hi, is there a way i can use a device blocked by one program, if required by another prog.? the situation is like this, i am running skype on linux and at the same time i want to play xmms for some songs, (i can do it in windows, skype and winamp together so i hear the person as well as some music in backgrond.) to my knowledge i dont think its possible in linux, but just wanting to wish the i am wrong ;-)

Citizen Information System (CIS): A FOSS Model

Hi All, This is a proposal based on the idea 1st proposed by Rony and discussed on the list. This is very important and useful idea and we must develop this idea further by the FOSS process of collective wisdom. Here is the out-line. I will put more info over a period of time. Citizen Information System (CIS): A FOSS Model Today India faces a serious challenge of identifying her citizens and her citizens have to struggle to establish their positive identities. Due to the lack of unique and verified/verifiable citizen identity the State has to face the challenges of internal and external security, leakage in revenues and wasteful expenditures, improper and/or inappropriate planing for the welfare of her citizens. At the same time, due to the lack of unique, verifiable an positive identity citizens have to cope with acquiring and managing and establishing his or her identity which leads to waste of valuable resources and seriously hampers his/her rights to enjoy the state welfare schemes and plans and impair him/her in carry out his/her duties. An unique and verifiable identity can help the country in - Securing her citizens for internal and external threats - Secure proper revenue collections and control expenditures - Can make the citizen welfare plans more effective - Can improve the law and order in the country - Can empower her citizens to enjoy their democratic rights and help Carry out their duties. An unique and verifiable identity can help the citizens in - Enjoying their constitutional and democratic rights - Empower them to fulfill their duties - Help them fully enjoy the ownership of movable and immovable properties - Reduction / elimination of harassment by various authorities - Improved state provided security - Better rewards from the country's citizen welfare plans Considering the tremendous advantages of the Citizen Identification/Information System (CIS), I would like to propose a FOSS model for developing and implementing such a system. In this paper I will propose and develop this idea in the FOSS spirit where people for all walks of life can participate in - Formulating such an Open System - Discussing social, economical and legal aspect of the CIS - Discussing implementation and management aspects of the CIS - Discussing technological details of the CIS Your feedback as usual is most welcome. What type of assistance are you looking at? To begin any project, a lot of details regarding the technical and management aspects have to be resolved. Why Free Software won't work in the mainstream

Hi, There's an article in The Times of India (page 23, "No Free lunches for me") by Charles Assisi, who describes himself as "A socialist turned capitalist". He makes an argument about why Free Software will not work in the mainstream market. His argument is that if he writes something and gives it away to a community, the community is free to improve it and distribute it. But at the same time, he stands to lose his livelihood as he becomes a disposable commodity in the face of the hundreds in the community. He also cites an example made by RMS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Stallman , just in case ;) ), wherein he had stated that if one doesn't buy a car when he can't open its hood, the same should apply for software too. If one buys software but is not allowed to modify it, improve it then it's simply not enough. Charles says that while that is true in principle, the comparison cannot be made between the two very different industries. The difference here is that while car mechanics may tinker around with cars to repair/enhance them, they simply cannot build one themselves. The same is not true for software as a collective can modify the software beyond recognition. Also, it doesn't increase cost to replicate the software as it does in case of cars, hence in the car industry there is no case for "stealing livelihood" if one could call it that. Loss of memory on just installation of RedHat 9 / Fedora Core 3

Hi, What I am trying to tell you , is that if you just perform a plain installation of Fedora Core 3 OR RedHat 9 without configuring any services Then monitor the memory usage , you will find that your memory is just utilized without starting any services . This is bad because if you want to insatll this as a server for Oracle / Weblogic / Mail / Postgresql Or any services the application cannot be used for production. Hi List, Can nebody tell me whether Intel D 101 GGC motherboard works fine with FC3.Ive one new m/c with configuration as following, Intel 3.0 Ghz Processor Ram 1 Gb Intel D 101 GGC Motherboard. Embedded Linux Project Idea.

Hello All, This is an idea for those who are into embedded linux systems. The concept is to create wireless internet access in taxis, cars and buses. The options available today are the wireless data cards or mobile phones or FWP phones attached to individual laptops. But what happens when more passengers want to access the net and everyone may not have a data card. So we need a black box that acts as an interface with the phone's ( net service provided by the transporter) usb cable and the network interface of a Wireless AP. I don't know if any ready made phone is available with a direct network interface and a built-in ppp dialer but the simple way out would be to use an old pc or laptop as the interface and share that connection at its ethernet port. However that would make it too bulky and power consuming. The other approach would be to have something like the ADSL modem that is a network interface and a pppoe dialer bundled together. In our black box we need a usb interface that can detect different wireless phones, a pppoe dialer to make a connection and a network interface to connect to the W AP. Everytime the connection breaks, it will automatically redial. The cost of a dialup session for RIL internet is 50p/minute so Rs. 30 for an hour. That amount can be divided among the passengers and they benefit by being online without a data card. Local buses and taxis can use FWP phones and long distance luxury buses, taxis will use mobile phones as the network device. For buses, more phones and devices with W APs can be added as per demand, for better bandwidth. Everyday, the gaps between no signal areas is closing in and we will get almost seamless net access across the travel region. Regards, Rony.
