Hi,
Should we allow the folks who deliver movies and music to have the key to our devices and let them decide what we should be doing with the devices which we own?
So whats all the fuzz is about? This campaign is to educate the public about the effects of DRM and how they will be affected.

Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) is a technology that affects all users of computers, media players, mobile phones and other devices.
"'Your devices don't trust you!' is the basic message of DRM. In fact they trust you so little that they will not even tell you that they put you under surveillance," says Joachim Jakobs, FSFE's media coordinator. [1]
"If consumers even know there's a DRM, what it is, and how it works, we've already failed," says Peter Lee, an executive at Disney. [2]
"DRM technologies are based on the principle that a third party has more influence over your devices than you, and that their interests will override yours when they come in conflict. That is even true where your interest is perfectly legitimate and legal, and possibly also for your own data," explains Georg Greve, FSFE's president. [3]

O.K, i'm in. By the way we have some Eliminate DRM stickers, similar to the one here :
http://www.defectivebydesign.org/blog/656
Only they have a yellow foreground. We have 1 roll probaby about 50 or so in it. If anyone wants some(they are available gratis) please send me a mail off the list.

Just add your name there (in the wiki) and stay tuned to the page for
updates. I have been translating some articles to malayalam about DRM stuff in Vista. It would be good if we can make these articles that explains DRM available in as many Indian Languages and in an easy to understand way. Also it is imporatnt to involve the mass media to reach out to more people.
I would suggest everyone who like to understand the issues to listen to the debate on DRM at Holland Open in which Eben Moglen clearly and beautifully expalins why we should oppose current DRM implimentations.
The video is available here http://www.rehash.nl/hollandopen/rawtapes/ho-license_drm/ho-license_drm.mp4
The common misunderstanding everyone has is that they think DRM is about music and movies and why should we, as software developers participate in the debate. As Eben explains, we are not talking about whether movies and music shoould be protected or not. But the way you do it -- to implement restrictions in the layer 7, application layer, they are locking down all the layers till the layer 1 or the physical layer (also called Treasures Computing though the proponents call it Trusted Computing)-- It hambers our rights to create and modify software.
Whatever be the logic to have the layer 7 lock down they are getting a zillion un intended results when they lock down till layer 1 and none of it is their legitimate business (they are not the ones who gets to decide what software I get to use on the computer which I own and I don't want my computer to trust someone other than me).

Some updates:
Translated two articles about Vista DRM to malayalam. Now making transcript of a debate on DRM. Would appreciate any help to complete that. Here is what I have done till now http://fci.wikia.com/wiki/Videos/Transcripts/ho-license_drm.mp4
Some interesting arguments from Eben:
"So the problem with restriction systems is that they require your computer to be under control of somebody other than you. In order to implement it up at layer seven, something that they want to achieve, we could argue what they are trying to achieve at layer seven is a good thing or a bad thing or it should be allowed or it shouldn't be allowed. My problem is that if they are gonna lock you down way back down layer zero inside the kernel inorder to achieve an effect at layer seven, you know what they are going to accomplish, a zillion unintented consequences or at any rate irrelevant consequences.
42:48 If they lock down every layer below the top in order to achieve a result at the top then they achieve a zillion consequences which are none of their legitimate business and which are harmful to our ability to make software.
43:02 It is the fundamental question, you get a computer, you put it on your business network, it doesn't allow you to read it, it doesn't allow you to change it, because if you change it, you are either breaking a criminal law or it is gonna stop working the way it was supposed to work." This points are mostly missed out in debates on DRM, which people think is about music and movies. The objection we have against DRM is that, it interfereres with our ability to make software.
