i find it HIGHLY OFFENSIVE that you are encouraging the use of a .doc file
format in a GNU/Linux mailing list. Even if your mail is tagged as
commercial.

Did any of the candidates bother asking why? Even one?

If we sit and ``Live with it" nothing will ever change. If we want a better
society, we HAVE to make it very clear what is NOT the way to go. Call me a
naive idealist if you want, but if i see something that i don't agree with
i'll make it a point to say it.
It may be a ``fact of life" now, but if we don't do anything to change it,
it will remain so. Not opposing something that is evil is not the same as
supporting evil, but it indirectly contributes to evil persisting.
Take a simple case,
You have company and advertize for jobs, you INSIST on ODT or any open
standard for accepting resumes. Then come what may people(including
placement agencies) WILL use that format to send a resume to you. Who know's
in the process they ``might" just have a moment of clarity in which they'll
realize that there's more that just what's followed.
And that is the 1st step.

Just to inform you that in the US and possibly other countries, all DVD
writers/roms sold require to have this lock. It is mandated by the
RIAA/MPAA and by extension US law so that you cannot freely change
regions to play DVDs released in other regions. The fact that you can
change it 5 times is a privilege extracted from these agencies by the
manufacturers of the devices.
That Sony has it is not unique and it just says that they are selling
the international model here in India. If other brands don't have this
lock then they are probably chinese/taiwanese players who may not be
fully complying with the law (if it applies in India).

If I download this to my HDD, and install it to
replace my current RH9, which has some irritating
issues with memory handling (aside from issues
recognising peripheral hardware, plus the CDROM drive
is kaput), will I lose my RH9 user settings?
If this is a completely trivial question, please do
mail me back offlist, anyone who can guide me ensure
that neither settings nor stuff like mailboxes get
lost (this is the computer my wife uses, and my life
will be at stake).
Many thanks
Vickram

Is it a hardware level lock? This REALLY stinks. i had faced a similar
problem with an Apple iBook G3 but fortunately the lock was only at the
software level. Using another ``software" sorted it out ;-)
i had heard about a hardware level hack for DVD players, i.e your standard
DVD player is set to a default region(normally the one in which the DVD was
manufactured), apparently the guys to supplied the player told us about this
AND about the hack(which was essentially doing some soldering on the DVD
logic board), and boom i had a region free DVD player. i don't know if we
will be so lucky with Blue Ray DVD's, but luckly the alternative HD DVD is a
little less restrictive.
