This problem was observed in machines having independent cables too. When there is a cd rom and a writer in the system, both have to be in seperate ide channels for faster cd to cd writing. The writer has to be master so sec. master. This leaves primary slave for the cd rom.
I have a Secondary master (cd Writer) and secondary slave as the cd-rom, Though it works fine and doesn't make a complain about it on linux, Windowsxp seems to hang often. Do you think this could be the reason?

The only way to cross check would be to replace with a standard cable and observe xp. If there is no such problem in linux then I presume its some compatibality issue with xp and not a hardware problem. I have replaced cables on 6 to 7 different machines. However all were not xp. I am looking for the cause of this problem to understand it better.

Great !!. If we could sue the great companies for things lying idle, we would be either rich or go bankrupt in no time.
I think he meant "use" but invariably typed "sue". Such typographical mistakes cost millions.
It would have been great if M$oft did this mistake. ' Which is the opeating system 80% of people "sue" .... obviously ......their WINDOZE.'
Returning to his question of using ( I presume) Linux on RS/6000. I think we can !!. But all the Linux flavous currently marketed are mainly for x86 architecture.
You may find Redhat Linux , which used to have RHL for Sparc and PowerPC architecture also.
Better still, If he can compile the kernel to support it.. why not !!
