Other option, I am not sure of how to do, is using md(multiple-disk) devices. Where you can combine two partitions in such a way that they act as single parition. Other option might be to move, /var, /usr partitions to move to new disk and create more space on old_disk and allocate that space to /home, but requires partition rearranging. Please do ask if you do not know how to do it. Btw, even I dont know these are just suggestions ;-). Amish.

[8-< snip] Hi Sailesh, I dont use RNG's for cryptographic applications, i have used them for biomolecular simulations. Use of RNG's in cryptography is a very well established mathematics so i dont think you will have problems getting ur answer.Sorry cant answer ur question :(. Assume that the DNS server is hosted locally, then what ? If the link is down, anyways, it will not be able to query, and hence not be able to resolve the hostnames. Why not ? Sendmail does that. If your mailserver is sendmail, it will accept the mails and then spool them locally, till the link is up. sendmail problem

Hi everyone I have a problem with sendmail. it's working fine. But when the internet link is down, as dns server is not hosted locally. All mails from clients are not accepted by the sendmail server. Mails lies in the outbox of the outlook express. When internet link is up everything is fine again. I want that when internet link is down mails should be accecpted by the sendmail server, and keep it in the queue and send when link is up. Can anyone suggest what i should i do. so the sendmail will accepcts mails at all point. priyadarshi _____________________________________________________________

Overflows

ummm... People, as a separate discussion here is an idea [probably extremely lame]. There should be an allocation ramdomizer. Meaning say, if you require 100 bytes, then the randomizer should malloc memory from say 100-120 bytes at random during runtime. Now you may ask, why O why? Well when the [fixed] memory is allocated on the stack, peeps use it to overflow the buffer & corrupt return address of calling function - "Classic buffer overflow" as some like to call it. But if we have a variable allocated space the same overflowers will not have such an easy calculation - having a choice of 20 spots for the return address [in this eg]. Ofcourse it would be better to just check for input overshooting the buffers. But it was an idea anyway...! '-) quasi

Buggy C prog

Hi! I've tried this simple prog to encrypt a file using XOR But it gives "Segmentation Fault " in 'interactive' mode (pls see the source code) it runs perfectly well in DOS (using Turbo C++ 3.0) Can ny1 help pls ? -- Nikhil Joshi

Auto-logout problem

In RH 7.3, which I use on my computer, I get logs out automatically sometimes. I mean I get the login screen after few hours of inactivity. I use KDE. Does anyone know how this ((automatically logging out) could be stopped? Nikhil, the term RNG is actually a misnormer the numbers that a RNG generates are actually pseudo random numbers, meaning they are reproducible and the generating function is known(hence they can be reproduced). Most of the RNG's we know of are LCG's(Linear Congruential Generators) They work on a simple recurrence relation r(i+1) = (A * r(i) ) MOD m MOD is the modulus operator. In ur case Considering that r(i), A and m are constant r(i+1) will also be the same each time u execute the program. A clever workaround will be calling srand() with the seed as the current system time. The ideal generators are those that have a period equal to 'm'. The period is the longest possible non-overlapping sequence of numbers generated by a LCG. the greater the period the more desirable is the generator(but the sequence of numbers generated is also important). The 'seed' is nothing but r(0) ie the first r on the RHS of the recurrence relation. The C library RNG is not that good in the sense that it has failed many theoretical and empirical tests. there are a lot of RNG'S that are much better than this generator and have whopping periods.They also provide the user with the ability to generate disjoint substreams of numbers using the same generator. Random number generation is a tricky process and needs a lot of mathematical intuition. And finally if you are looking for truly random numbers try weather data from internet weather stations.These are truly random.
