Why not just use knoppix
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/
What is KNOPPIX®?
KNOPPIX is a complete from CD executable composition of GNU/Linux software with automatic hardware recognition and support for many diagram maps, sound maps, Scsi and USB devices and other periphery. KNOPPIX can be adapted and used as Linux demo, training CD, Rescue system or as platform for commercial software product demos. It does not need to be installed on non removable disks. On that CD upto 2 gigabyte of executable software.can be installed by transparent decompression.

[snip] I appreciate the link cnb, but the whole reason we initiated the project was so that the LUG has itz own version of a gnu-linux BOOT-CD with our own list of s/w we deem necessary from our perspective.
Especially s/w that would be necessary to the student community/ s/w for daily tasks / PIM's, spreadsheets,etc....and a whole lot of stuff that would run on any generic low end x86 box.
Above it all, i also wanted to initiate the STUDENT community and get them aggressively involved with the PRC...which would set the trend for other interested students around the country to come over and take up projects of their choice where in responsible mentors like you would stand by and assist our students via the web on these gpl projects.
So...pls let the pary begin....nd the proj continue....;)
After all....itz better late than never, besides at the endof it all the LUG would hav itz own customised BOOT_CD.

all there already.
it's linux it works on generic low end x86 boxes.

honourable intentions I'm sure, but i don't see the point in reinventing the wheel just customiizing knoppix would be easier.

[snip] customising would b for u or for me.....the students wanna learn & the best way for them to learn woul be to go thro the whole learnin curve.
Patchin some apps here and there.....writin a small script....or just editing a conf file isnt' gonna make them ny more independent than they aldready r with gnu-linux.
This is me personal opinion dude.....& i feel all said nd done itz worth re-inveting the wheel if itz gonna be beneficial to the students concerned.

Hey All
Let me introduce my self first,I'm final yr student of Bharti Vidyapeeth College of Engineering(B.V.C.O.E)-Navi Mumbai.I've been following the mails abt the PRC quite regularly .I talked to my HOD regarding this.He seemed quite enthusiastic about this. Now to my question.
What can i/we(my college) do for the PRC ?
Let me tell you that not a lot of people in my college know about linux .We're just abt to start a linux group in our college. I believe with more awareness a lot many students might be interested.I'd like to have suggestions on the right way to go abt doing this
cheers venky

I guess its actually the other way round. It is the PRC that is supposed to help students. The PRC essentially, is a collaboration tool between students who take up projects based on Linux / Open Source s/w and experienced luggerz, who can act as "mentors". Since the LUG is no way short of experience and skills, this becomes a great system overall. Students get their work done, as well as get introduced to the open source world, while the mentors, well, get some kind of satisfaction.

Its a step in the right direction. I was working with DeepRoot Linux (www.deeproot.co.in) for a while, where, one of our "responsibilities" included giving seminars in colleges abt Linux & Open Source, & the response was fantastic.
May be you could post abt luggerz on the list wanting to do the same in your college, if your college can arrange for it. I am sure there will be many takers.
P.S. Plz don't change the Sub if you are replying to a mail. The threading gets all messed up.

[snip] Therz a lot u can ur college cab do to take the PRC and make it work for all of u'll. I'll outline some of the thingz that can be done asap benefitting u and the PRC.
Let me tell you that not a lot of people in my college know about linux
[snip] Thatz no issue. Better late than never dear pal...;)
.We're just abt to start a linux group in our college. I believe with more awareness a lot many students might be interested.I'd like to have suggestions on the right way to go abt doing this
[snip] This is what we suggest.........start a conversation on the Mailing list abt the projects on Free Software and Gnu-linux in general that would facsinate and encourage the students in ur college to take on projects @ the PRC.
Once thatz done....we will have a solid list which u can then take to ur students @ ur college. The PRC as of now aldready has a few projects listed on it. I think the lack of activity on the PRc is DEPRESSING, cause we alwayz wanted the PRC to be a body of the pple, by the pple for the studentz. And unless therz some initiative by both the STUDENTS and MENTORS themselves, i fail to see how will things start marching ahead.
So, start by asking evry1 else on this ML to get a list of projects that would b good enough for u and other Final year students to work on ..................nd get BOOMIN with the PRC.
All of us nd me too are there whenever u neen any guidance on any projects.

Hey all
I'd like to get people's suggestions on possible projects which can be done through the PRC by students.I'll explain briefly the kind of projects students wld want to look at.
Most of the students have some knowledge of programming(mostly c which is more than useful). We wld be looking at simple projects which serve a purpose(like maybe a simple http server ,or a any sockets based server),preferably which can be used in a college environment. Not looking at too much of a gui based project.
regards venky

--> Wireless 802.11b Network Monitoring --> QOS implementation on gnu-linux using a ncurses based Interface. --> Combining EtherAPE and EtherEAL and provide SIMPLE user oriented Stastical Reporting.
Got tonz of other ideas in mind...take some cues from others too.

How about a CLI instant messenger with an epic-like ncurses interface? It can have it's own protocol or use reverse-engineered yahoo/msn protocols. See archives of this list for more discussion.

The eb-lite messenger comes closest here. It doesn't have a UI. Absolutely no UI at all. Instead it listens on a TCP socket and any UI can connect and talk to it over that. There currently exist a few UIs out there. We just need people to write more.
It's currently only in CVS, so either join through anoncvs, or wait.
Hi gurpreet,
Well ...Trevor ... i guess you had a previous such exp of Boot-CD ;) if i m not mistaken ...
i guess the best link 2 start off are as follows
1) www.linuxfromscratch.org 2) http://freshmeat.net/redir/bblcd/18167/url_homepage/bblcd --> Boot CD Construction Kit quite helpful.
search for boot cd in freshmeat .. u will get some basic idea on how is the exact procedure to start ...
If you need further help ... just mail me ..

Hi gurpreet,
Well ...Trevor ...
[snip] thx mitul, i honestly appreciate the link. To b frank i have a clearly, down-to-earth HOWTO for the whole project.
But i want the students who r working on the project to research, ask around, surf a bit, probe with pesky questions and come up with a solution.
As for starting with the BOOTCD solution, the students can start by.....
--> looking at the various boot_cd_projs out there. -->Find out the best possible way to get the job done....... --> Write a spec sheet/approach path to the soln. --> Approve it by the appropriate mentor & proceed with the scheduled as decided.
I don't c wat is the use of having a PRC if we r goin to provide these students with a HOWTO on how to achieve their objective STEP by STEP.
Dear luggers.... The PRC is meant acc to me......
--> Not to re-invent the wheel, but at the same time foster the community spirit & bring the students under a common umbrella to work together towards a larger objective of benefitting the community and in the process getting the students fundas clear abt gnu-linux.
--> Also meant to get the LUG a whole lot livelier with mentors/students intereactively participating in such community events.
--> Fostering the gnu-gpl spirit and getting the students involved with gnu-linux concepts at an earlystage in life rather than gnu-linux being forced on them later on in commercial situtation in life...
--> nd a lot more...
But luggers...this is sincerely wat i percieve abt how the students should benefit from the efforts the LUG is puttin in.
Brickbats & Bouquets invited.
