Apparently, some people have worked with Maya on Debian and Gentoo before. http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/5235 for more information.
and
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/5235
Maya provides RPM packages for Red Hat based distributions.
My OS of choice for you would be one of Debian or Ubuntu or UbuntuStudio. You can choose any of the abovementioned distributions and figure out for yourself.
For Ubuntu: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-358243.html and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=66859
I can send you copies of any Linux distribution you'd like to use. Just send me an email and I'll arrange for it.
Regards, Yesudeep.

no need to convert. alien -i xyz.rpm will install an rpm package directly on a debian system. WARNING: while this has worked most of the time dependencies do cause problems with the some packages

Debian etch 3 dvds available with me. I am located at Airoli. And while you are at it might as well try blenderer. It's a 3d animation package for linux. You can interact with the developers to get in features that you think are useful as a professional animator.

Thanks folks for all your support and suggestions. For Rony and JTD : guys, i am aware of Blender and what it can do. and i am currently working towards learning that. But i am a professional Animator and i have a registered company with 16 people working with me. and we are all Maya professionals since the last 4 years. We already have Licensed copies of Maya with us which ships with Windows, MAC and Linux versions. So we are now looking for the best platform to run that. We have zeroed in on Open Suse and Mandriva. Can someone tell us how to convert RPM packages run on Ubuntu. because we really liked the distro.

You need .deb packages to install it on Ubuntu.

HEHE: here is something that happened a few days ago with us. A pcb design package (which i have talked about off and on) using a stupid dongle for copy protection and running on doze - the last package which required doze (actually dosemu). The dongle konked out and the company (now with new owners) requires us to upgrade and buy new dongles. Never mind that we can crack the dongle and get rid of it. To cut a long story short i am now forced to do what we put off for long - switching over to geda and pcb. Nothing like a real simultaneous pain in the ass and the pocket to make one do things i suppose.
Non FOSS software ALWAYS bites.

See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=66859 But it's for Maya 7.0, which seems quite old from the date of the thread. But, there are posts from as recent as 2 days ago, in that thread. So, you may find some useful info.

What were the factors that helped the decision of using Maya on Linux? I am curious to know as I have a client who uses licensed Windows and 3D Max and is currently stuck with that platform.

For production, it is advisable to stick to the 'baap' of *buntu, that is Debian. Debian stable is the ideal one. Debian unstable is what goes into *buntu. It is like a beta software. Install both the desktops ( KDE and Gnome) and their developer tools. That way your system has the advantage of both the environments.
Have a look at the link below for installation notes for Linux.

Avoid giving your phone numbers on the list as it is a public forum accessible on the internet.
For your query, have a look at this link.

Please note that Maya is not libre (freedom) software. Blender is a better choice and it is better you make the beginning in 3D directly with libre software and gain experience on it.
