I am a IT businessman since 1997, after my graduation, I am heading a software and IT services company in Singapore. I do several freelance,
projects on emerging technologies. I assit, budding business, IT, and now Linux professionals to start business in Singapore and California.
I have a strong presence in these two cities for nearly 8 years. I represent several IT and Business consulting firms as Senior Consultant

I had installed Knoppix 3.2 on my machine. After doing apt-get update,
some 60 - 70 mb worth of .debs had been downloaded and then installed on
my machine.
Now, the hdd has developed bad sectors. As the hdd is still within the
warranty period, I have to return it to the vendor for testing which
will destroy all my data on the hdd.
the .debs have been saved on the hdd somewhere in /var/... (I don't
remember the exact location -- I am not at that machine).
my question is:
If I back up these .deb files, will I be able to reuse them after I
reinstall knoppix ? if so, how ?
What other files do I need to backup ?
What is the best way to get a working debian install on my machine with
all the latest goodies like in knoppix ? (I mean the latest kde for eg,
which in woody, even after upgrading via the net gives me kde 2.1.2
which is ancient :( )
I read somewhere that this is best done by installing just a base system
from woody and then upgrading the base system to testing or unstable. I
can't find this reference now so, any pointers are welcome.
I am a newbie to debian.

Hi all,
I have been trying to compile gnome-bluetooth on an Suse8.2 machine.
./configure works but make fails giving the following error
/usr/local/lib/libc.a: could not read symbols: No more archived files
cant figure this one out at all..
what could be wrong??

I have a CD of ELX Bizdesk Linux 2.0 which was given with the LFY magazine.
It is fairly easy to install and good graphics too. But I have not used it for long.
Is it easy to use like Red Hat ? Can we install new softwares in it from rpms or source ?
I would like to know if anyone has tried this distro.

I have a system which prints to .prn file.
Is there any utility in Linux which can read the contents of
the .prn file and output it to a human readable .txt format.
ANy pointers or suggestions are deeply appreciated.

I login as root and do all my work. But there are times when I need to login
as a user abhijeet and do my work especially when I have to commit my code to
cvs. I do that using

This starts konqueror and then I use the cervisia plugin in konqueror and
commit my work in CVS using the user abhijeet.
This was working well untill yesterday when it started giving foll errors and
konqueror (and other apps) refused to launch.
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
konqueror: cannot connect to X server :0.0
At the server end (The console form where I run startx) also it gives errors.
X: client 16 rejected from local host.
I suspected it to be a problem with the /root/.Xauthority so I replaced the
file with a blank file.
Now although it gives new errors,
Session management error: Could not open network socket
QSettings: failed to open file '/usr/lib/qt-3.1/etc/settings/qt_plugins_3.1rc'
knoqueror launches. But I need to replace .Xauthority with a new file every
time reboot.
If anyone knows the soluton or can throw some light on the problem please let
me know.
