What do Luggers think about the Kernel naming system?

I am sure most Luggerz have read the URL posted below. It refers to the Slashdot story on the naming of Linux Kernel. http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/N339.slashdot.org/B1044957.3;sz=468x60;ord=10… Apparently, there is lack of consensus in the core Kernel developing team as to what the new kernel should be called. While some want to call it 3.0 as they believe that calling it 2.5 would do injustice to all the work put into it, the other believe that it should be called 2.5 as it represents only increase in performance and not changes in any of the sub systems. Linus, as usual, is pretty neutral. I for one believe that calling it 2.5 or 3.0 should not make any difference to people who are already using Linux since some time. However, calling it 3.0 would earn Linux some marketing advantages and improve it in the eyes of the IT honchos wo, at first sight, might believe, its a lot more *stable* and advanced than the 2.4 Kernel. I think it would be interesting to discuss this here and get your views on this? -- Bhargav Bhatt, Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics, Columbia University.

kdevelop makefiles

Hi I have used kdevelop for sometime. But I havent figured our the Makefiles part Even for a small program like "Hello World" It makes a Makefile of some 100 lines. Can someone having expertise on Kdevelop please explain me why does it require so long makefiles and what all things really go inside that makefile. How is it beneficial to my hand edited makefile. I tried figuring it out. But it was way too cryptic. I find it much better to hand edit my own Makefile. regards Abhijeet

You might want to see perldoc -f srand # PERL random seed documentation. srand EXPR srand Sets the random number seed for the "rand" opera- tor. If EXPR is omitted, uses a semi-random value supplied by the kernel (if it supports the /dev/urandom device) or based on the current time and process ID, among other things. In versions of Perl prior to 5.004 the default seed was just the current "time". This isn't a particularly good seed, so many old programs supply their own seed value (often "time ^ $$" or "time ^ ($$ + ($$ << 15))"), but that isn't necessary any more. In fact, it's usually not necessary to call "srand" at all, because if it is not called explicitly, it is called implicitly at the first use of the "rand" operator. However, this was not the case in version of Perl before 5.004, so if your script will run under older Perl versions, it should call "srand". Note that you need something much more random than the default seed for cryptographic purposes. Checksumming the compressed output of one or more rapidly changing operating system status programs is the usual method. For example: srand (time ^ $$ ^ unpack "%L*", `ps axww | gzip`); <snip> etc. You should be able to write similar code in C. Amish. Not so Random

Hi! i've taken this code straight from man rand it is supposed to generate random number between 1 and 10 j=1+(int) (10.0*rand()/(RAND_MAX+1.0)); now when I print j it *always* gives 9 i don't think this is random i guess it has something to do with seed (what is it anywayz ?) when i call srand with different seed value it gives some other integer, but again it *always* gives that integer only.. thx -- Nikhil Joshi
