorer with no support at all extended to Mozilla Firefox or Opera. This forces a lot of open source enthusiasts to keep IE on their PCs or hit cybercafes to access their online trading accounts.
Hopefully this petition with some help from the open source community will result in HDFC becoming more responsive to the needs of the growing open source community in the country.
Please sign the petition on:
http://www.petitiononline.com/freehdfc/petition.html
Also forward this message to other open source enthusiasts so that enough pressure can be built up on HDFC Bank and its associates.
Regards Shiv Kumar

HDFC is well within their rights to support/deny support to whatever platform it wishes. If you have a problem with their service then change banks ( and make a lot of noise while doing so ;-) ).
I doubt if petitions work at all. The best you can do urge like-minded HDFC customers to leave too and make sure the bank knows the reason.

They are not. ALL banks in India function under certain RBI acts which deem banks to be a public service. So they cannot do ANYTHING which prevents an Indian citizen from accessing their services or charge arbitarily for services. Remember the spat about charging for monthly statements and minimum balance for savings accounts.

Agreed. Voting with the wallet is a very potent tool.

Make sure the petition includes the reasons why they should support OPEN STANDARDS.
I sent a link to the online petition to the HDFC guys and got this wishy-washy response in return. Maybe the webmaster at hdfcsec.com (webmaster@hdfcsec.com) needs to be educated on open source software...

ROTFLOL!!!
I never knew my browser depended on my internet service provider ;-)
Hope the above information suffices, kindly revert to us should you need further assistance.
Keep reverting then. Not by email though; phone calls work best, especially with threats to withdraw all your funds (and your friends' even if you don't have any ;-) ).

Does this threat really work? Has anyone on this list succeeded in getting the ostriches to change their software to play with non IE browsers under such a threat?

I've been using ICICI Bank's Infinity NetBanking service on Firefox for quite a while. Never had a problem. But there was this one issue that I noticed last year. In IE6, when you entered the password, pressed the tab key to get the login button and then pressed the space bar to enter, an additional character was appended to the password causing the login to fail. This however was not a problem with Firefox. The problem has been fixed.
Dear All, Recently I tried HDFC netsafe with following results. HDFC netsafe site refused to work with Firefox with following error
"You are using either Netscape or Internet Explorer with version less than 5.0 Please use Internet Explorer with version 5.0 and above"
Then I tried konqueror and changed browser ident to MSIE, I got login screen, logeed in and created a virtual visa card as well and made a purchase also.
HDFC netsafe site worked with this simple workaround, as it does not contain much of javascript. May you be you can try with this workaround.

Thats not the point. Changing ident is not the solution. We need to bring to their notice that there are lots of users who don't use IE. Changing your browsers ident to make it look like IE will only compound their view that everyone uses IE.
Keep your ident to what it is and let it show in their web logs.

Sometime on Jun 10, cobbled together some glyphs to say:
"You are using either Netscape or Internet Explorer with version less than 5.0 Please use Internet Explorer with version 5.0 and above"
Then I tried konqueror and changed browser ident to MSIE, I got login screen, logeed in and created a virtual visa card as well and made a purchase also.
first of all, don't top post.
secondly, don't change your useragent string. this will only fill up their logs with information that everyone is using Internet Explorer. Why would they have a reason to change then?
