List has been really old and there are several members who might have subscribed and forgotten or lost interest. We are seeing huge number of unwanted emails
The list is for serious people who want to help and want to be helped ( thats the objective, pls dont debate the current state )
Can we have all list members confirm their membership once again so that people who are not serious and do not reply in X number of days can unsubscribed with due notification / reminder whatever process ? Because here we are not looking for number of members we are looking for quality.
Also for members who willingly / accidentally spam the list with invites should be removed from the list and if they are serious about being around can join back with an explanation instead of going into a loop and eventually fighting
Also it will be appreciated if the list owners will redistribute the list guidelines for the benefit of fellow members and include relevant suggestions from other members.
These are only my suggestion. I encourage list admins to think about them and members to reply simple Vote + 1 / - 1 or list admins to setup a poll.
If you have serious objections to what I have said please complain to list admins and do not discuss on the list.

not allowed. Votes may be:
+1 = for +0 = positively neutral -0 = negatively neutral -1 = against

This is indeed a great suggestion in a long time.
You are right. Everything need occasional cleansing. :-)
So far large number of people have voted in favor of the idea.
Now we need to find a way to clean the list of people who are neither interested nor care any more about the list.
You will hopefully see some action soon from admins/mods.

Why ?? Dear, god why !! Seriously ? Who is going to do this ? Why is everything the list admin's responsibility ? Why put the onus on the admins to filter through and match the +1's here to the 1000 odd addresses that are subscribed here, when one can simply ignore or if it really bothers one, contact the admin on a per case bases ?
I see that the LinkedIn mails have been blocked, let the admin's do the same thing for other automated mails.
Just because of our inability to ignore posts we are not interested in and STFU, we want the admins to do something about it ?
If you have serious objections to what I have said please complain to list admins and do not discuss on the list.
Again, you are soliciting mail for the list admins on their behalf ! Amazing !

You missed the point. All we want is to let members refresh their membership so that people who have left but kept their membership active for no reason can be excluded.

Does it mean all +1 people are volunteering to do the verification?

Isn't there a method to simply send out a confirmation email to the list through the mailer? If not then there should be a patch for it :)

AFAICT, there is an option to confirm when you join, but there is no re-confirm option. Might be a worthy patch, anyone writing it already?

One option could be to unsubscribe everyone, invite everyone again. Those who won't confirm will not be in the list.

yes, as explained before, +1 - for it and willing to do it +0 - for it but not willing to do it -0 - against it, but do not actively oppose it -1 - actively oppose it.

We already have so many volunteered for it, so it won't be a big problem for the admins.

-1. This is like punishing everyone because of the abuse by a few. Also it does not prevent new members who sign up after "the cleanup" to perpetrate the problem below.
Also for members who willingly / accidentally spam the list with invites should be removed from the list and if they are serious about being around can join back with an explanation instead of going into a loop and eventually fighting
+1. In most social sites, there is an option to bypass the feature "invite others from your Yahoo!|Google|Hotmail|Rediff address books" when then they sign up they ought to read the signup page with care.

on condition that they join with a new id - the tainted id should be banned forever - who knows when it would be re-used or sold ...

True, but refreshing subscriptions is not a solution for that anyways. Those who sign up fresh are generally interested enough to at least apologize if someone protests. This is just a way to see how many of those signed up are actually interested and care enough to stay on. IMO it doesn't take much as a member to simply click on a confirmation link.
The real effort, as Praveen mentioned, is for the admins. If there is a "membership re-confirmation" feature in mailman then well and good, but otherwise it's going to either need a patch or for the admins to sweat it out. Could it be possible to:
1) Resend confirmation emails 2) List responding email IDs with the help of a script and get a list which has not responded and call it script_foo 3) Unsubscribe all in script_foo and send an unsubscribed mail
Is this scriptable? I have no idea how mailman works so just speculating. And are the admins willing for it in the first place? If they're no then this is a wasted discussion anyways.

Instead of sending 100's of mails on such threads and not reaching a consensus, why don't the members discuss matters like these during the next LUG meet? That would be more effective in putting an end to such mails and getting this list to function the way it was primarily meant to function.
Regards, NMK.

At LUG meets there are very few people. The majority are not able to come . Maybe once in 6 months all who want to be on the list must send a blank mail to some spl address to confirm not being removed from the list. Or maybe knowing the best practice of weeding out a few thousand zombies from the CHEnnai LUG admin would help as Kenneth pointed out.
My 2 cents K
